The downsides of buying a new Mac

This is a rather silly reductio ad absurdum to be honest.

The fact is that Apple manufactures its own hardware as far as I know. I'm guessing this has to do with their market pricing.

My iMac cost me about the same as an equivalent PC tower and monitor cost. I don't really care about their other products.

Anyway, a few weeks ago I decided to replace my old desktop computer that ran Win 7. Because of some borking by Microsoft I couldn't properly update it for over a year. This made it a security hazard even though technically Win 7 was still supported. As M$ wouldn't or couldn't fix this problem I had no real alternative but to buy a new desktop computer. As I could buy a brand new iMac for more or less the same as an equivalent machine running Windows, I went for the Mac. For me it was a no-brainer. A PC with Ubuntu preinstalled wasn't an option either as I wasn't too sure about hardware compatibility.

So, again, there were no downsides for me buying a new iMac.

It's still great (with no downsides).

 

Huh? PLEASE!!!! As requested above, do just a little homework before posting, okay?

Are "Intel" processors made by Apple? How about "AMD Radeon" graphics? How about the "Foxconn" motherboards? "Micron" RAM? "Toshiba/OCZ" SSDs?

That said, while much of the hardware manufacturing is outsourced, that does not mean it was not designed and/or the design modified by Apple to be proprietary, and therefore more expensive.

Show us where I used my hardware as evidence.

I think you're just splitting hairs now Bill. It's almost as if you're an MS MVP or something. Are you sure you have no vested interest in promoting MS? My iMac's still great by the way, and I'm glad I switched from Windows.

 

Althought I don't agree everything Bill says (or how) , I have to agree that nowadays Apple is a greedy pig and
there is visible Apple tax in their products (even the passed away founder criticized that his company had got greedy for profit).

Splitting hairs? Hardly. You said Apple makes their own hardware. Fact is, at least for their computers and notebooks, they make very little of it.

This has now digressed to the point of ignorance. Read back through this thread. No where did I "promote" anything. It is you continually trying to sell us on Apple. As a former MVP, I do not and never have had any interest in promoting MS. Pretty sure MS would not appreciate me bashing the executives and marketing "weenies" as I did above and many times while an MVP.

The fact is, I'm an electronics technician having spent most of my career maintaining and repairing air traffic control radio communications equipment. In other words, a hardware guy.

Note you are the only one here who has claimed Apple is better.

Just out of curiosity I went to the site of the local Apple retailer to check the prices and specs of the iMacs and... gasp

the cheapest iMac costs €1349 and it offers the following:
i5 dual core 2,3 GHz (yes, serious)
integrated graphics (yes, serious)
1 TB 5400 rpm HDD (yes, trust me)
8 GB DDR4 2133 MHz
wireless mouse and mini keyboard
21,5 inches 1920x1080 monitor

For €1263 my local PC shop will build, test and ship me the following:
i5 six core 3.0 GHz
Nvidia 1060 GTX
240 GB SSD
16 GB 2666 MHz
wireless mouse and full sized keyboard
23,8 inches 1920x1080 monitor

There's enough left to buy a Win 10 key, or just install Ubuntu.
Do I have to go through the advantages of a proper desktop PC over those abnormalities called all-in-one like the iMac?

 

I thought you'd moved on a while ago. I think Apple is better, yes. I claim it as that's my experience. My favourite OS is Ubuntu, which I also believe is better than Windows.

I think you summarized it pretty well brother! While I prefer Windows over MacOS every day of the week, it's laughable that we have like 10 versions of Windows.

Windows 10
Windows 10 Pro
Windows 10 Enterprise
Windows 10 Education
Windows 10 Pro for business
...etc

All just to earn more money. When, IMO, Windows 10 Pro as the basic edition and Enterprise for businesses should suffice.

The cost of upgrading an iMac on the Apple Store speaks wonders of the greed of Apple, though.

 

Greed definitely runs the corporate world! My ISP (British Telecom) tries to regularly convince me I have the fastest and cheapest broadband in the world. I don't believe them. lol

 

An enormous amount of hard work, sweat and labor went into designing that apple-y logo and the snob appeal behind it. Does that not justify anything?

 

Have you tried Linux Mint recently? I have had a better experience with it as of late.

I think the original point of this thread was that Apple is expensive. There is no question of that. The debate seems to be if one considers it worth the expense. We have folks on both sides. Let's call it that.

- wireless, 4G 50 Mbps for 14,90 euros/month (about $17/month)
- wired, fiber 1 Gbps for 54,90 euros/month (about $70/month)

This in a suburb of a small city in my country.

I've never run Mint. It's certainly prettier than Ubuntu. I'm not denying a lot of Apple stuff is expensive. I just wanted a new desktop that wasn't Windows. There were limited options. The option I chose wasn't ridiculously expensive for me and does everything I want it to. I used a Mac before I ever used Windows. When I first used Windows I thought it would eventually improve and be as good as Mac lol. I liked Win 7. I didn't want Win 10.

 

Before getting my iMac I had second thoughts on getting one because of the price. Meeting two Military friends that worked at Apple and This Discount that I got from Apple has changed my mind about purchasing an iMac. I'm not a now-a-day gamer my reaction time is slow from age. Games I'll play Mahjong, Cribbage, Solitaire, Bejeweled. I guess you get what I'm talking about, those "Old Fogy" games. Now that I have owned a iMac for a few years, would I get another and pay "Full Price" for one? The answer to that is YES I would. The 27 inch Retina 5k screen is very easy on the eyes for computer work and watching movies from YouTube and Verizon Fios movies. There is just too much BS one has to put up with on a Windows computer. One major headache is the monthly updates, crossing your fingers and toes that all works out good after the update. I guess you can say the BS of Microsoft trying to force me by conniving me into upgrading to Windows 10 and my two buddies at Apple have turned me into a believer of the iMac.

 

Problems with Windows for Average Joe, too many maintenance and issues.
One reason why many shifted to tablets when they became popular and cheap.

Honestly, I'm a long time user of Windows, liked it a lot, now extremely disappointed by it, i'm also using Linux, it is ok, but guess what may be my next machine?
A Chromebook, why? Because it does all i need without an inch of hassle and i know Google to prioritize security and convenience, unlike MS.

Average Joe doesn't need Windows.

 

I seriously considered an Asus Chromebox for a while. I've used Ubuntu for years and my next laptop will almost certainly run it. I have a Chromebook, it's simplicity itself and pretty soon Linux apps should be able to run on ChromeOS. Like I said at the beginning of this thread; they're all better than Windows IMO. I was also tired of the MS BS. I started the 'Bork Tuesday' thread in 2014 because I was so concerned about the monthly updates fiasco. The Win 10 attempted forced upgrading was almost the final straw. The actual straw that broke the camel's back was when MS kept changing my updating from being manual. I thought I was imagining things and it was me that had changed the updating settings on my own computer. Eventually I couldn't even actually update the computer. I'll never buy MS software again. I'm also a believer of the iMac. Even if it does beat me a lot at chess lol.

For the price of an Apple high end laptop I can easily buy two Windows laptops with similar hardware, it makes a lot of sense to buy a Window machine. I don't particularly like the analogy with cars, a Ferrari is a fast car, a Mac is not faster than a Window machine Now if one hates Windows 10, it's a different matter, I personally think Windows 10 is the best OS ever, and besides, as of January 19, it is now running on more than 700 million devices.
