Nobody should be surprised. Most folks didn't get Chrome on their device by actively seeking it out. It was slipped into the installer for something else with an obscure, pre-selected checkbox.
Yes -- any tendency toward decency & honesty is a definite disadvantage in a world populated by dishonest, manipulative outfits such as Googledy-goo.
I wouldn't have expected any different from a large multinational. It's the way they operate. In my experience Firefox runs just as fast and well on macOS and Ubuntu as Chrome does. I prefer it in many ways to Chrome, although I use both. The demise of Firefox has been discussed for years. And will be for many more. I've been using it for over ten years. I honestly expect to be still using it in ten years time. Google's dirty tricks department will have to work harder.
Well, if Microsoft doesn't drop the ball, Edge will do to Chrome what Chrome did to WebKit.....and we might have a better web again with the emergence of a new fork of Blink. One can hope.
Google forgot about the "dont be evil" code of conduct many years ago, but if Firefox is alive is because Google is still funding Mozilla with its default search provider partnership. And yes, I know that Mozilla have other revenue sources, but they are insignificant if compared to Google funding.
Business is business. Don't expect your competitors to help you... Billions of dollars are in the balance, not few bucks.
Yes correct, because how on earth did Chrome get such a huge market share? But it's difficult for me to sympathize with Mozilla at the moment, because the new Firefox Quantum has been a huge disaster. But still, Google should be regulated and fined for pulling this kind of stuff.

?? For me it does work like a charm in Windows and Gnu/Linux OSes. I must admit biggest performance increment I felt around Firefox 60 and 61 releases (3 to 4 releases after FF Quantum).
This is not about cutting partnership. Such tactics should get sanctioned with fines that really hurt. Period.
Since when has it been a disaster? Are you running Windows 95? Maybe on Windows. On macOS and Ubuntu Firefox runs superbly. I don't notice any performance difference to Chrome or Safari. It's been my default browser on Ubuntu for years (it is actually the Ubuntu default browser). It still looks good. Firefox Quantum not being a disaster on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
Like member Pharao said, Google tried to sabotage Firefox. You can not build websites in a way that they will start to malfunction on other browsers. The engine has been improved and now is just as good as Blink (from Chrome), but lack of customization options is a major deal breaker for me. In the old Firefox you could fix this with certain extensions, but not anymore. Mozilla dropped the ball.

Lack of customization options is a disaster for me. Extensions like Tab Mix Plus and Classic Theme Restorer don't work anymore. And that wouldn't be a big deal if those Mozilla morons integrated certain features, but they just don't care. And the bookmarks manager is still not tab-based, what a joke.
Well, if you can't live without those extensions I suppose it's a bit of a downer. Firefox's bookmarks manager has always been a bit weird. Overall I still find Fx as being fairly customisable and with some decent extensions. It runs really well for me.
