    Well, isn't that such an unfortunate coincidence? VMware, the competitor to Microsoft's own Hyper-V, is unable to install insider builds, and Microsoft suggests using Hyper-V, obviously a complete coincidence...

    I managed to obtain secret code from microsoft's insider builds, never shared before:

    if (userID % 10 == 0) {
    breakVMware();
    }

    (% means modulo division)

    I've restored each "Insider" image. No problems.

    That was actually my laptop with the released build. I don't do Insider builds on it. I don't start putting Insider builds on real PCs until they hit the point of having the watermark removed. At that point they are usually as good as they are going to get.

    That is a concern. Restores should never fail.

    Looks like Microsoft listened to all the Win 10 update complaints:

    Agreed, but that is an issue for another thread. I will post there if it happens again.

    In any case I got the latest Insider preview to finish in VMWare by adding the following lines to the end of the config file in the virtual machine folder as found by googling the issue:
    cpuid.brandstring = "VMware Fix for Windows 10 Build 18346 x64"
    cpuid.1.ecx = "0--------------0----------------"
    cpuid.1.edx = "-----------0---------0----------"
    monitor_control.enable_fullcpuid = "TRUE""

    I also see there is a new build of VMWare just released. I don't know if it addresses this issue or not.
    ---Apparently it does not address this issue. I took the lines out and it did not boot. Put them back again and it was fine.
