I read this last week when the article was published.

To it I would add something like Autoruns can be quite beneficial. It will show what publisher signed the driver .sys file. If you see a hardware publisher and that hardware is not installed on your PC, it would be something suspicious to investigate further. Additionally if you configured Autoruns to perform VirusTotal scanning, all your driver files will be scanned there with result shown for each file in Autoruns.

 

I was recently looking through autoruns entries, and you know me I like tweaking and turning off stuff I don't need, and since I've already done that for windows services and tasks, what's next? Autoruns entries! I took a quick look and there were some pretty obvious ones to turn off, like these dlls being loaded that are related to printing and printers, which I don't use ofc:



When you uncheck "Hide Windows entries" and Microsoft entries, there are hundreds of drivers dlls etc. loaded, most of which are hard to understand what they are for from first look, but I'm sure at least some of them and perhaps many could be turned off for stuff that isn't needed, I wonder what @TairikuOkami thinks about this

I've tried to update to this build in a VM about 5 times now. Keeps failing. If this is a sign of things to come I will be blocking this when it is released in the next few weeks. You'd think they'd be good at this by now.

 

Can you update a free Enterprise Evaluation Windows 10 VM to an insider build?

 

Possibly but I doubt it. You have to be signed in to a Microsoft account to register it, and if it is an expiring evaluation it will still expire.

Great. The second build in a row I can't install. They're not on a roll for making a better impression than they did with the 1809 release.

 

Microsoft software protection platform service... it has been running at full CPU for the last half hour on my laptop, throttling up the fan and slowing things down. I assume that by "software protection" this is a licensing service. It's making Linux Mint look really appealing right now. If I could find a suitable Outlook replacement I would likely make the jump.

Yep. Turns out it is actually an Office issue. It said there was an update available. It refused to install. I proceeded to uninstall Office, it would not. I used their online tool. Now to reinstall. It hangs at 94% with the same stupid service hanging and throttling my CPU. If I can't find a resolution I'll be cancelling my 365 subscription, I'm tired of the Gross incompetence they are currently demonstrating.
