If online shoppers don't care about music and video, it looks like Walmart might be a go. In any event, all the best to them. Competition ain't easy.

The Amazon 1-Day shipping is for select areas only.

I've been shopping Amazon since 2001 and I'm in my third year of Prime.

I placed 104 orders last year and 31 so far this year. I always do local shopping and purchasing first, like my Roku Ultra, a DOCSIS modem, a Logitech Harmony... I'm still shopping local groceries/supermarket items.

If otherwise I'd have to drive all over town to find something or if the pricing disparity is too great, it's Amazon.

I have yet to see the Thermos Stainless Steel Beverage Can Insulator for 12 Ounce Can I found on Amazon anywhere on the shelf locally.

And where else could I shop "dash cam" (over 9000 results) and buy from sellers like zhiroad, 70mai or TOOGOO?

Restrict to sold by Amazon and you'll be OK for Terms & Conditions. Even "Fullfilled by Amazon" can have fine-print issues.

If one uses Amazon Smile, 0.5% of your purchase $$ are given over to a favorite charity of your choosing, of which there are a whole boatload.

Amazon Studios has released some impressive movies and shows. The "included with Prime" (free) and the rent or buy (fairly and competitively priced) catalogs are up there with the best. The best IMHO.

As far as unbridled capitalism is concerned, Amazon isn't all that bad of a benevolent despot. Beats the heck out of a politburo.

So one of the wealthiest persons in the world wants to put people out of work to make more money. Sounds great. Can they come up with automated customers when there are no more jobs? From a technology standpoint it sounds great but do these people think these things through to their logical conclusion?

And many of us can venture a pretty good guess that the demand is intense for such convenience.

As a long time freight expediter this sort of snap delivery is right up the alley.
Although it is a very demanding schedule for the carrier and driver, it's not out of the question.
I been given dispatches of cargo from one state and given a guaranteed delivery time of 7AM next morning at the dock 3 states away. And not via 18 wheeler but either box truck with team or 1 ton cargo van single driver.

Starting Monday, the offer is available "coast to coast" in the United States with no minimum purchase, the company announced.

"The most popular one-day items range from books, beauty and baby wipes to devices, dish detergent and doggie bags," the company said in a press release. Amazon (AMZN) said it "will keep adding more selection and expanding our delivery areas to ensure Prime members get their products faster than ever."

Stock prices of traditional retailers, including Walmart and Target, took a hit when Amazon promised to step up its shipping game. Wall Street fears Amazon's competitors will further squeeze their already tight bottom lines trying to speed up their own deliveries.

Morrisons agreed to supply Amazon with groceries in 2016 and the service now includes delivery within the hour for some customers.
So far shoppers in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and some parts of London can use the same-day service.

The message, sent from an automated email address Tuesday, informed her that the Align nutritional supplements she ordered two weeks earlier were probably counterfeit. “If you still have this product, we recommend that you stop using it immediately and dispose of the item,” the email reads, and says she would be receiving a full refund. It’s not clear how many other customers may have purchased the fake supplements. Amazon confirmed that it had sent out the email but declined to specify the number of customers impacted.

On a call today with reporters following its Q2 earnings report, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said that while customers are responding well to 1-day shipping, costs came in slightly above his earlier estimate.
But the Seattle company isn’t too worried about investing heavily now for something it hopes will drive more revenue down the line

Amazon will focus on rolling out 1-day shipping for more products first in North America and then internationally. The company is hoping that the strategy adds more value to its $119/year Prime memberships and increases the amount of purchases customers make on Amazon versus elsewhere — including physical retailers.

Often with little training, and at times piloting vans in dangerous states of disrepair, Amazon drivers have crashed into cars, bicycles, houses, people, and pets. And under constant pressure to deliver ever more packages, drivers have piled parcels so high on their dashboards that they couldn’t see out the windshield...

UPS and FedEx, the traditional powers of the logistics world, are deeply invested in safety. UPS, which spends $175 million a year on safety training alone, even has a policy prohibiting drivers from taking unnecessary left turns to reduce exposure to oncoming traffic, finish routes faster, and save fuel. Both firms are also heavily regulated by the government, and many of their trucks are subject to regular federal safety inspections and can be put out of service at any time by the Department of Transportation.

Amazon has evaded a request from a group of senators demanding that it disclose the names of the third-party companies it contracts to deliver packages all across the United States.

In September, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) along with Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) penned a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. The letter was in response to a report by BuzzFeed News and ProPublica that uncovered the company’s use of contractors to deliver its packages, with a focus on the poor treatment and conditions those workers face in addition to the lack of adequate workplace protection and benefits.
However, it did not disclose the names of any of the over 800 delivery providers it hires.

“I’m deeply disappointed by Amazon’s evasive response,” Blumenthal said in a statement. “Amazon’s claims that it regularly audits and sanctions delivery service providers ring hollow given the troubling facts laid out in these reports.
“Amazon chooses to hide behind its delivery partners and a mandated veil of secrecy to protect itself from a disastrous record and true accountability,” Blumenthal said.

But there’s an area where Amazon’s growth has been noticeably restrained: low-priced goods where the cost for Amazon to ship them is higher than the price a customer pays for the item.

Until now.
Over the last few months, Amazon has removed several barriers that previously made it difficult for customers to purchase a single sub-$5 item on its own. The result is a flood of low-priced items — a $2 roll of dental floss or a 75-cent makeup brush — made available to Prime customers with free one-day shipping.

Say you want a single stick of Suave deodorant for $1.99 or a single package of dental floss for $1.79 or even a 75-cent “crease brush” to apply eye shadow. If you’re an Amazon Prime member in the US, you can now get each of them on their own — tomorrow — for no added shipping fee.

Amazon's string of record profits appears to have collapsed, after the company's bold plan to speed up its shipping is saddling Amazon with more expenses.

The world's largest e-commerce company on Thursday posted third-quarter earnings that badly missed earnings expectations. Its prediction for the all-important fourth quarter, during the peak holiday retail season, was also soft.
Shares plunged 7% after hours on the earnings and guidance misses.
Shipping costs, which were already moving higher in the second quarter, sky-rocketed 46% to $9.6 billion. Total operating costs jumped 20%.

"Amazon's strategically-necessary investments in next-day delivery continued to weigh heavily on its retail profitability, with sales growth in North America of around $8 billion more than offset by a $10 billion increase in operating expenses," Moody's analyst Charlie O'Shea said Thursday.

Think Amazon is a little too eager to sign you up for Prime? You're not alone. The UK ad industry's Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that an Amazon promo for Prime was "likely to mislead" and could have tricked users into subscribing to the service.

A page in the checkout process pitched a 30-day Prime trial and prominently displayed a gold "order now with Prime" button, complete with a gray box promising "free one-day delivery," but relegated the skip option to a plain, subdued "continue and don't gain Amazon Prime benefits" link. This may have made it look like the only two options were the gold and gray boxes signing you up for Prime, the ASA said.
The ASA couldn't legally force Amazon to make changes, but did tell the company that it had to present options "clearly and prominently" in the future.

In a statement, Amazon claimed that "millions of transactions" showed that people had "positive experiences," and downplayed the ruling as the result of a "handful of complaints" and a "subjective opinion."
While it's true that many companies try to deemphasize free or lower-cost options, that doesn't make their practices acceptable.

They've started using UPS again to meet delivery timetables for my orders at least half the time. Their own in house delivery system which drops off packages at the post office has to be a lot cheaper.
