RealPlayer is another program I wish I'd never installed. Ostensibly it is a good idea, the reality is quite different. Thank god for VLC I say.

I've never used VLC but i was always a loyal user of JetAudio, until recently i started to play some high bitrate HD videos on my Laptop with netbook specs . . . it started to stutter all the time, so i decided to look for an alternative and found MPC-HC, now i'm hooked. :D

I use BSPlayer. Why is it not included into the poll?

Using Potplayer as default, VLC portable as backup. I have GOM as reserve.

I think SMPlayer deserved a better score.

Compared with MPC-HC it has much more configurable toolbars (dozens and dozens of buttons) and very useful options: fast forward and slow motion (where both image and sound remain of quality), jump video by variable time sets, YouTube player where you can snapshot or record the video, etc.

Compared to VLC it starts faster, uses less resources and is more stable.

It only needs to play ISO files to be complete. Apart from this small detail it has all it takes (and a bit more) to be a default choice.

Agreed. I got tired of VLC forgetting my bookmarks (buggy install perhaps?), and it doesn't seem as easy as Gom to use with a media remote...for me, at least.

KMplayer I had similar issues with but Gom has been rock-solid so far.

    Hi to all,
    i need your help.
I use Potplayer but soon I will have to replace it.
I need a lightweight video player like Potplayer.
Considering the link below it seems to me that SMPlayer is the most similar choice:

What do you think about it?

After trying tons of them and even the hot mainstream type like PowerDVD this end is settled in for FREE releases of MPC-BE/HC and the long running player most still like to use in VLC.
Running an underperforming system (low memory capacity) those players perform to expectations. Is been my experience anyway.

SMPlayer might be another choice off hand.

Agree with EASTER. I use the portable VLC Media Player, and it's a winner.

You could try the portable SMPlayer to see if it fits your requirements.

    macOS ~ QuickTime

    Ubuntu ~ SMPlayer

I have also VLC installed on both machines.

SMPlayer on both Windows and Linux. The buiult-in downloader of accurate subtitles is just gold.

I tried MPC-BE briefly, but it had problems playing mkv ripped from DVDs (no ads/menus), like Terminator 2, so back to MPC-HC bundled within K-Lite Pack.

    Hi.:)
For example, I can't associate AVI files in a non C: hard drive.
This happened after associating all the multimedia files in the settings.
    SMPlayer only plays audio.

With Potplayer the associations are automatic during installation.

Yeah, more or less. It isn't my default on Mac or Ubuntu but I like to have on the computer.

MPC HC that comes with K-lite. Best for subtitle downloads.

SMPlayer all the way. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, just enable CUDA and you've got hardware acceleration on par with any paid/mainstream software. The image and audio quality is great too.

I have used it as default for a long time now.
