The Mt. Gox case could be close to concluding one of the most significant stages of a 5-year odyssey. According to Channel News Asia, the Japanese court in charge of the trial is expected to issue a verdict on Karpeles’ innocence or guilt this Friday.

Karpeles faces up to 10 years on charges of faking digital data and embezzling millions of dollars. In case of being found guilty, it is very probable that this Friday we all learn about the penalty that awaits him.
During the entire trial Mark Karpeles, 33, has pleaded not guilty. Statements collected by the media during the trial portray a Karpeles convinced of his innocence but aware of the difficulty of proving it.

The situation is quite complex for Karpeles: Not only was it virtually impossible for him to present the evidence necessary to clean his image of any doubt, but there is also a “tradition” in the Japanese courts of having a high conviction rate (some speak of a 99% chance of being found guilty).
This being the most likely scenario, the defense is expected to appeal the verdict.

Police in Australia have arrested a man who allegedly made AU $300,000 (US $211,000) running a website which sold the account passwords of popular online subscription services including Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, PSN, and Origin.

The 21-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in Sydney, Australia, following an international investigation by the FBI and the Australian Federal Police into the website WickedGen.com.
AFP officers searched the arrested man’s property close to Dee Why beach in Northern Sydney, seizing computer equipment and “various amounts of cryptocurrencies” according to a police statement.

A Sydney man who boasted he was “in a process to not work for $Money$ but to make $Money$ work for me” on his Facebook page — has been charged over his alleged role in organised identity theft and fraud syndicate.

NSW Police allege the syndicate, operating out of western Sydney, used “phone porting” to take over up to 70 bank accounts and took $100,000 between February and September 2018.
Shalin Patel, 22, who shared a video called “Your Job is a Waste of Your Life” on his Facebook page last year, was arrested at his Doonside home for his alleged role in the syndicate.

“Organised criminals seek to exploit vulnerabilities in systems for a financial advantage, and phone porting is an easily avoidable issue that enables broader criminal enterprise,” Supt Craft said.

A Japanese 18-year-old from Utsunomiya, Tochigi, faces criminal charges for stealing $130,000 (around ¥15 million) worth of cryptocurrency after hacking the Monappy social media network and Monacoin web-based wallet.

As reported by Japan Today and multiple other local news outlets [1, 2, 3, 4], he stole 93078.7316 Monacoins from 7735 Monappy users between August 14 and September 1, using a smartphone and Tor in an unsuccessful attempt to stay anonymous seeing that Japanese police managed to find him after analyzing the logs provided by the hacked cryptocurrency platform.

Also, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department says that this is the first ever case in Japan in which someone is facing criminal charges for being behind a cryptocurrency-related hacking incident.

Speaking in a court in the Hague, the Netherlands earlier this month, a 20-year-old man showed remorse in court, admitted to his crimes, which he committed as a minor, and apologized for his actions.

The hacker received 120 hours of community support and 377 days of juvenile detention. He didn't get any prison time as a part of his sentence was considered time spent and was set free on a 360-day conditional release pursuant he not break any other laws.

According to heavily redacted court documents obtained by ZDNet, the hacker managed a DDoS botnet that he built using the Mirai IoT malware. Estimates on the size of the botnets ranged from 2,697 bots (court docs) to 10,000 bots (social media).

An 18-year-old man was denied bail at a court in New Zealand on Monday after he was charged with distributing a live stream of the mass shooting last week, the New Zealand Herald reported.

He faces charges of sharing the gunman's live stream and posting a photograph of one of the mosques attacked with the message "target acquired," along with other chat messages "inciting extreme violence," the Herald reported.
His request for bail was refused, but the judge granted him name suppression. He is due back in court next month.
'Classed as objectionable'
"The footage related to the attack has been classed as objectionable, so it is an offence under New Zealand law to possess, share, and/or host it," said Sarah Stuart-Black, director of New Zealand's Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management.

A Lithuanian man admitted today to defrauding Google and Facebook out of $123 million by using fake invoices to trick employees into wiring money to his bank accounts.

The man, Evaldas Rimasauskas, 50, pleaded guilty today in a New York court and now faces a sentence of up to 30 years in prison for his crimes.

According to court documents, Rimasauskas operated by sending emails made to look like they were coming from Quanta to both Google and Facebook, and demanding payment for alleged services and products.
He used fake invoices, contracts, and letters that fooled Google and Facebook employees into sending requested payments to the bank accounts provided by Rimasauskas, located at banks in Latvia and Cyprus.

A 13-year-old student at the Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys is under investigation after he reportedly used a teacher's credentials to get into the district's system, created a website with information about his fellow students, and made threats.

Columbus Police say they received a report on March 15th that the student had hacked into his teacher's work account and created a site with a "hit-list" of names, school ID numbers, and dates of births. Columbus City Schools says the student copied information of about 60 students who are connected to the school, and then pasted that information to a site titled "User Names and Passes for Columbus Schools."

District officials say when asked why he did it, the "student used some threatening words" and they then contacted police. According to the police report, the boy reportedly told another student that he wanted to shoot up the houses of the kids on his list.

An employee-from-hell has been jailed after he got fired (after a measly four weeks), ripped off a former colleague’s login, steamrolled through his former employer’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) accounts, and torched 23 servers.

The UK’s Thames Valley Police announced on Monday that 36-year-old Steffan Needham, of Bury, Greater Manchester, was jailed for two years at Reading Crown Court following a nine-day trial.
As the Mirror reported during Needham’s January trial, the IT worker was sacked after a month of lousy performance working at a digital marketing and software company called Voova in 2016.

In the days after he got fired, Needham got busy: he used the stolen login credentials to get into the computer account of a former colleague – Andy “Speedy” Gonzalez – and then began fiddling with the account settings. Next, he began deleting Voova’s AWS servers.

A man has been arrested after paying a computer hacker to target a University of Central Florida student's Snapchat account and extort her for nude photos, according to the UCF Police Department.

John Thompson in May 2018 paid a computer hacker he found through the website 4chan to target his ex-girlfriend's sister's account in order to obtain nude pictures and videos, police said.
Thompson supplied the hacker with the victim's name, birthday, phone number and username, according to officials.

The victim called the hacker, who demanded that she send sexual images and videos in order to get her login information back. Police said the hacker then threatened to post all of the nude images and videos stored on her account to the internet if she called the police.

Thompson is charged with two counts of extortion, offenses against users of computers, sexual cyber harassment and stalking (cyberstalking), police said.
He was booked into the Orange County Jail Wednesday and has since been released.

Illawarra-based security researcher Nikola Cubrilovic has pleaded guilty to charges related to unauthorised access to the GoGet service and will be sentenced in May.

“On 27 June 2017, GoGet’s IT team identified suspected unauthorised activity on its system and a full internal investigation was immediately commenced,” GoGet’s CEO at the time, Tristan Sender, said in a statement released in January 2018.
In total, Cubrilovic faced 39 charges including dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage, dealing with identity information to commit an indictable offence, and taking and driving a vehicle without the consent of its owner.

The researcher had been due to face trial this week but changed his plea earlier this month.

French authorities have arrested five men who stole over 120,000 litres (26,400 gallons) of fuel from gas stations around Paris by unlocking gas pumps using a special remote.

The hack was possible because some gas station managers didn't change the gas pump's default lock code from the standard 0000. Hackers would use this simple PIN code to reset fuel prices and remove any fill-up limits.
Crooks would operate in small teams of two to three individuals who visited gas stations at night using two vehicles

Authorities said the group made around €150,000 ($168,000) from selling the stolen fuel at a reduced price.

A Dacula, Georgia, resident had pled guilty to one count of computer fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft in a hacking scheme where he stole credit card information from the Apple accounts of big-name rappers and NBA and NFL players.

Kwamaine Jerell Ford, 27, employed thousands of phishing emails targeting college and professional athletes and rapper musicians in which he spoofed legitimate Apple customer service email accounts, according to the US Department of Justice. He posed as an Apple customer support representative asking the targets to send their usernames and passwords or other account security information to reset their Apple accounts.
