"WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange charged with violating Espionage Act

Federal prosecutors on Thursday accused WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of violating the Espionage Act, bringing against him a new, 18-count indictment alleging he unlawfully obtained and disclosed national defense information.

The new charges dramatically raise the stakes of the case both for Assange and the news media, raising questions about the limits of the First Amendment and protections for publishers of classified information....

In the past decade, prosecutors have increasingly used the Espionage Act to pursue government employees or ex-employees who leak classified information to reporters. The law was originally written during World War I to target spies and traitors, and has been used intermittently since, including when the government prosecuted the source of the so-called Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War..."

"Assange won’t face charges over role in devastating CIA [Vault 7] leak...

The Justice Department has decided not to charge Julian Assange for his role in exposing some of the CIA’s most secret spying tools...

It’s a move that has surprised national security experts and some former officials,...The decision also means that Assange will not face punishment for publishing one of the CIA’s most potent arsenal digital codes used to hack devices, dubbed Vault 7...

Prosecutors were stymied by several factors.

First, the government is facing a ticking clock in its efforts to extradite Assange to the United States from the United Kingdom, where he is being held. Extradition laws require the U.S. to bring any additional charges against Assange within 60 days of the first indictment...

Second, prosecutors were worried about the sensitivity of the Vault 7 materials, according to an official familiar with the deliberations over whether to charge Assange. Broaching such a classified subject in court risks exposing even more CIA secrets, legal experts said. The CIA has never officially confirmed the authenticity of the leaked documents,..."

It's a mistake for people to conflate how they feel about Julian Assange with the actions the governments are taking against him. His declining popularity serves their interests.

What is happening to him is a cautionary tale about the limitations of "rights" and "freedoms" regardless of what our constitutions say.

All that shows that constitutions are just worthless papers and citizens don't even want to know about crimes some people do.

Very true indeed but he may find the price of that fame very high if he appears before a U.S. court?

At least Pam will be able to bring him cookies now and again, if she remembers?
