With the look of someone betrayed, Facebook’s CEO has fired back at co-founder Chris Hughes and his brutal NYT op-ed calling for regulators to split up Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. “When I read what he wrote, my main reaction was that what he’s proposing that we do isn’t going to do anything to help solve those issues. [...]"

Zuckerberg’s argument boils down to the idea that Facebook’s specific problems with privacy, safety, misinformation, and speech won’t be directly addressed by breaking up the company, and that would instead actually hinder its efforts to safeguard its social networks.
He wrote in his own NYT op-ed today that “what matters is not size but rather the rights and interests of consumers, and our accountability to the governments and legislators who oversee commerce and communications . . . Big in itself isn’t bad. Success should not be penalized.”

Of those who had heard of the Onavo Protect VPN, 57 percent had used the app themselves, but 64 percent now use a paid VPN instead due to the scandals surrounding it.

During a call with reporters, Zuckerberg was pressed to address recent calls from Democratic officials and one Facebook co-founder for federal regulators to force the company to spin off WhatsApp and Instagram, previously acquired in two blockbuster deals.

“I think it kind of almost goes without saying that we exist in a very competitive and dynamic environment where new services are constantly coming up,” Zuckerberg said.
He later disputed arguments that the company has grown too dominant as an advertising player as "a little stretched," noting the company controls just around a fifth of the global digital ad market.

The Facebook chief, whose company has come under heavy scrutiny on issues from election security to harmful content to data privacy, argued a break-up would only make it more difficult to address those challenges.

“I don’t really think that the remedy of breaking up the company is going to address those,” he said. “I actually think it’s going to make it a lot harder.”

Microsoft. And part of that revolution should be the replacement of CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg

“There is a legitimate argument that he has too much power,” Stamos said. “He needs to give up some of that power. If I was him, I would go hire a new CEO for the company. He’s already acting as the chief product officer with Chris Cox gone, that’s where his passion is. He should hire a CEO that can help signal both internally and externally that the culture has to change.

Facebook has long resisted making declarations about the truthfulness of posts that could open it up to charges of censorship or political bias. Facebook will once again begin paying people to monitor how they use their phone through a new app called Study.
The app will monitor which apps are installed on a person’s phone, the time spent using those apps, the country you’re in, and additional app data that could reveal specific features you’re using, among other things.
Study’s launch comes several months after the company’s last user-tracking research app, Facebook Research, was shut down due to a pair of controversies: as TechCrunch reported [...]

The launch of Study shows that Facebook clearly feels that it still needs this data on how people are using their phones, and also that Facebook has learned a thing or two from the last controversy.
Facebook doesn’t say how much it’ll pay people to use the app, but a blog post says that “all research participants are compensated.” It’ll launch in the US and India. Not everyone will be able to sign up for Study.
