I still have the Aviation GPS I bought in 1995. I do recall the date issue in 1999. The GPS showed an incorrect date but correct lat/long. I also recall President Clinton turning off Selective Availability, which was used to introduce a 100 metre (variable) error in the calculated position for non military GPS. I turned the old GPS on today and it took 15 minutes to download an Almanac and display a position. Lat/long and time are correct but the displayed date is 30 June 1999.
1PW, An update was never offered. I think every GPS since 1999 will no longer have this bug. This GPS has a slow processor. The displayed position is 6 seconds behind real time. Not an observable problem when you are flying at ten thousand feet but if you are just above the trees you will be 600 metres beyond the waypoint before the GPS announces arrival.
Hello Brian K: I retrieved my Garmin eTrex Vista (circa early 2000s) out of deep storage and installed batteries. Its almanac download took closer to 30 min. and needed extra time to reacquire. Its installed software needs a v3.70 > v3.80 ( March 18, 2008 ) update but its date did display 13-FEB-19 (okay). So I still need to verify the situation called out in mood's original post. Yes - some personal electronics of that period would seem to function at a glacial pace now.
1PW, My GPS date today is 01 July 1999. Yesterday it was 30 June 1999. I doubt your GPS is affected with this bug. I'll check my GPS date before and after 06 April and report back.

My old GPS is showing 0700 UTC (correct) on 21 August 1999. Let's see what date it shows tomorrow after 0000 UTC. The true date will be 7 April 2019.
Today's date in my old GPS (bought in 1995) is 28 August 1999. Maybe I misread it yesterday and it was 27 August 1999 or it has jumped to 28. It looks like it will remain 19.7 years behind the correct date. It's been through the 2019 and 1999 rollovers. Two other GPS units, bought in 2002 and 2004, show today's correct date.

When I checked my GPS yesterday I turned it on 15 minutes prior to rollover time and turned it off 30 minutes later. It's now almost 23 hours after rollover time and I turned the GPS on again. The date is now 6 January 1980. This is the initial GPS date. No problems with time or position.
I fired up an old TomTom today and it showed the time as 12 am. I went into the settings and it synced to the correct time, but as soon as I exited out of settings it went back to 12 am and did not change for the half hour or so I had it powered up. The location and vehicle speed remained accurate at least, although the map is way out of date or course.

This hit the built in navigation in my car. It now shows 1999 and the time is 4 hours off. The car is a 2011. A little old but they knew better at this point. I am not pleased and do not expect to see an update despite the fact that I feel I am owed one since it is less than 10 years old. They should put this stuff into cars if they are going to leave us with non functional junk.
