Windows 10 Announced - Released 29-Jul-2015

I have local and Admin accounts.
On Windows 10 PRO, I switched to Admin in order to proceed with the update.
I've switched to wired mouse/keyboard long time ago.

My reliability history shows only issues today when I did the hard-shutdown on my computer.

Yes, I have managed and I am able to fully boot and operate my computers after the 1903 update.
My problems started when I first updated Sandboxie and some other apps/software, and shut my computer down for the night.
Next morning, I could not pass that "rotating wheel" screen. After restoring my computer to the "fresh" 1903 status, I could work and do anything, etc...
Once again, next morning could not pass that "wheel" stage, and so on...
In short.
I can reach the normal Windows 10 1903 status and function, but...
When it's time to start my computer, after full shutdown, I start experience boot-up issues.

 

I am starting to suspect retpoline patch is causing hal.dll and ntoskrnl blue screens on my pc.Clean installed 1903 and it runs fine but then deteriorates.Any reports of crashing caused by retpoline?

 

That is what I was seeing too after upgrading two machines.

 

Nothing new with this. Saw same behavior on 1803 upgrade to 1809. Three failed Win Update attempts.

"Threw in the towel" on Win Updating. Disabled virtualization in the BIOS. Then perform an in-place upgrade to 1809 from MCT .iso download. This went in "smooth as silk."

 

Clean install, people. Don't even think upgrading.

Potential failing ugrades + time wasted to diagnose issue isnt worth considering.
Happened to me once, don't take the chance anymore.

Ditto. The amount of dll files/registry being updated is way too big to have a stable upgraded system. Clean install FTW

 

Except with a clean install Edge process starts with Windows and runs in the background. OSArmor tamed that behaviour.

I also got sick of seeing search suggestion box following me all the way around Windows. There may be a setting to disable that but I didn't have the patience to look.

 

I don't mind, I use Edge often.

You can control which apps are allowed to run in the background in the Privacy settings under Background Apps or something similar (not in 10 now so I can't look...). Just turn all of them off and you have a nice quiet system most of the time... Edge is one that you can control.

 

Reliable backup/restore program with a recovery boot disk and recent image makes a failed upgrade a trivial formality. Forget all that nonsense of trying to troubleshoot and diagnose a busted system. Just dial back to happiness in mere minutes.

 

I prefer other browsers.

I had Edge disabled in Background Apps but it did not stop Edge running. Even in 1809, once I open Edge and close it, it starts back up and runs in the background.

 

@Krusty my main is Chrome but I find Edge to be a decent secondary browser

 

I always do clean installs. No exceptions.

 

Ok, that's interesting... I usually turn almost everything off except Edge and about 3 others...

 

I leave the main Background Apps setting enabled so that Windows Spotlight works on Lock Screen, but disable each background task individually.

Overnight I upgraded one of my computers from 1703 to 1903. I had tried multiple times to upgrade to every major build released since 1703, but the upgrades always failed. With a couple of previous builds, I'd only been able upgrade with the assistance of someone who helped me fix issues found in the upgrade log files.

I was quite surprised to find my laptop showing the Windows login screen this morning, rather than an error message. Considering that the laptop had issues resulting from installing and uninstalling hundreds of programs over the last four years and for some time Windows Update had been unable to check for updates (even though I did my best to try and fix it), I'm very impressed that the upgrade completed.

Since upgrading, the laptop is running much better and Windows Update is now working again. Yes, I know that doing a clean install long ago, would have been a better option. But there is software on the laptop I wanted to keep and I enjoy trying to fix issues with Windows.

 

The upgrade did not work as well as I first thought. After I installed some updates and rebooted, the computer was seemingly stuck, with just spinning dots running. Although I could see the disk activity led occasionally coming on, I had the feeling it wouldn't boot. So I rolled back to the previous build (which was actually 1709, not 1703), which only took about 2 or 3 minutes and my computer boots again.

Told ya, upgrades are hit and miss, clean installs always hit. There is no debate about it.

 

I had the same issue. Upgrade wouldn't install for quite some time. But when it finally installed, and I rebooted the PC, it was stuck

There were a few times where the PC did booted well. So, I attempted to do a refresh this ended in error. In the end, I decided to do a clean install. Seems well so far.
