Nintendo is updating the original version of the Switch to offer better battery life — up to nine hours on a single charge, according to the official Nintendo of Japan website.

Otherwise, the Switch appears to be unchanged in terms of system specs and features; this is the same launch version of the Nintendo Switch, just longer lasting. The system looks identical and is identically priced as the launch model (29,980 yen in Japan).

According to Nintendo’s website, the new Switch revision will last between 4.5-9 hours per charge. Nintendo estimates that players will get about 5.5 hours of playtime with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the updated model. On the original Switch, Nintendo estimated 2.5-6.5 hours of playtime, depending on the game, with about 3 hours of playtime in Breath of the Wild.

Nintendo is giving some Switch owners the option to trade in their recently purchased systems for the latest revision of the console that offers improved battery life. But the offer to upgrade to the latest model of the Nintendo Switch appears to be limited to customers who purchased the original version of the Switch on or after July 17, the same day Nintendo announced the system update.

News of the exchange program originated on Reddit, where user DarthMewtwo said, “Nintendo told me if you bought your Switch after July 17th 2019, they can exchange it for the new upgraded model for free.”
Polygon contacted Nintendo’s customer service department and verified those details with a representative. Customer service told us that customers will need to cover shipping and insurance costs, and that customers should transfer their purchases to the new system using a Nintendo Switch Online account.

Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in July, but overall hardware sales were down big-time. Industry-tracking firm The NPD Group released its July report today, and it confirms that U.S. consumers are looking ahead.

“Hardware spending in July 2019 fell 22 percent when compared to a year ago, to $169 million,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. [...] Spending declined across all in-market console platforms in July, while only Nintendo Switch has experienced sales gains year to date.”
Nintendo just launched a slightly upgraded Switch in August.
But for now, Nintendo is on top.

Nintendo claims that the only difference between its new, revised Switch and the older model is improved battery life. Not content to take Nintendo’s word for it, some popular YouTubers put their brand new, currently hard-to-find units to the test, cracking them open to search for any new undisclosed features or hardware tweaks along the way.
The consensus? Nintendo isn’t fibbing about that battery life. But unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be anything else inside to get too excited about.

If you’re looking for more reasons to upgrade to the new Switch than just for its improved battery life, you should be skeptical of what some teardowns conclude.
As we discovered in documents posted to the FCC, the new Switch revision does run on a slightly different Nvidia Tegra X1 chip.
They claim that the die has been shrunk from 20nm in the older Switch to 16nm in the new version, but again, it seems that increased battery life is the only perk of this upgrade.

In brief: Nintendo breaks its own records all the time, and lately, the company's ever-popular Switch console has been one of the main reasons why. The hybrid console outsold the Wii U's lifetime sales in its first year on the market, and now, it's managed to overtake one of the oldest and most beloved retro consoles out there: the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

During 2019's holiday season, the Nintendo Switch managed to surpass the 52 million sales mark by about 500,000 units. For the sake of comparison, the SNES moved an impressive 49.79 million units during its lengthy lifespan.
Regardless, times change, and it was probably only a matter of time before Nintendo's latest and greatest console started dethroning some of its oldest (and best-selling) predecessors.

As others have pointed out, the Nintendo Switch's next "rival" is the original Nintendo Entertainment System, which boasts 61.91 million lifetime sales. Whether or not the Switch's growth will continue and allow it to beat that figure remains to be seen.

Nintendo will start selling a special Animal Crossing Switch in March, but it won't be releasing a brand new model this year. Shuntaro Furukawa, the gaming giant's president and CEO, has laid rumors to rest that an upgraded version of the console is on the way.

In a call with investors, the executive said (PDF):

"Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020." Instead, the company will focus on "communicat[ing] the appeal" of the current consoles and expanding their userbase.
We still don't know if Nintendo truly is working on a Pro version of the console, but Furukawa's statement makes it clear that fans won't be getting their hands on one this year even if a Pro model is in development.

Nintendo just released the 10.0.0 firmware for its Switch gaming console and finally added a feature users have wanted since the system launched. The update allows downloaded games to be transferred to an SD card, giving users flexibility and freedom.
Previously, Switch owners had few options if their console ran out of storage space. The best option was to delete a game and tell the system to redownload it but onto an SD card rather than the internal memory.

Only “downloadable software, update data, and DLC” are supported at this time, and some user save points and update data cannot be transferred.
This move is a welcomed addition to the Switch, where physical media and downloaded data coexist.

The update also added the ability to remap controller buttons and save up to five different button layouts.

Nintendo might be working on a dual-screen Nintendo Switch according to data gleaned by a security researcher in the console’s 10.0.0 firmware update.

Mike Heskin, a self-confessed “reverse engineer and infosec enthusiast” did some digging into the latest Switch firmware update and found what he claims is “preliminary support” for a new model of Switch codenames ‘nx-bcd.’ Heskin claims that support is for a second screen.
That’s not to say the new codename in the latest firmware guarantees a new Switch model, but it’s an interesting snippet of data to chew over.

The NPD Group reports that all three console makers have seen remarkable growth in Q1 2020. Total hardware sales for March alone ballooned to $461 million, while first-quarter spending on systems grew to $773 million, a 2-percent gain over last year.

March also saw total spending for hardware, software, accessories, and game cards reach nearly $1.6 billion, a 35-percent gain YOY, and the largest recorded March spend in 12 years.

"This is the highest reported spend for a March month since the $1.8 billion achieved in March 2008," said NPD's Mat Piscatella.
"Nintendo Switch set a new all-time record for hardware unit sales in a March month," said Piscatella. "The previous high [was] set by Nintendo Switch in its March 2017 launch month."

Nintendo announced it intends to boost production of the handheld by as much as 10 percent, which is an extra 2 million units over last year.

Which, would be quite the thing -- and this new Nintendo Switch console could very well be the long-rumoured Pro edition that has supposedly been in development for a while. First Taiwanese publication Econimic Daily reported on the console's supposed 2021 appearance, with Bloomberg now chiming in to add that sources are reporting that the new Switch will support "4K high-definition graphics".

The current Switch is powered by NVIDIA's mobile Tegra technology -- which is impressive but certainly not what you'd call 4K-ready. If we had to guess we'd say that Nintendo was working with NVIDIA to create a new custom chip to ensure full backwards compatibility.
The reports also indicate that Nintendo will begin production on the new Nintendo Switch console in 2021 -- with a planned release sometime later that year.

In a report by Bloomberg, it was reported that the Japanese console manufacturer is asking several game developers to get ready for the Nintendo Switch Pro model, a device that allegedly supports 4K output.

“Several outside game developers, speaking anonymously as the issue is private, said that Nintendo has asked them to make their games 4K-ready, suggesting a resolution upgrade is on its way,” Bloomberg published.
Whether or not this New Nintendo Switch will actually hit 4K in its software library is uncertain at best. While some games may render out a 4K user interface for large TVs, the internal resolution of their actual visuals will most probably fall below that for a lot of games.
