Wondering about transferring my Win 7 system to a new computer. Not liking Win 10. Even this late in the game I would have to pay MS something....right?
If your compurer came with Windows 7 preinstalled, it will have an OEM license which can't be used on another computer. But if you actually bought a retail version of Windows 7 you will be able to use your existing license. You should be able to use your current Windows 7 install on the new system, so you don't have to start from scratch, if you clone the old hard drive to the new one.
Ok, thanks Roger. What I have is a custom computer with Win7 pre-installed. It also came with a installation disk. Not sure if it would be OEM or just one of a batch of installation disks the computer builder bought

Be careful with this. Although the "System" will transfer, the success of many of the drivers may be questionable. Some of the newer hardware mainboards have no W7 qualified drivers to use on the new hardware subsystems. It's definitely worth a try, though...
It does not always work, but it often does. Support for moving a Windows install to new hardware has been improved in Windows 8 and 10, although it still does not always work. I remember back in the days of XP, if you did this, then you would almost certainly get a BSOD when you tried to boot Windows. This could often be remedied by booting form the XP installation DVD and doing a Repair Install of Windows.
This setting used to work in TBOSDT when transferring a Win7 image to another computer... "Keep storage drivers and remove all other installed drivers" TBOSDT is no longer available as a stand-alone product. It now comes with the TeraByte Suite. Hopefully a simple image restore will work for you.
If your product of choice has something like "Restore to Dissimilar Hardware" choose it. That always works here EaseUS ToDo Backup from Lenovo to Lenovo.
