If Sandboxie ceases to exist what would you choose along the same principle of protection?
I'm interested to know what your choices would be under the virtualization/compartmentalization apps out there.

well, i don't see any sign of it going anywhere, and it's the best of "its kind" . so, no reason to search for alternatives. :thumb:

ReHIPS is the only viable alternative that I know of

    Same here.

However rehips "sandboxes" works via tightened user profiles using Windows own mechanisms.

rehips is much more than a sandboxing app. it's a must-have sw for any security geek but the op is looking for an app that will work "along the same principle of protection"[sic] as sbie "under the virtualization/compartmentalization"[sic] category. so i guess it'd be giving him more than what he wants.

There is indeed a lot of truth to that. ReHIPS at default settings does more than just sandboxing, although it can be run in "Permissive" mode, in which case it is roughly comparable to Sandboxie in a lot of ways.
ReHIPS could be described as "compartmentalization", I think that would be quite accurate. Technically speaking, it uses "isolation" rather than "virtualization", but from the user's perspective, it is quite similar.

I have tried Shade and I can't say it is a viable alternative to SBIE.

Linux with firejail, and windows os as virtual machine guests in Linux host.

I think the main reason for Sandboxie updates is the never-ending chase of Chrome and FF.

And how would that run the stuff that won't work in linux. That is not a solution to replace Sandboxie.

    I mean...

    https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/131956
    https://www.sandboxie.com/Maintenance.php
Seems kinda odd the "maintenance" of Sandboxie happened almost exactly 1 year after they announce the end of sale.

Someone asked on the Sandboxie forum if Sandboxie is included in the end of support stuff.

    https://community.sophos.com/produc...fter-december-2019-as-some-users-here-implied

    No answer so far.

This is exactly why I asked about the Sophos sandbox version. Nothing can replace Sandboxie in my book. Furthermore, the Sophos site is confusing, I can't get straight information on pricing and non-business availability. Possibly too expensive to merit home use esp. if you bundle it with their firewall? So that's a turn-off, unless there will be consideration for Sandboxie users in the scenario that Sandboxie goes dark at the end of the year. :(:thumbd:

Wait, I have not had any kind of personal confirmation regarding the announcement from anyone. What I wrote and posted here at Wilders a few days ago was that the announcement was brought up at the original Sandboxie forum (around May, last year), and Sandboxie support stated that Sandboxie was not part of the announcement.

Unfortunately we dont have the forum anymore, to search. It would be fairly easy to find the thread or threads were that announcement was mentioned. It might have been brought up, not once but perhaps two or three times.

I searched here but cant get to May 2018.

I also searched Google to see if somehow I got a cache page or something, but got nothing.

IMDB, would you please quit using that b e stuff, is annoying and easy to miss. I didn't see the letters or realized you were mentioning me the first couple of times I read your post I am quoting.

    Appguard, and a external back-up.
    SBIE is way over rated.

Well I am admittedly a fanboy of Appguard, but Sandboxie is still unique. But I am not worried. Sophos is a good company, and if they did stop selling and supporting sandboxie, I am sure they would in s ome manner allow us to continue using it. Version 5.30 could take us well into the future.

We forgot light virtualization software like Shadow Defender, Deepfreeze or timefreeze. To me, they are the best alternatives in terms of protection and usability, one click to activate and one reboot to deactivate, and the system is back to clean state.

I often install those to my happy clicking customers, after that I never had calls for infections.

And unless you use Uber-sophisticated samples you can even do quite good malware testing.

Downside, can't test software that need reboot to be fully installed.

With how often Windows 10 updates breaks something about Sandboxie and how often new versions of web browsers doesn't work properly with Sandboxie, I am afraid it won't last us long. Unless of course we want to stay on same Windows + browser version forever, which in itself is more of a security risk than not using Sandboxie at all.

With ReHIPS, things don't break when there is an update. Run it in Permissive mode, and it is pretty similar to SBIE, but with an IMPORTANT difference: it doesn't automatically sandbox your downloads, unless you run them by means of a sandboxed program. It only automatically sandboxes the program, not the download folder. (For full protection against malicious downloads, you need to run ReHIPS in Standard or Expert mode, in which case, ReHIPS is like NVT EXE Radar Pro + SBIE.)

I edited this post a little, I hope it is clearer and more accurate.
