Apart from applying the patch, XP users would have to disable the SMB protocol.

Never had malware infections on my XP.

 

because you have basic security safe habits (after all you are here), i can't say the same for 99% of the people around me using XP...their machines being a nest of malware.

 

I have seen many malwares infections on XP machines, but on Windows 10 usually is just PUPs.

It doesnt change the fact that Windows 10 is a much safer OS compared to XP and that is the point of the article/topic.

User education is first line of defence against malware, even so Windows 10 machines are reasonable safe in everyone hands

No infections encountered on my friends' Windows XP system either. When XP was discontinued, they said users would get exploited and their system would get compromised. So far I didn't see any mass exploitation happening. I guess that bad guys moved to newer versions of Windows also.

 

I mean, if you sandbox your browser and only run trusted stuff, there's no attack vector as a home user, running XP doesn't change this fact

 

Today's malware is not designed to hit an Operating System such as XP.
That article is full of prejudices.

I certainly do not want to deny that W10 is a more modern and intrinsically safe OS.

 

Well most XP users most likely don't sandbox their browsers. Some of them even use outdated versions but still manage to not get owned.

 

As far as they know. Doubt all malware is going to be in their face.

 

All not, but most of them probably will. But that can be said for any OS.

 

Just like Sampei, never have had any malware infections on my XP machine either.

 

What a load, win10 is the biggest threat to anyone.

 

Notwithstanding XP's own security vulnerabilities, it can't even run the latest, most secure web browsers. I just don't get why anyone would want to continue using XP when they have to utilize all kinds of security augmentations and software which won't even get them somewhat on par with using a modern, updated O/S and software instead.

Most of those doing that is because:
1- having outdated hardware.
2- needing outdated software.
3- diehard fans.

 

Sounds about right. I also wonder if it's some kind of personal challenge to see if they can run XP malware free.

 

Also. To me the only reason I would use XP it is because it was made for old hardware and would run "fast" on modern ones. But In that case, I rather use Linux with xfce-based desktop.

 

xfce is my favorite Linux de, especially on older hardware. I'd rather rather use it over XP any day if I was still using older hardware.

to babbleing here too - i never had any infection on my computers since xp, thas not the point of the news.

Dep of Defense (AE) (Defence is BE) is ditching because the paid support of XP (and also posready) is running out in april 2019. before judging and writing bs some should be aware of this fact. and you could be sure that Dep will get a special prepped windows 10, not the regular.
the other point to mention that almost any serious vendor has dropped xp over a year, even MS. XP is not able to run current runtime libraries which are ofc more safe that the old crap thus the used software is vulnerable from different sites, not only directly. the attack verctors are growing.

keep your xp, but keep it silent and stop trash talk please.

firefox based browsers own their own routines for ssl and other. nevertheless is palemoon based on an outdated gecko engine and thus it is vulnerable. another trash talk. wondering why you dont use Basilisk which should be based on a more modern gecko engine (v55)... as it was hyped as THE browser after firefox legacy and the palemoon successor.
