Alphabet enters enterprise cybersecurity market, launches Chronicle

Google’s parent company Alphabet has announced its entry into the lucrative enterprise cybersecurity market through Chronicle, a company started in early 2016 as a project at X, Alphabet’s “moonshot factory.”

Chronicle has now “graduated” to the status of an independent company within Alphabet, and is lead by Stephen Gillett, formerly an executive-in-residence at Google Ventures and Chief Operating Officer of Symantec.

VirusTotal, a malware intelligence service acquired by Google in 2012, will be become a part of the new company, but Chronicle will also offer a new product.

Alphabet's Moonshot Factory And Stephen Gillett Create Chronicle To Revolutionize CyberSecurity

Stephen Gillett has had a remarkable career for someone as young as he is. At 42, he has been the CIO and General Manager of Digital Ventures at Starbucks, the President of Digital, Marketing, and Operations at Best Buy, and the Chief Operating Officer of Symantec. In 2015, after Symantec was split into two companies, Gillett exited. Soon thereafter, he joined Google Ventures (now known as GV) as an Executive-in-Residence. He would eventually join Alphabet's "Moonshot Factory" X (formerly Google X), and it was during his time there that the idea for Chronicle arose.

Chronicle is still largely in stealth mode, but Gillett took time to speak with me about his vision for the company, its progress in garnering customers, the process of graduating from X, and the advantages of growing a business within Alphabet as opposed to seeking funding from more traditional venture capital.

I've quickly read the article, but it's still not clear what will be so revolutionary. I'm guessing it will be just another EDR product.

Enterprise user management and security
Since this is an enterprise product, Chronicle is naturally promising corporate access to VirusTotal. A lot of companies want the ability to integrate Virus Total Enterprise’s account directory with their existing identity provider.

Chronicle Inc., the cybersecurity subsidiary that Alphabet Inc. formed last year, will be folded into Google Cloud.
Google Cloud Chief Executive Thomas Kurian announced the move in a blog post this morning. Kurian, who came aboard last November after a 22-year career at Oracle Corp., wrote that the Chronicle team will be absorbed into his group over the coming weeks.

Chronicle spun out of Alphabet’s X skunkworks lab last year [...] Less than two months after becoming an independent subsidiary, it launched Backstory [...] Backstory runs on Google Cloud [...]
The unit’s products will be integrated with the security services in Google Cloud. VirusTotal will help provide improved threat detection in cloud deployments, while Backstory is set to complement the platform’s existing breach management features.

“Chronicle’s Backstory investigation flows, added to Google Cloud’s detection, incident management and remediation capabilities, will create a comprehensive end-to-end solution that will enable customers to detect and mitigate threats faster, both within their cloud deployments and across their entire enterprise,” Kurian wrote.

This works because Chronicle’s products and engineering team complement what Google Cloud offers. There isn’t much overlap. Chronicle has its VirusTotal malware intelligence services and its Backstory security telemetry platform. Google Cloud has detection, incident management, and remediation capabilities.

And of course, Chronicle was built using Alphabet and Google technologies. They never should have been separated.

In early 2018, Google’s parent conglomerate Alphabet announced the birth of a new "independent" startup that was supposed to revolutionize cybersecurity. Chronicle was meant to be a new type of startup.
The promise was radical: Chronicle would leverage machine learning and Alphabet’s near-endless well of security telemetry data about known malware and internet infrastructure [...]

"We want to 10x the speed and impact of security teams’ work by making it much easier, faster and more cost-effective for them to capture and analyze security signals that have previously been too difficult and expensive to find," Gillett wrote in a blog post announcing Chronicle.
At the time it was unclear what Chronicle was going to be.

Just a year and a half after the announcement, however, Chronicle has been folded back into Google, within its Cloud department—and some employees feel Chronicle management abandoned and betrayed the original vision.

"Chronicle is dead," a current employee told Motherboard. "Stephen [Gillett] and Google killed it."

In an interview with The Information last month, Gillett seemed to try to have it both ways, admitting that some employees were disappointed about joining Google, while calling the folding "not [a] disappointment."

"We have zero employee issues," he said.
But the loss of three of the highest ranking Chronicle employees, as well as the departure of other Chronicle workers, suggest that Google faces challenges in figuring out what to do with one of the industry's most hotly watched and anticipated cybersecurity companies.

"The honeymoon phase was really only about two weeks long, and then the Google ecosystem and the inability to be legitimately agile, and do rapid prototyping, and [be] actually innovative, became painfully apparent," the former employee said.

Google is officially expanding its Chronicle cybersecurity platform into the threat detection realm, with the promise to bring “Google-scale threat analysis” to enterprises.

Initially, Chronicle was focused more on threat-hunting and investigations, and assumed that the customer was receiving alerts from elsewhere that would initiate their investigations. Back in February, however, Google set the wheels in motion for proactive threat detection and alert functionality.

“The plan was always to add the ability to offer advanced detections — i.e. create our own alerts — in addition to investigations,” Rick Caccia, head of marketing for cloud security at Google Cloud, told VentureBeat.
