In brief: In the aftermath of Cambridge Analitica, Facebook has worked overtime to re-legitimize itself. Aside from the various PR actions the company has taken over the last several months, it has also taken legal action against companies selling fake engagement. It appears that yesterday it received its first small victory in one of those lawsuits.

The Verge reports that in April of this year, Instagram owner Facebook filed a lawsuit against New Zealand company Social Media Series Limited (SMSL). The suit alleges that the firm sold automated engagement bots to Instagram influencers. The suit asked for undisclosed “damages for manipulating the Instagram platform.”
In a legal brief filed on Wednesday, Facebook and SMSL asked the court to halt proceedings as the two companies settled the matter.

The SMSL lawsuit is not the only legal action the social media has brought to the courts. The Verge noted that in March of this year, the company filed similar suits against four Chinese companies that were also allegedly selling fake Facebook and Instagram accounts. Those cases are still pending.

Facebook’s privacy problems remain constant, even after receiving the largest fine in the history of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for “decisions made about its users’ privacy.”
Do you really want to be this “authentic” with strangers?
Facebook’s announcement of the official launch of the service noted, “This format lets you be authentic in a way that a typical dating profile can’t, and it helps you get to know someone before and after you match.”
This authenticity may help you make a connection, but it could also be an operational security (OPSEC) nightmare.
Dating scams are huge
The Better Business Bureau responded to the launch of Facebook Dating by noting that “85% of catfishing scams start on Facebook.” Catfishing is the term used to describe using a fictional online persona to scam someone, often to defraud the target of money.
With more than 2.3 billion users, Facebook couldn’t verify the identities and intentions of all of its users, even if it tried. And no dating app can be expected to remove all the risks of dating.

Last week, photographer Sophie Harris-Taylor opened an exhibition in London titled “Epidermis.” The show features models with different skin conditions, like rosacea and acne, on full display. Gillies modeled for one of Harris-Taylor’s photos.

“I want people to go to the exhibition and for people to see the work,” Gillies said. “Because it’s not very often that you get artists wanting to focus on something like skin conditions, people talking about rosacea.”
But no matter what she did, Instagram wouldn’t approve her promotion. After first submitting it, she was greeted with a pop-up notification in the app that said, “This ad isn’t running because it uses images that excessively focus on a person’s body or body part, or depict unlikely before-and-after results.”

She appealed the decision, and in a handful of follow-up emails, Gillies finally received another response. This time Facebook, which owns Instagram, expanded on the ad policy that led to her inability to promote her post.

“We don’t allow ads that focus on aspects of a person’s body to highlight an undesirable or idealized body state,” Facebook’s policy reads.
This list also included close-up images of “a person’s skin with the aim of highlighting medical conditions” like “acne, eczema, and dermatitis.”

One of these methods is to quietly tap into a phone's Bluetooth technology to track users' physical location and their proximity to others' smartphones.

Beyond hoarding profile data to use for tailoring advertisements, Facebook could theoretically use the relationship-mapping data in its newly launched dating service competing with Tinder and Bumble.
Ahead of the iOS update, Facebook published a blog post last week explaining its location-gathering practices. The post notes that users can turn off location services to prevent the app from using Bluetooth and GPS to track them.

However, even with location services switched off, Facebook will track users' location "using things like check-ins, events, and information about your internet connection." Business Insider has reached out to Facebook for any additional comment.

The firm insisted the panel, which will hear its first "cases" in 2020, will have power to override decisions it makes over contentious material and influence new policy.
The idea, dubbed the Facebook supreme court, will eventually comprise 40 people around the world, but will be smaller at first.

"The board's decision will be binding, even if I or anyone at Facebook disagrees with it," Mr Zuckerberg said. "The board will use our values to inform its decisions and explain its reasoning openly and in a way that protects people's privacy."
Why is Facebook is doing this?
Facebook's primary concern is that it doesn't want the power it currently wields - or at least, it doesn't want the scrutiny that power attracts. Its ability to decide what goes on its platform, the biggest network of people ever created, brings it nothing but trouble, particularly in its home country.

"This panel is seen as an attempt to do something, but it appears to be just short of having enough teeth to make a difference," argued Mr Hogan. "It is a way to tell critics 'lay off, we are doing all it can'. Such a panel, while admirable is no match for some well organised trolls or broad systemic issues."

The device, whose AI-equipped camera will follow users around the room in order to keep them in the frame during video calls, will be available to British consumers for the first time from October 15.

But Facebook admits up front that clips of the instructions given to Portal's voice assistant might be passed to human contractors to check whether they have been correctly interpreted by its speech recognition software – unless users explicitly opt out.
Andrew Bosworth, Facebook's vice president of augmented and virtual reality, said that Portal would never record the content of anyone's video calls, and that its "smart camera" software remains entirely on the device without any data being sent back to Facebook.
Option to block
Users will be able to block Portal from recording any voice commands or taking any transcript using a tickbox in the device's privacy settings, as well as being able to delete recordings individually.
All Portals will include some form of physical plastic cover which can be placed over the camera and also allow the microphone to be switched off.

Data parameters
Mr Bosworth said that Facebook would collect the same data from people using its apps on Portal as it would from any other device.

The basic version of Portal will cost £169 in the UK, while the larger Portal Plus will cost £269 and the smaller Portal Mini will cost £129.
Portal TV, a version which plugs into TVs using their HDMI sockets and uses their screens as its interface, will cost £149.

That next stage, changing where my son spends precious hangout time with his grandparents 3,000 miles away, will be a hard sell in my house.
It's not because we're uncomfortable with cameras in our home.

The problem is Facebook.
The implicit trust I placed in it when I signed up to use it shortly after its launch in 2004 has been trashed after a string of privacy scandals over the past few years.

Facebook is also making its playable ad format available worldwide. Playable ads are literally that -- advertisements that use games you can play to drive downloads and installations or to accomplish any other brand objective.

Finally, the company's augmented reality ads, which it started testing in mid-2018, is also entering open beta worldwide this fall.
People are used to seeing and interacting with AR elements, so ads that have them may have a better chance of getting noticed than those that don't.

Just nine months after introducing Stories in Facebook Groups, the social media giant is killing off the feature on September 26, at 9AM Pacific Time.

The feature — called group stories and available since December last year — allowed a group’s administrators and members to post ephmeral photos and videos that vanish within 24 hours.

“We’re sunsetting group stories because we want to make sure that features in groups enable people to connect in fun and useful ways, and we’re always looking at ways to improve the overall experience for communities on Facebook,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement to CNET.
It’s not immediately clear how popular group stories was. But judging by the fact that Facebook is shutting it down merely nine months after debut suggests it wasn’t widely used.

The launch of the hidden Like counts test makes available what we reported Facebook was privately prototyping earlier this month, as spotted in its Android code by reverse engineering master Jane Manchun Wong. The test will run in parallel to Instagram’s own hidden Like count test we also scooped that first tested in Canada in April before expanding to six more countries in July.

“We will gather feedback to understand whether this change will improve people’s experiences.” If the test improves people’s sense of well-being without tanking user engagement, it could expand to more countries or even roll out to everyone.

Zuckerberg began his answer with a curious statement: "Well, look, I think humanizing stuff is always really important. So, I've always focused more on the substance and trying to deliver things, and a little bit less on the perception. And I don't think we have that luxury anymore."

Could this be an admission that Zuckerberg has suddenly grasped that human beings are, well, human?

Numerous people are reporting that for the past nine days users are being locked out of Facebook after reporting fake user profiles to the social site.

According to many reports under the Twitter #FacebookLockout hashtag, when people report a fake account to Facebook, about 30 minutes later they find that they have been locked out of their account.
It does not seem to matter what type of account is being reported as they range from reporting deceased family members, celebrity accounts, and politicians.

After being logged out, when they try to log into Facebook again, the site asks them to perform a "Security Check" that asks for an ID. A bug, though, is preventing this verification process from completing, leave the user with no way of getting their accounts unlocked.

Instagram is slowly rolling out a new feature that will help better protect your personal data from being accessed by your long discarded, third-party applications — that is, any app you had once authorized to access your Instagram profile over the years. This may include websites you used for printing your Instagram photos, various dating apps, or Instagram tools for making collages, finding your top photos, and more.

And Instagram isn’t hurrying its launch, either.
The company says its new security features will take a whopping six months to reach all users, as it’s designed to be a gradual rollout. For comparison’s sake, most new features tend to roll out in days or sometimes weeks, but rarely as long as half a year.

As the company explains in a developer announcement, the new API will enable “appropriate consumer use-cases, while protecting user privacy and safety” — including giving users the ability to decide what information they share with apps, then revoke access through the Instagram mobile app. The legacy API platform will be deprecated on March 2, 2020.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will deliver an “unfiltered take” on freedom of speech tomorrow via live Facebook video. “I’ve been writing a speech about my views on voice and free expression that I’m giving tomorrow,” Zuckerberg wrote.

“It’s the most comprehensive take I’ve written about my views, why I believe voice is important, how giving people voice and bringing people together go hand in hand, how me might address the challenges that more voice and the internet introduce, and the major threats to free expression around the world.”
The speech will be delivered tomorrow at 1PM ET, and Zuckerberg calls it “an unfiltered take on how I think about these questions,” based on years of thinking about speech issues. Also, it’s apparently very long.

Zuckerberg has delivered plenty of lengthy philosophical musings about Facebook, but he’s generally published them as blog posts, not delivered them as live speeches. This announcement comes a couple of weeks after he unexpectedly live-streamed an internal Q&A session, following the publication of an earlier session’s audio by The Verge.

Mark Zuckerberg is on a transparency tour. Earlier this month, the Facebook CEO held a livestreamed version of the social media company’s normally closed employee Q&As. And on Thursday, he streamed a live talk at Georgetown University about the company’s decisions not to ban outright false political ads and about free speech in general.

And, perhaps more importantly, what Zuckerberg is saying doesn’t seem to be new or at all revealing. Does it matter if you’re being transparent if you aren’t really saying anything?
What he did talk about were concepts we’re all very familiar with.
Overall, Zuckerberg strung a lot of words together that sounded nice and were inoffensive, but they fell far short of showing that Facebook is willing to make the real hard decisions it would take to make its platform healthy.

Rather, it seems that all of this transparency is instead Facebook taking a defensive position as the good guy with nothing to hide.
Of course, people will be mad no matter what Facebook does. It appears that in reaction, Facebook is choosing not to do much of anything.

$35B face data lawsuit against Facebook will proceed

Facebook just lost a battle in its war to stop a $35 billion class action lawsuit regarding alleged misuse of facial recognition data in Illinois. Today it was denied its request for an en banc hearing before the full slate of ninth circuit judges that could have halted the case. Now the case will go to trial unless the Supreme Court intercedes.

The suit alleges that Illinois citizens didn’t consent to having their uploaded photos scanned with facial recognition and weren’t informed of how long the data would be saved when the mapping started in 2011. Facebook could face $1000 to $5000 in penalties per user for 7 million people, which could sum to a maximum of $35 billion.

The device, which launched a little over a year ago, has been plagued by the privacy concerns of would-be buyers from the start.

“The orders for the components were not high to begin with, and the build volumes were low,” Bajarin says. “They [Facebook] never meant to build up a large inventory.”
Bajarin says the Portal is selling in the “hundreds of thousands” per year range, not in the millions.
A sales rep at a Best Buy store in midtown Manhattan said they’d sold “hardly any” of the Portals at all.

“I do think the heart of the matter is that Facebook has lost people’s trust to the point that Facebook may never evolve beyond what it is as an online place people see stuff from their friends,” Bajarin said. “Basically, a social wall.”
