Greetings! I am indeed considering a refurb laptop from Newegg. Used Vista previously and was pleased until the machine died. Probably will purchase one with Windows 10 but possibly 8.1. Can anyone recommend minimum specs I should consider? My laptop use will be basic; no gaming, just Internet, MS office use, CD/DVD ripping and writing and Photoshop. Thanks very much.
I recommend buying one with an i5 CPU and 8GB of RAM. It will be quite fast and have more than enough RAM for what you plan to use it for. I'd also highly recommend getting a SSD, as they are much faster than hard drives. Ideally, get a business laptop as they usually have much better build quality than consumer ones.
With Shadow Defender in normal shadow mode, it will read from any kind of drive but NOT write to it. Whether or not the drive is SSD would make no difference as far as ShaDef is concerned. There is a way to get ShDef to write to a drive, but ShDef must be especially set to do so. If set to write to a specified drive or folder, ShaDef will write to ANY kind of drive (ramdrive, usb stick, SSD, HD, whatever.) No problem. Be aware that ShaDef is still being sold but presently seems on the verge of becoming abandonware. Check THIS thread.
+1 to all of the above. Business laptops often have better warranties, too. My Dell had on-site repair, for 3 years (if I remember right), which means that if the mobo or something is fried, they come to my house and replace the mobo right in front of my eyes. Yes, it happened.
