“The cars we drive are changing, and there’s a huge opportunity for auto insurance to change as technology helps our cars and roads become safer,” Peate said.
“Our goal is to enable the safety, savings, and freedom that come with autonomous driving. We believe providing consumers with insurance solutions that incentivize them to use [certain safety] features … will make the roads safer for all of us.”

Distilled to its basics, Avinew’s usage-based insurance program employs an AI-driven mobile app to collect telematics data and detect when semi-autonomous or autonomous features [...] are “responsibly” engaged. From this, it determines whether policyholders are eligible for a discount on their premiums.

The problem is, of course, that Navigate on Autopilot is not “full self-driving,” not even on the highway. No car on the road today can completely drive itself. That includes Teslas.

So for Musk to claim that all Tesla vehicles with Navigate on Autopilot are capable of “full self-driving” is confusing, and some would argue, dangerous.

The flying car is the Godot of technology: always on its way, never here. Ninety years ago, Henry Ford envisioned an experimental one-seat airplane called the sky flivver, only to abandon the project when one of the first prototypes crashed, killing the pilot.

Now tech firms again insist that their Godot is finally coming—but, seriously. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, the most buzzed-about product was probably Uber’s autonomous air taxi.
The ride-hailing company has said that it hopes to roll out an air-travel business by 2023. And last week, Boeing debuted a “personal air vehicle,” an electric-plane prototype.

And speaking of crashing down, the consequences of a self-driving error for an air taxi would be calamitous: a machine the size of a small car hurtling hundreds of feet per second toward a skyscraper, house, or crowded intersection.
If flying cars have a near-term future, it’s probably not urban. Rural areas—where commutes are long and interruptive skyscrapers are scarce—are the more likely initial setting for airborne technology.

A video shared with automotive news website Jalopnik shows a man in a Tesla Model X with his head tilted back and eyes closed as the car drives on a motorway.

The incident was filmed on a road headed towards Las Vegas, according to the person who captured the footage.
It is not the first time a Tesla driver has apparently been spotted asleep in the driving seat, with California Highway Patrol officers pulling over a sleeping Tesla owner last year.

Tesla consistently stresses that its Autopilot feature does not offer full self-driving capabilities
"Every driver is responsible for remaining alert and active when using Autopilot, and must be prepared to take action at any time," the firm states on its website.

But a new study raises a concern that hasn’t been considered much before: that autonomous cars could cause severe traffic jams by cruising around to avoid parking fees.

Transportation planner Professor Adam Millard-Ball of the University of California, Santa Cruz, has been researching the way that autonomous vehicles would respond to parking situations.
But an autonomous vehicle can kill time by driving at a low speed that is less costly to maintain. This leads to a situation where it is cheaper for the vehicle to keep moving even when a space is empty than to pay for parking.

“Even when you factor in electricity, depreciation, wear and tear, and maintenance, cruising costs about 50 cents an hour — that’s cheaper than parking even in a small town,” Millard-Ball said in a statement.

Full-sized driverless commuter buses are set to begin operating on some of Sydney’s busiest public transport routes within the next three years as part of a new trial of the technology.

Autonomous vehicle trials have until now been limited to less populous areas, with the first driverless shuttle bus tested in Sydney’s Olympic Park for around a year before being opened to the public last September.
However TfNSW appears eager to turn up the dial, with plans to trial connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) on “high frequency, high patronage route in Sydney within three years”.

However documents released on Friday indicate that smaller vehicles could be utlised for initial trials.

After the accident, however, the city changed the design of this portion of the road and removed the pathway. It was replaced with various types of landscaping seemingly designed to discourage jaywalkers.

Predictions that autonomous cars powered by artificial intelligence will create a safer, more harmonious world may be off base: That’s because the new thinking technology will respond to different incentives than humans, and that won’t necessarily lead to better outcomes.

There would be ways for cities to alter the self-driving cars’ behavior by adjusting parking prices to make cruising uneconomical. But that would likely mean creating more downtown spaces for them to wait out off-peak hours.

The best way to take advantage of self-driving capabilities would be for humans to keep more control – for example, by allowing autonomy only for public minivans and buses in dedicated lanes.
It would ensure that self-driving vehicles never circulate without passengers, and it would greatly increase the efficiency of public transportation by fitting capacity to demand. Best of all, it wouldn’t let artificial intelligence get too creative for humans’ good.

Optimus Ride, an MIT spinoff, is gearing up to deploy its self-driving vehicles within a mixed-use development located in Reston, Virginia. Thanks to a partnership with Brookfield Properties, Optimus Ride will deploy an autonomous vehicle service throughout Halley Rise, a development that features housing, retail, offices and public spaces in June.

“We will deploy our self-driving system at Brookfield’s Halley Rise location this summer to provide users with autonomous mobility access between office buildings as we continue to scale our business. In the future, we will advance our partnership by deploying our self-driving systems at additional Brookfield sites around the world.”
Given that Brookfield has properties throughout the world, Optimus Ride plans to deploy its autonomous services in additional Brookfield developments.

The autonomous delivery startup Nuro has raised $940 million from The Softbank Vision Fund, making it one of the most lavishly funded startups in the driverless car sector. The news comes after Nuro became one of the first startups in the world to begin operating a fully driverless commercial service on public roads.

"Our goal this year is to really scale to an entire city worth of operation," CEO Dave Ferguson told Ars last week.

Nuro's robot has a top speed of 25 miles per hour (40 km/h), which simplified the jump to fully driverless operation. A vehicle moving at 25 miles per hour has a much shorter stopping distance than a vehicle traveling at 65 miles per hour.
While Nuro's two custom robots are fully driverless, they are currently being followed around by human-driven vehicles with the capacity to intervene if the robots malfunction. Ferguson told Ars that he hopes to stop using the chase vehicles by next quarter.

The driver was not hurt nor charged, but the vehicle reportedly “sustained extensive damage.”..

According to local news outlet NJ.com, the police wrote in the report:

'The vehicle could have gone straight or taken the Adams Lane exit, but instead split the difference and went down the middle, taking the vehicle off the roadway and striking several objects at the roadside,'..."
