Is this a global thing? If so, why is this a global thing? Why not just stop selling Android phones in the US?

Yes it is global, but current models will still get security updates, but may not get new versions of Android. They were already banned in the US, but you could buy them from Amazon for example.

    Trade war threats, nothing serious.
Beside, Huawei has the resources to make its own OS, they already started the project months ago .

Huawei is a threat to every American telecom companies.

For the price of an IPhone XS, you can buy 2 high-end Huawei phones with equivalent or better specs. In some countries Huawei is taking over the leadership of most sold phones leaving Apple babycrying.

Huawei can product the whole telecom chain from cable to phone.

"Google offers Huawei a brief reprieve by putting its Android suspension on hold...

Google has confirmed that its suspension of Android services to the Chinese tech giant Huawei is on hold.

The move follows the US Department of Commerce's decision to grant Huawei a license of 90 days so it could help existing customers...

'Keeping phones up to date and secure is in everyone's best interests and this temporary license allows us to continue to provide software updates and security patches to existing models for the next 90 days,' a Google spokesman said..."

You are right, it will be Huawei itself providing the security patches. (I thought security updates only via latest version of the Android),
    According to the link below:

    https://www.techradar.com/au/news/h...google-pulls-access-to-core-apps-and-services

“Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry.

"Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.

Yes, you're absolutly right. they have the resources to make their own OS.
But it will take some time to get this properly working. Android is for many years on the market and it will take ages to reach the same level.
I'm also not sure if this really would be a marketing benefit when you try to sell the device abroad

Billions of potential users, apps dev won't hesitate. Chinese consumers are very patriotic, they will prioritize Chinese stuff.

if Huawei succeed where MS failed, I will have a good laugh.
