Either way, I'd rather have a Ferrari than a Vauxhall.

LOL - me too - but then I base that only on my Vauxhall driving experience I had way back in the 80s when I was stationed in England. Vauxhalls/Opels are not sold in the US. I have never driven a newer one. That said, I have never driven a Ferrari so I guess I have no room to talk either way. ;)

As for me there is no "Downside for buying a new Mac" since I bought it at a heavy discount. I always wanted a Mac computer in my lifetime. Since my lifetime grows short I'm glad I was in the right place at the right time to buy. Fast reboot, don't have to buy (but I did, MBAM) security software yearly. That may change in the later years when malware picks up on Mac computers. NO Patch Tuesday's to put the screws to the computer, Thank God. Don't have to worry about M$ subscriptions to Win 10 down the road or M$ Office subscriptions (and patches). I'm very happy with my Mac but there will be people that dislike the "Forbidden Fruit". :D

@Daveski17 some good tutorials on the Mac:

They've probably improved since the 80's. Everything else has.

@Bill_Bright yes I agree too, luxury isn't based on better components but better design/finishing.
A military suit is way more solid/practical than a 1000$ one, but wearing it in the Queen birthday party won't be appreciated at all lol

Personally if I had the money to buy a Ferrari I won't do it, I rather spend it on a tuned Nissan Skyline a la "Fast & Furious".

I tried a Mac once, I admit it was snappy.
I felt that the main difference between Mac and pc is that on Mac the hardware is optimized for the OS. While in Windows it is the opposite, the OS follow the hardware

Not everything has improved since the 80's, but I won't go OT.

Well, probably not everything. I just can't think of anything.

I really don't want to go OT, but one thing - privacy. In my country we didn't even have photo licenses back then. There are plenty of other things I can think of too.

I can't remember that far back anyway lol. I think the music of the 80's was better than now, not as good as the 90's though. Computers now are better than those in the 80's.

Not sure I would agree with that - if authorized to wear that uniform and it is worn properly and if appropriate for the occasion. Being retired military, I happen to think formal "dress" uniforms look pretty sharp, respective and are indeed, appreciated - and would be when celebrating the birthday of a head of state, as the Queen surely is.

I am afraid you picked the wrong analogy. ;)

That said, if I had the money, I would not buy a Ferrari either. Besides the fact the closest dealer (and authorized mechanic) is nearly 500 miles away from my house, I think there are other cars that would be more fun to drive.

Thanks for a good laugh everyone. I've used Windows 10 since two months after it came out and I'm more than pleased. For some reason, some people want to make it sound like my experience is unique and that Windows is completely unusable even though it has like an 88% market share on desktop computers.

I have a Macbook myself, it's old as hell but is still running even though its a Unibody 2010 model. I have to say, I'm not particularly impressed by MacOS. I just don't see the great advantages over Windows 10 that everyone else seems to be seeing.

    I don't see any.
When it comes to usability a graphical OS is just like any other.
When it comes to privacy I don't see why Apple should be more trustworthy than Microsoft.
When it comes to games Macs are as limited as Linux (or close) and hardware performance is poor.
When it comes to software in general both Windows and Linux are superior.
Oh and there's price to consider...

My iMac can run virtually anything that I could run on Win7. If it can't run it there is an equivalent. I can run programs that are important to me on Mac; predominantly astronomy software. 'Starry Night 7 Enthusiast' runs as well, if not better on macOS than Windows 7. AFAIK there is no 'SkySafari 6 Pro' for Windows (probably the most popular amateur astronomy virtual planetarium and GOTO telescope controller). I've run SkySafari for a long time on Chrome/Android so it was nice to be able to have it on my desktop. There are other very useful programs for amateur astronomers like Moon Atlas and Mars Atlas that are deliberately coded for macOS. VLC runs on macOS, although QuickTime is my most used media player. QuickTime has always been able to play anything in my experience (even on Windows at one time). That's more than can be said for Windows Media Player, which in my experience couldn't play anything. I can run Google Earth (which has always had problems on Linux). There just is no downside to macOS for me, in fact, it's all upside.

Yeah, the combat uniform probably would not be appropriate for the Queen's birthday celebration - at least not at Buckingham Palace! ;)
Yeah, I am not buying this statement at all. There are just way too many variables for that to be a valid statement.

Windows and macOS/OS X are different operating systems. Therefore, the programs are coded differently, and optimized for each specific OS. If a task performs better on one, that could easily be due to poor quality program coding in one version compared to the other and have nothing to do with the actual OS's capabilities.

Graphics heavy programs depend on the hardware capabilities just as much, if not more so than the OS. Even if the hardware (including CPUs, bus speeds, RAM and graphics solutions) are 100% identical (which is highly unlikely) the various devices would require drivers specific for each OS. And there is nothing to suggest those drivers were optimized for any specific program, or equally for each OS.

So sorry, but that statement is just a biased opinion not based in verifiable fact.

I'm not selling it, it's just my subjective experience. It's a valid statement for me. Either way, SN7 performs much better on my iMac than it did on my custom built box running Win 7. Perhaps I should have qualified the statement with 'for me' or 'in my experience' at the beginning of the sentence, for all the nitpickers in cyberspace.

Although, right at the beginning of what I wrote did start with "My iMac".

So yes, all totally subjective. And in my subjective experience my iMac runs everything better than my old Win 7 box, whatever the reason. So again, in response to the original post, there are no downsides for running a Mac for me, only upsides.

    Same here, no downsides. :thumb:
I believe in a few months after all my files are transferred from M$ Office to iWorks I'll be removing M$ Office for good with sudo commands. Then I'll be Microsoft Free on the Mac. I was working on transferring hundreds of all my files and almost done. If I need a Microsoft document the Mac can make one from iWorks. Truthfully I thought I would never like a Mac, even when I bought this one with a discount. Took awhile to get use to but after the learning curve I'm sold on it.:D

I've used Mac's in the past and run Ubuntu for years, so it wasn't a difficult transition for me. I always thought Mac was a better OS than Windows. I stopped using M$ Office many years ago and mainly used Open Office. I use LibO on macOS (and Ubuntu) now, which can also open AbiWord files.

I'm finally M$ free and loving every minute of it. :thumb:

That's fine but come on! W7 is over 10 years old. Mainstream support ended over 4 years ago. Extended support ends in less than a year. And W7 has been superseded twice already (3 times if you count W8.1). And you are still making claims as though they are valid for today with today's current hardware and Microsoft's current version of Windows.
You are not selling it, but you sure are trying too. :( And whether you see it and accept it or not, your clear biases show through and therefore, tarnish your comments to the point of invalidating them. For example, your continued use of disparaging "M$" instead of MS even though I already showed us way back in Post #2 where Apple is much more "money hungry" than MS.

To be sure, you are entitled to your opinion and I will defend your right to express it. But please stop trying to sell it with outdated, obsolete, superseded facts, unequal comparisons, and biased opinions. And note again, I also said in Post #2 above that Apple makes "great stuff".

Win 7 was still being supported supposedly when I discovered I couldn't update it. It was still a valid and current OS, regardless of its chronological age, and M$ had a responsibility to support their customers. They failed me and many others. It's irrelevant that other M$ OS's were released. They ended up losing me as a customer entirely. Well done M$!

My bias is that I prefer macOS and Ubuntu to Windows. I always have, there are a lot of reasons for this. In my opinion Unix type operating systems are just easier to use and have better security. If it appears to you that I'm trying to sell something this has more to do with your own subjective perspective than anything else. It tells me that you seem desperate to defend Micro$oft in some way. I'm guessing you have some deep personal need for this. Sadly, I can't help you with this affliction.

No Bill, you actually didn't. You expressed an opinion on Apple pricing. It didn't empirically prove that Apple as a corporation are 'more greedy' than anyone else. I don't work for Apple so I don't know how they work out their costs. If anything some of their products have become less expensive over time. I'm sure they try to be as competitive as they can and still make a profit and they have certain overhead and manufacturing costs. To claim one large corporation is more greedy or less greedy than another large corporation is a bit absurd.

I don't know about all Apple stuff. I just know about my iMac, which is far superior to my old Win 7 box, in my subjective opinion.

Oh yeah, and here's a screenshot of my iMac, as I'm running QuickTime, and pondering the upsides and definitely no downsides of using my iMac.

I did. How do you think Apple got into the top ten list of richest companies in the world? By selling products and services at discounted, no-profit prices?

It's not an opinion. It is just a fact. Apple products cost more than competing products. That's just a fact that is easily confirmed by visiting any Apple and Windows computer store. Pick one of each with the same i5 or i7, same amount of RAM, same GPU, same drive and see for yourself which costs substantially more.

When you sell some of the priciest proprietary computers and smartphones on the market and become one of the top ten richest companies in the world, it is not because your prices were consumer friendly.

Look, I am glad you like your Mac. I NEVER said they were bad. You are just trying to rationalize their high prices, and you paying for them, with invalid assertions. And you are trying to convince (sell to) everyone else here those prices and your decision are just. Like above, I'm not buying that at all.

FTR, I am NOT saying you made a bad choice either. If someone works hard, there is nothing wrong with splurging and spending more on something they want just because they want it. I have a bigger and nicer OLED TV than I need. But I paid extra for it because I wanted it. And I am glad I did because I like it and I enjoy it. I paid extra for a higher trim level on my truck. It didn't make the truck a better truck. But I like it.

I am also glad and appreciate that you have now admitted your statements are based on your own personal opinions based on your PC and your iMac. I am just asking before you try to convince others your sample-size-of-one experience renders moot the whole point, take just a moment and do some homework by running a Google search.

    Anecdotal evidence is not evidence.

Now I think any further debate is just kicking a dead horse and my ingrown toenail already hurts.

A Mac is like an $800 pair of shoes. If you must have it, do so. You don't have to justify it to anyone else, despite the fact that it is not practical in most cases. It's not for me, but if you can afford it and you want it, get it. I'd rather get something cheap and spend the money elsewhere.
