I always had that question, Perhaps coincidence or other reasons but using pc for all those years
    installing and uninstalling many softwares

some times after installing a software ( I do not mean a software specially made to optimize your pc ) even though it might decrease the pc overall performances there have been times that after installing a software my pc performance has become much better.

Can it be possible and how?

(Again I am not talking about a software that is specially made to boost and optimize a PC)

There is no such software. You need to upgrade your hardware to make you PC faster (more RAM etc.).

Try something like processes/services/autostart managers e.g. Process Hacker, System Explorer, Anvir Task Manager. You will be able controll and manage what is currently working in your system and what want to do this changing autostart entries.

    Dunno. Maybe.

If you want to make to make your PC faster, upgrade your hardware. You may also have a look at your programs and get rid of those that you no longer need. @ichito mentioned some useful tools that help you manage your processes, software, services etc.

then your question was without merit and doesn't warrant more answers

The question is too vague, what kind of software after being installed made you feel your pc being faster?

If security ones, drivers altitude and many other factors may be an answer.
In fact, your pc isn't faster but less slow.

Nope it's not imagination in my opinion. Perhaps I've not noticed it as much on my Windows 8 but I am certain (as odd as that sounds) there is been programs (not ram adjusters) that made Windows XP seem to pick up performance and just become a bit more snappier.

This is happened for me numerous times before on XP and occasionally but somewhat more rare on Windows 8.1.

I can't explain it except there must been certain (for me security) programs that specially interacted within the circuitry patterns of the O/S that improved it. Perhaps more to do with less fragmentation or some built in short defrag run. It's all I could come up with for the boost which was definitely noticeable and completely unexpected but welcome surprise.

According to Microsoft, it is possible, just look at their own game mode, which basically stops unnecessary services and prioritizes processes. People always laughed about optimizers and now MS is doing it. :argh:
On the more serious note, optimizing with tweaks and software is more about polishing performance rather than increasing it, eg to avoid lagging/stuttering. Process Lasso is an interesting software in this regard.

This is getting silly. Everything mentioned here is about REDUCING the load on the system which includes the OS. But if you take the system with no software load on it there is no software that can speed it up.

Even with default system you can for example disable things like indexing of files by Windows which may create some serious load in least desirable moments. In Windows installing proper drivers also may help to use full potential of hardware. Linux has a bunch of knobs to tweak virtual memory subsystem for specific scenarios.
I know this is not making hardware faster. It is just enabling to use full potential of hardware, reduce load from unneeded things and optimizing for specific scenarios.

I don't know about current state of overclocking, but in the past there were specialized programs to increase clock frequency on graphics cards. Some people with specific models had luck and even enabled more cores on GPU.

USA still the best. But barely.
    Putting hardware aside.

Then there's the variables of lowering resource consumption, tweaking settings & fixing mistakes.

    That's it.

I don't remember which programs they were since XP is a long time ago now but I do know some security programs seemed to speed up the O/S after it was installed and running. Probably making better use of services and drivers for optimum protections as well.

Sounds ludicrous but true as rain. Didn't care why, just cared that something improved my PC that I didn't expect after installing a new program.

If you have several programs that are all set to start up automatically when you boot your computer or log into your user account, what happens is they all jostle with each other, and jockey for first position. This is called a "bottleneck". Sometimes, the loser doesn't even start up at all. :(
So you could have a situation where a light program that you added to your system wins over a heavy program, causing the heavy program to start up later, or not at all. That could improve system performance.

it is what i said with "driver altitude".

Reference shmu26's post #18 -- is there any way for a user to assign a start-up priority or sequence to each program on his or her computer's start-up list?

yes. anvir task manager allows you to delay startup items. there are some other free tools too.

    • I installed Anvir Task Mgr (ATMgr) just today. I checked ATMgr's Startup Tab's right-click menu. The only option that seemed somewhat applicable was "Move to delayed startup list." ATMgr's instructions state...
It looks like ATMgr will do the job. However, you mentioned there are other tools to do this job. Are any of them better or just as good as ATMgr? If so, name please.

since you're already an atm user, i'd say stick with it. the alternatives are not (significantly) any better imo. for instance, winpatrol allows you to delay startup items too, but atm allows more granular control over delay time.

So far everything described is stuff that removes the load on the cpu. Nothing that by itself that can make the cpu run faster.
