I'm hitting a "Software Export Compliance Form" to fill out when attempting a direct download from the downloads page. https://www.hitmanpro.com/en-us/downloads.aspx

Never saw this before. It appears after submitting the agreement to the end user license agreement on the website.

Yes, I don't like it. I noticed when trying to download HMP 3.8.10.298 from the downloads page, February 28.
Instead, I downloaded using the "FREE 30-Day Trial" button on the main HMP page, which offers the http://get.hitmanpro.com/ URL. (N.B. a https version of that URL doesn't work!)

    Don't worry, that's OK.
You gave the main HMP page URL, that may be helpful. :thumb:

HMP.Alert has real-time protection. HMP doesn't. Since I use OSArmor & image 3X/week, I do not need a patrolling AV. Ergo, HMP-on-demand is perfecto for me.

Just in case a nerwbie is reading this, let's be clear with this fact: HitmanPro is NOT an AV!

So that's fine if you have that security protection covered elsewhere, but many folks may read this thread and not understand the differences.

I am a big fan of HMPA & HMP covering my ***, but as a layer on top of my other malware defenses, not instead of them.

Ah, the view from Mt. Olympus must be splendid this time of year.

The "A" in "AV" stands for "Anti" & the "V" stands for "Virus". However, nowadays the so-called AVs are NOT merely doing Anti-Virus work but are perhaps more properly referred to as doing Anti-Malware work. However, the misnomer "AV" has become the generally accepted epithet for the genre of software that defends against malware through a combination of signatures, sandboxes, behavior blockers, HIPS, white-listing, etc. Of course, any given AV does not necessarily employ all these methods. Each AV has its own selected set of methods.

If the epithet "AV" is inaccurate for HMP, then it is equally inaccurate for Kaspersky, Avast, Avira, et alia. Good grief! If someone wants to initiate a discussion of what is or is not an AV, it would be best to either do a more thorough job, or else start one's own thread, or (best) not engage in pedantic hair-splitting in the first place.

HMP seeks to detect the same malware as other so-called AVs. The main difference is in the timing. The real-time AVs seek to pre-detect/prevent infections, whereas the user-initiated HMP seeks to post-detect infections. If one routinely images, & uses OSA to pre-detect/prevent, & uses HMP to post-detect, then a patrolling AV is NOT *essential* for effective security.

    @bellgamin ,

My friend, I almost always agree with most of your posts but in this case, my understanding of an AV (antivirus) is a program that runs in real-time. I agree that HMP does search for the same kinds of malware a real-time scanner would, and in some cases even more so. Many don't look for tracking cookies for example. That said, Personally, I could not say HMP is an AV as much as I love the program and its big sister HMP.A. I would rather suggest it be known as an on-demand scanner.

There is no such things as "AV" those days, they are all anti-malware.

The old differentiation between AV and AM is obsolete and kept just because Average Joe only knows it or some companies keep using either of the term for marketing purposes.

Then you have real-time or on-demand scanners, which are components of a product.

    HMP is an 2nd opinion on-demand anti-malware.

Hola Krusty & guest. As usual, you are 100% spot-on. Even so, Juliet just whispered in my ear: ""What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Romeo & Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)

My outfit's security system relies primarily on on-demand file integrity checks, encryption, on-demand detection, & easy recovery via imaging. In that system, OSA + HMP have displaced any & all real-time AVs.

My post #8190 made the point that patrolling/real-time AVs are no longer relevant with the availability of imaging, OSA, et alia. In effect, Tinstaafl's post #8191 was a pontifical defense of the great huge wall of security that self-anointed gurus seem to be rutted into nowadays. Just look at the array of security gadgets in Tinstaafl's signature: Avira Pro; HMP.Alert 775; GlassWire Pro 2.1.140; MBAM Free; Emsi EEK; AdwCleaner etc!!! Good grief! I would hate to see Tinstaafl's unnamed "newbie" be saddled with all that stuff -- he even has poor struggling MBAM in his assortment.

IMO, engorging one's computer with massive arrays of security is nonsensical in light of the advent of (a) many low-cost, efficient, simple imaging programs, such as Macrium, coupled with (b) dirt-cheap mega storage, coupled with (c) new-tech security such as OSA & ERP & APPGuard.

Since you took the time to analyze my signature :geek:, I would like to point out that Avira and HMPA are the only real-time anti-malware defenses in that list. And as far as I can tell, they have no significant impact on my system performance. The rest of that list contains just on-demand, second opinion scanners. I feel no obligation to defend my choices that you have belittled. I have NEVER had a malware infection while using them, so I am quite satisfied with my selections.

And don't just assume that you know everything about my system or security practices, based on what I post here or place in my signature. I run a daily FULL system image with Macrium, so my anti-malware is just an alert system for me to know when to do a restore back to a "safe" image if the need ever arises. Plus I check EVERYTHING (downloaded executable files) with VirusTotal before they ever get installed on my hard drive.

There is no pain to use 100 on-demand scanners especially if they are portable.
Just don't stockpile redundant real-time apps when the OS itself has some similar built-in mechanisms.

Use what is convenient and what you can handle. Don't follow the hype.
Better use a less powerful software where you know all aspects than using a reputed uber powerful one you don't have any clue how to tighten it.

Win10 offers enough protection by itself against conventional threats, which are mostly what normal users will face.
The security industry thrives on the user paranoia and even push it to sell.

Now for the security geeks, there is no limits to the paranoia they show. Just read the various "this is my setup" kind of thread.

HMP products are very good tools, are they efficient? Sure.
Are they necessary to Average Joe? I don't think so.

People should learn security instead of adding more and more tools.

Sounds like you have a good set-up. However, the routine pre-checks by VT strike me as being somewhat like chemo-therapy -- the cure might be as bad or worse than the disease. :isay:

Hey, Tinstaafl, please post more often. This thread really lit up when you posted. Good discussions ensued, including 2 of my favs: guest & Krusty.

    Grace & peace to all.

To make a long story short:
Drive by download = The answer to the on-demand only users.

Got infected last January. It was symptomless. My On-demand File Integrity Checker detected an anomaly. I restored a clean image. NP.

Anon -- there's way more than 1 kind of on-demand security app.
