What I have never understood is that Intel CPU's always use 100% when playing video games, even old ones. I thought that multi-core CPU's would solve this problem, but they didn't.

And there lies the question. Is this a serious threat to Intel or just another flash in the pan?

off-topic: Isn't that called "throttling" bottlenecking? When a CPU is mismatched and underpowered relative to the graphics processor, among other things? Should it be the other way around, maybe? I currently have an i7 6700K and a middle of the road GTX 1080, they are typically neck-and-neck in games (though not always). That's one thing I'm going to enjoy in the future: doing some serious research among the myriad possibilities and then compiling a computer based on a strong CPU/GPU combination. They have to go together like oxen in a harness.

I wish I could get over my anti-AMD bias. There's no solid reason for it. I guess when you've had Intel and nothing but Intel, it's basically a monopoly in your mindset. Or mine, rather.

    Edited to correct something

I honestly don't know, but I have a feeling this must be the case. Something just doesn't feel right, CPU and GPU go beserk when I play even older video games. And I'm afraid my system will become toast, so the plan is to buy a PlayStation or Xbox.

"Nearly half of Japanese desktop CPU market claimed by AMD

It's no secret that AMD has been seeing a pretty substantial surge in popularity over the last couple years since the first generation of Ryzen appeared on the scene. And, as further proof of AMD's popularity, AMD processors now make up nearly half of desktop processor sales in Japan.

This comes via a aggregated report from PC Watch Japan, and it shows that the market share for Team Red's processors has grown substantially over the last year or so – from just 17.7% in January 2018 to 46.7% in June 2019. That's a pretty massive jump in a relatively short period..."

How about datacenters? After vulnerabilities, intel lost noticeable performance. Do datacenters buy Intel these days?

"AMD’s Data Center Business Is Set to Take Market Share from Intel

Previously, we learned that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) gained server CPU (central processing unit) market share in 2018 as more and more cloud, HPC (high-performance computing), and enterprise customers adopted its first-generation EPYC CPU.

AMD is currently working on bringing its second-generation EPYC server CPU, built on TSMC’s (TSM) 7 nm (nanometer) node, to the market in mid-2019..."

As the old saying goes... "Nobody ever got fired for buying Intel". Despite price and/or performance I have run both over the years and Intel has always been more reliable for me. Aside from the CPU the supporting chipset factors in as well and Intel does it better.

New games are very taxing on system resources and older games may not be optimized or hardware accelerated. As long as you are not overheating you should be fine. Heat is what will destroy your machine.

Which Xeon are they talking about? What price? There's a slew of new Intel Xeons in the Cascade Lake line. Source For example: the Xeon 8284 w/28 cores is 15,460 USD. If AMD can provide a comparable processor for half that price, now that's impressive.

There is also by report an upcoming line with the topmost having up to 56 cores--Cooper Lake.

Yes, heat is something to always be mindful of, esp if not running your AC. Tx for reminder.

Yes, that's the thing. My slow GPU is overheating with new video games, I'm guessing this won't happen with fast GPU's. My CPU will often run at 25%, which is one core. This happens with both old and new games.

I think it gets to 90C degrees, at least according to MSI Afterburner. After that it stays on this temp, but how is that even possible, know what I mean? I'm sure it keeps getting hotter.

Yep, that's overheating territory. Sounds like a candidate for a better heat sink. Have you explored that possibility? I had a coworker with an overheating GPU once. There was no thermal material (paste or pad) between the heat sink and the chip. We put some paste on it and it was fine after that.

I'm too lazy to solve these kind of problems, but yes it seems like there is something wrong with the cooling system. That's why I will no longer play high end games on this machine. I will buy the new Xbox or PlayStation when they are released next year.

Fair enough. If you don't want to mess with it a game console is a good option. I've had a PS3 for a dozen years and have no complaints. I've had an Xbox One S since early this year. I wouldn't buy it again. I may buy the next PlayStation.
