This is what the new Chromium-based Edge looks like

It doesn't seem like a bad idea that Microsoft is going to stop trying to reinvent the wheel with the Edge browser.

 

Dang and I was actually liking the browser of late. Still, the switch is understandable as the browser can be updated independently of the operating system. Not an extension-o-holic but I bet that'll be a big plus to many. Those screenshots aren't very pretty but maybe you can customize the appearance more also. Looking forward to trying it.

Nope, it's not just you. Still using Firefox here. As bad as Edge was, I expect it is about to get worse.

Interesting that they have 'ungoogled' it but no mention of what they replaced those services with - likely it's been 'Bing'ed.

They have the muscle to keep it ungoogled and updated though being tracked by MS isn't likely any better.

I wonder if it would be easier to 'un Bing' their chromium v ungoogling Chromium?

 

They could have just tried to get Chrome and Firefox included with Windows, but they would have had to work out an agreement with Google and Mozilla lol.

 

I'm still surprised they are doing a Windows 7 version as it has 6 months to live. And this isn't ready yet. Is it going to get 90 days of official support?

I doubt many will legitimately pay for extended support, especially individuals. Fair enough, there will be a few enterprise users, but for the average consumer, it is a dead product.

Good point; I was just reading about ad blocking extensions being disabled at some point. I guess we won't know the extent of it until Google makes the changes.

 

Yeah, but I'm fairly certain these changes won't be the last of this. I'm also pretty certain it's not just Google behind this and there are many parties looking for an opportunity to cripple adblocking. With Blink being so ubiquitous there aren't that many alternatives. I run Safari and Firefox on my Mac, and Firefox is the default browser on my laptop running Linux, so it won't really affect me so much. I've swapped Opera for Chrome as my back-up browser on Ubuntu as it does have its own configurable adblocker. I can also probably live with Opera's inability to run flash. I ran Opera (Presto) over ten years ago. I don't think any of its plug-ins worked then either lol. It did have a simple content blocker IIRC.

 

I don't care for the average consumer neither MS is aim for them with this decision to release edge for windows 7. my point still stands, Windows 7 is far from dead.

 

Maybe they will just backport patches from Chromium? Chrome ended support for Windows XP circa 2 years after Microsoft discontinued support for that OS.

 

Far from dead would imply that there is plenty of life left. I'm willing to give you that it is not going to be completely dead, but far from dead is a stretch. I'm sure it will be 95% or more dead when it hits EOL within 6 months. People will use it but shouldn't. It's dead enough that the software company I work for would not go out of its way to develop for it if it required special effort.
