USA still the best. But barely.
Does wu on w10 on occasion uncheck Show Hidden Files & Folders? It has done that every once & a while on w7.

Appears that's done intentionally by MS after every Feature Upgrade. At least that has been my case for recent Upgrade versions. As MS recently cautioned if you use a restore point prior the Feature Upgrade, you will end up with a borked PC with a black screen at boot time.

I haven't ever noticed it being unchecked on Win 10. (checked should be the default setting really, it's one of the first things I change on a new install)

Unbelievable: it took 1903 without any problems at the very first attempt!

(I had been trying to upgrade it from 1803 to 1809; all attempts failed and I had to give up).

Updated to 1903 with zero issues, been like that for some time now, only in the very early days of W10 did I have one issue. Its guys that tweak W10, disable services etc who are going to have the issues for the most part. Oddly enough System Restore wasn't turnt off after this update.

Indeed. I do heavy tweaks so I don't have time to undo all of them just for an upgrade that will leave some junk anyway, so clean install is all better to me.

If anyone sees an EventID 455 ESENT error in Event Viewer's Application logs after updating to 1903 - a service complaining that it cannot open it's database - it is again (as I have noticed in a couple of previous updates) caused by the TileDataLayer service. It is a service that writes Start Menu Tiles data to a database file.
    Code:
    svchost (4304,R,98) TILEREPOSITORYS-1-5-18: Error -1023 (0xfffffc01) occurred while opening logfile C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\EDB.log.
Starting with build 1703, this method is deprecated (as in not developed anymore) and replaced by writing the data to the registry. But because Server 2016 still uses the database method the service remains deprecated (as in still not removed).

There is an easy fix though - you need to manually create needed folders (from the error message). Once you create them, the service will do it's thing, the database will be there and the error will stop for good.
    Just an FYI.

    Who would say?
We were beating our heads against the wall so hard a couple of months ago, I still feel it.
    This is a relief.

I noticed that after installing KB4497935, restarting machine and going back to Win Updates, it is still listed as being offered.
However a manual 'check for updates' makes it disappear.

Same here as well. Apparently after they add new options they forget to follow them all the way through while "testing".

No wonder why Microsoft's level of Quality Assurance has dropped to the level where it's practically a gong show. This kind of technical incompetence should be expected when corporate greed compels those in charge to "rightsize", "leverage efficiencies, "realign the workforce" and "restructure"...

Yeah, but that remaining 1% is the reason this thread has 5,000+ posts.

Updates always turned off on my two 7x64 machines. I follow Woody's advice, and wait to see what squishy stuff gets stuck in others’ shoes. :)
