I know the tendency here is to test OS's on laptops that are 47 years old and held together with bubble gum and masking tape [ ] but it's a shame we never see reviews on desk machines that run first class equipment [NVMe m2, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, etc]. I'm sure there are quite a few members [and many more lurkers] that would be very interested. Nevertheless, I never miss any of your articles - another great job - thanks.
Mrk, Interesting articles. I also have a 10 year old EeePC Netbook which gets a few hours use per year. It contains WinXP, Win7, Win10, Mint Cinnamon, Mint xfce, Ubuntu and MX Linux. There was nothing scientific about my tests as I mainly checked boot time and internet performance. Win10 was moribund as the CPU ran at 99% most of the time. I didn't notice a significant difference between the Linux OS. By far the fastest OS was WinXP, even to the extent that I'd be happy to travel with this netbook to surf the net and use email. I was surprised how well WinXP performed.
XP performance was phenomenal, although after the SP's were installed, it's performance degraded considerably. Did you test XP with its latest SP3?
Yes, it was SP3. Edit... I copied several OS onto a SSD but the performance improvement was barely noticeable.
On this netbook, the original Win7 Starter felt slower and less responsive than Linux way back when. Never tried xp on it. Mrk
Asus's EeePCs originally came with Linux, rather than Windows. But when netbooks became popular they started shipping with Windows instead. This is from an article at Linux Journal. I should have edited that line before posting. My intended phrase was "test OS's for laptops that are 47 years old ". @roger_m said it all with "the underpowered Atom CPUs are not really suited to running any Windows OS other than XP" My wish still remains the same - we never see reviews on desk machines that are running latest release hardware.
Same here. I have the Acer Aspire One 521 which has similar specs and it was unusable with Win7. MX confirms to be a great distro, either for old and new powerful machines (I am using it on my Asus with i7-7700HQ and 16GB RAM).
I copied the Win10 partition and booted the copy. Win10 1903 was installed from "Insiders". It runs better than 1809 on the netbook as the CPU isn't on 99% most of the time. 1809 is moribund and 1903 is slow.
