The message from the UK's cyber spies – and perhaps more importantly cyber-spy hunters– was polite, and measured, but also clear. When it comes to 5G and Huawei, we've got it covered.

The UK has long taken a different path to the US in its attitude towards Huawei. The company's hardware has been used in UK telecoms networks for many years, long before 5G was even thought about.
NCSC's point is that there is a lot more to security than just where the kit comes from. Telecoms security in general needs to be a lot tighter. As Levy points out: "If your passwords are all system defaults, it doesn't matter whose kit you use, you're stuffed."

Yes, 5G is coming, but it’s definitely not here yet. Brazilian carrier Claro seems to by trying to get around that pesky fact with a sneaky “4.5G” marketing campaign that could result in fines for misleading advertising.

The ads gained international attention when they were sent to The Verge last week, and it appears Brazilian officials have taken notice.
Procon-SP, São Paulo’s state consumer protection agency, told Brazilian news outlet Canaltech this week that at least one consumer has already complained about Claro’s 4.5G service, believing it to be proper 5G

It’s troubling that this sort of misleading 5G marketing isn’t isolated to one carrier or country. AT&T’s 5GE branding is bad, Claro’s 4.5 ads are also bad, and Hong Kong carrier SmarTone’s 4.5G logo is arguably the worst of them all. It’s going to be a while before real 5G is here in a meaningful capacity. In the meantime, don’t believe the ads you see.

A group of academics have found three new security flaws in 4G and 5G, which they say can be used to intercept phone calls and track the locations of cell phone users.

The findings are said to be the first time vulnerabilities have affected both 4G and the incoming 5G standard, which promises faster speeds and better security, particularly against law enforcement use of cell site simulators, known as “stingrays.”
But the researchers say that their new attacks can defeat newer protections that were believed to make it more difficult to snoop on phone users.

Hussain, along with Ninghui Li and Elisa Bertino at Purdue University, and Mitziu Echeverria and Omar Chowdhury at the University of Iowa are set to reveal their findings at the Network and Distributed System Security Symposium in San Diego on Tuesday.

Helios Towers Plc wants to build 1,000 telecommunication towers in South Africa in the next three years as it tries to capitalize on rapid growth in mobile services and shape up for an initial public offering.

Chief Executive Officer Kash Pandya said Helios will look to acquire more towers from carriers such as MTN Group Ltd. and Vodacom Group Ltd. The country has around 30,000 towers in all, with only about 10 percent of those run by independent companies.

5G is supposed to mark the 5th generation of mobile communication, and with it, tech companies have been making lofty promises about what cell networks could offer in the not-too-distant future. We’re talking about mobile data speeds potentially in excess of one Gbps, latencies of less than five or 10 milliseconds, and networks robust enough to handle the quickly growing number of IoT devices.

The ** over 5G is quite fascinating.

Proponents (read: tech lobbyist working for wireless company X) try to make believe that
having the last mile delivered by wireless (which is always substandard compared to fiber) somehow makes connections faster for everyone (they always "forgot" to mention that 5G needs fiber as backbone to have any chance at all to achieve 1Gpbs speed).

Newsflash: Not going to happen. Maybe in a advanced places like Tokyo or Singapore where fiber is the norm it might be possible to have islands of fast wireless access within city.

But in places like USA (Ranked 20th on global speed) ?

Google Fi customers will get 5G, too – and unsurprisingly, they’ll get it through the service’s existing partnership with Sprint and use the latter’s 5G infrastructure once it’s rolled out, the companies announced in a press release.
As a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Google Fi already leases telecom networks from Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular and Three to provide service to its customers. So it’s not much of a surprise that Fi picked one of those to secure 5G functionality for its customer base.

Per the press release, Sprint’s 5G network is launching in the first half of 2019 and “when this rolls out, Google Fi customers with Sprint 5G compatible 'Designed for Fi' phones in a 5G coverage area will be automatically connected to the network.”
Despite opening Fi up to phones from Apple, Samsung and OnePlus, this means only Designed for Fi phones (seen here) work with Sprint's network. They'll need to be Sprint 5G compatible, too, though it’s unclear what that includes.

Next-generation wireless technology is taking the medical world a crucial step closer to robots performing remotely-controlled surgery, a doctor in Spain said Wednesday after carrying out the world's first 5G-powered telementored operation.
5G greatly reduces latency—the time it takes to get a response to information sent—of wireless networks so images and data is relayed almost instantly.

"This is truly revolutionary and just one of the benefits that 5G will bring us," he added.
During the operation the 5G connection had a lag time of just 0.01 seconds, compared to the 0.27-second latency period with the 4G wireless networks which currently predominate in developing nations.

"If you are going to do remote assisted surgery, you need to be almost there in person. You cannot have more than a couple of milliseconds latency. And that is where 5G technology comes in," GSMA director general Mats Granryd told AFP.

Along the walls at one of Ericsson's demos, the strip was embedded behind a thin piece of wallpaper or hidden by a thin plastic housing. Another strip was laid under a long train of carpet that was rolled up.
"This is how easy your network rollout will be," Pal Frenger, a researcher at Ericsson, said as he placed the roll on the floor and kicked it open.

This little strip could have big implications for how 5G might get deployed.
But the ease with which you could hang up (or roll out) these strips, or even temporarily install them at an outdoor venue, could turbocharge the deployment of 5G by offering better coverage in little corners.
