Microsoft's Windows Subsystem for Linux is a useful tool. How can you get more out of it?

One of the more interesting aspects of recent Windows 10 builds is support for the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).
Setting up WSL is easy enough; all you need to do is enable feature support for WSL and download a distribution from the Windows Store. Most users will gravitate to Ubuntu, [...]

However, the choice in the Windows Store is bigger and more interesting than Ubuntu. Alongside it you'll find two releases of SuSE Enterprise Server (12 and 15), Debian, and Kali Linux.

One of the more interesting options is Kali Linux. Intended for use by security professionals, it's a version of Debian that comes bundled with a wide selection of security tools — with a focus on penetration testing.

Now that there's a growing number of Linux distributions in the Windows Store, and tools that let you roll your own WSL installations, Windows looks likely to regain its place as the developer tool of choice.

Updated article:

Update 5/13/19: The Arch Linux distribution on the Microsoft Store is not an authorized version. An Arch Linux team member has also pointed out that the distribution on the Microsoft Store added an unknown repository to the pacman.conf file, so if you install packages through it, it is not known if they have been tampered with.

With that said, use at your own risk.

Thanks to Windows Subsystem for Linux, we can now run Terminal of various Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, SUSE Linux, Fedora. The latest to join is openSUSE-Leap-15-1.
openSUSE-Leap-15-1 is now available on the Microsoft Store and you can download it right now.

Canonical makes Ubuntu for Windows SubSystem for Linux a priority

Ubuntu was the first Linux supported by WSL on Windows 10. Since then, many other Linux distros have appeared on WSL.

In the ad for an Ubuntu desktop software engineer, Canonical stated it's looking for someone who can keep "Ubuntu at the forefront of what's possible on WSL. We think WSL is a fantastic way for Windows users to experience Ubuntu on their desktop [...]
Specifically, it's "looking for someone to lead the engineering in Ubuntu for WSL features and Windows integration."

What this move tells me is Canonical is doubling down on the Linux desktop on every and all platforms. It also tells me that Whitewater Foundry, the company behind PengWin, will have real competition going forward as the leading WSL distribution.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS for Windows 10 Released on Microsoft Store

In their first Windows LTS release in two years, Canonical has released Ubuntu 20.04 for the Windows 10 Subsystem for Linux on the Microsoft Store.
The last release of Ubuntu was almost two years ago on May 2018 when Ubuntu 18.04 LTS was released and version 20.04 includes a wide range of improvements, program updates, and fixes.

For users who had previously installed the Ubuntu 18.0.4 LTS release, you may have issues upgrading it, but there is a workaround.

For users of Ubuntu 18.04 who rarely use it, it is far easier to remove the old versions and just install Ubuntu 20.04 from the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft Announces First Preview Of GPU Support Within WSL2

Last month at the Build 2020 conference, Microsoft demonstrated a few samples of Linux GUI-based apps running on Windows 10 directly from WSL2. Along the same lines, Microsoft also revealed plans to bring GPU device support for Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2).

Now, almost a month later, Microsoft has finally announced the first preview of GPU compute inside the Linux environment running on Windows via WSL2. Currently, a preview of this most in-demand feature is only available to users under the Windows Insiders program.
GPU Hardware Acceleration Through NVIDIA CUDA And DirectML
To add support for GPU in WSL2, Microsoft integrated GPU virtualization technology into WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model). If you want to know more technical details, read our article here about DirectX on Linux via WSL2.

As of now, Microsoft has added support only for CUDA-enabled NVIDIA GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) and DirectML API for any DirectX 12 GPU from Intel and AMD. However, support for NVIDIA GPUs with DirectML will come later.
If you’re running Windows Insider Build 20150 or higher, you can now use NVIDIA’s CUDA to optimize your computational task by leveraging GPU hardware acceleration.
