Yeah, I see that but that machine is having trouble burning a MR recovery disk too. I'll call it Machine A. That is the one I tried upgrading to 1903 already and got the black screen on restart. It does boot without issue from a MR flash drive.
On Machine B I the DVD drive is set to boot first in the BIOS and I have tried with USB drive first. All without luck.

I've had trouble booting from CDs / DVDs for a while. Usually I have better luck with CDs. I can't remember booting this machine (B) from a flash drive.

Thanks. Any BIOS updates for that MB?

I'm using the latest, but that's from 2010.

I've just tried the DVD cleaner disk in Machine A and Windows doesn't see the DVD. I've tried other DVDs with the same result but it plays CDs. This must be why I can't burn the ISO from this machine.

Rather than relying on the BIOS to determine boot drive selection, try this.

Your BIOS should have a keyboard key designated to display boot drive selection. On my Gigabyte MB it is F12. Tap on that key when rebooting and the BIOS will display a selection of devices you can boot from. Select "CD/DVD" or like displayed value. You might also have to enter a value of "Y" or the like to indicate the drive selection. Now see if the CD/DVD will boot the media.

Is this an IDE or SATA DVD drive? If it's an IDE drive, Win 10 has issues with mfg. IDE drivers. If the IDE controller chipset is not SCSI based; i.e. RAID, you can try using the MS standard PCI; i.e. PATA driver. Otherwise, you will have to check with either Intel or the Win Catalog web site to see if a Win 10 RAID driver is available

    Re: Machine B
I had to enable Mulitiboot in the BIOS to enable F12. Tried one MR CD that has worked on this machine previously but while the drive sounded busy for several minutes Machine B eventually booted into Windows. I tried burning a fresh CD and got an error. Using a DVD and it is currently burning as I type this. Will try to boot from it soon.
    Re: Machine A
Not sure about that IT Man. I'll have to look into that but I'm running out of time this morning. Real life things to do.

Does this help? It is the DVD drive that came built into my desktop PC (Machine A) if that helps.

The DVD burned successfully but Machine B still refuses to boot from the disk it burned.

Krusty, can you get a Boot Menu? That's more reliable than Boot Priority.

    F12 Boot Menu.

I just spoke to my local PC repair shop guy about the Machine A drive. He said for AU$30 to take the old drive out and replace it with a new drive.
I thought "Esc" key on boot would give me a boot menu, but something flashes briefly, then Machine B boots into Windows. I'll have to check the video out later.

Anyway, this is a bit OT now, so I might start a new thread in the Hardware section of the forum later.

Well I just had to try running the update assistant again to upgrade to v1903, because I honestly can't help myself :D This time I can happily say it all went without a hitch. I completed it with the disk cleanup, including previous windows installations, because after all, if I wanted to revert to v1803, I will simply restore a backup image.

Yeah, I've done that but no joy.

Bought the DVD burner for Machine A but the new one won't fit, so I'll have to make another trip up to see my PC repair guy, this time my desktop will go for the drive.

Anyway, enough fun for today. I'm supposed to be resting an injury, so beer o'clock.

Machine B can't burn the Win10 1903 ISO created by the MCT either.

Sigh... that isn't working either. I get a message that the disk is in use by another program. Seriously, I'm running out of disks and am sick of wasting them x 2 machines. I haven't had problems with these disks in the past (2 different brands), so something else must be going on.

Wasted yet another brand new disk. CDBurnerXP just sits there waiting for a suitable disk.

Have you tried to find out what process is accessing it? Controlled Folder Access or something similar?

I only got that error once but I tried 3 brand new DVDs. That program said it would continue when suitable disk was inserted but nothing happened after waiting with each disk.

    I haven't enabled Controlled Folders.

OK, now I'm getting somewhere, finally.

I had tried F12 using disks but no good, so just tried again booting Machine B from my MR flash drive and it booted. Yay! I am now a little more confident to try the 1903 upgrade on this machine. Until and / or unless I can burn an ISO to disk (yes, I know I can use a flash drive and I may have to, but last time I installed using that method it messed up my drive letters), a clean install is off the table.
