Yes, I knew, but I don't like it. I like 7 and I don't want to use 10 for many reasons, that others here said. I payed for 7 and I would want go on with it.

I know, I feel the same.
But I know that things don't stay as I'd like them to.
Support ends. And favorite things wear down or break down and need to be replaced. And much worse: pets and friends and family get ill and die. And people can do stupid and unkind things, that we'd never expect. People can even do terrible things. Men, women and children are traumatized for life by war and other horrors. And we pollute the earth and change its climate, potentially resulting in worldwide disaster. In that light, the end of support for Windows 7 is only a very minor challenge, of course.
But apart from all that, yes, I know, lifelong support for a favorite OS version would be nice. But that is not how things are. We need to move on, and make the best of it.

    I definitely agree.
Naturally. But the thing that I find very disturbing is that I basically have not reasons - except the end of support - to switch from 7 to 10 !! For my needs and my tastes 7 works fine, and it is less intrusive, heavy etc than 10. The temptation to switch to Linux is strong. No drama for the end of support, but annoyance and anger for Microsoft. In time 10 will make his users puppets.

Win7, the malware friendly OS. I won't miss you at all. Ah yes a little bit, you brought me so many infected customers i could charge for little cleaning efforts.

Both in fact, Win7 get the award of most infected OS of 2017 by WannaCry , 98% of 300k machines, amazing.

    P.S: edited my post above.

Windows 7 Defender, such a joke... misleading the users and make them believe they were protected...

Proprietary Nvidia drivers are good for gaming. Usually support for new cards is present at day one or even before. Rarely there were delays and even then it was like one month after new cards appeared on the market. There is nothing comparable for Gnu/Linux gamers, at least those playing new, commercial stuff.

I am not a gamer, so I prefer Intel and AMD GPUs for open-source drivers.

I'm not a gamer, so it's getting close to switching the two Win 7 computers to Linux. Bye Bye M$ :thumb:

I detest 10 with the strongest of passion too and 8.1 is been the best O/S i ever had the satisfaction of depending on excellent & reliable stability.

Years ago i seen this coming and it wouldn't have been much of any real concern or issue if they would have stayed on the right track of progression in series.

But when they deviated way off course that just confirmed the suspicions i held long ago that they would make it a point to poop can their customers & users for something that only costs more time and money than it's worth.

I’ve been a member of Wilders since 2005, and it’s amazing the number of people who get desperate at the thought of the demise of support of their beloved OS. It’s been happening for all OSs of the past, XP was the one with the most turbulent crowd, always cursing MS for actually advancing the state of the art in OS software.

Vista was demonized from the outset for being the XP killer, as a result it never had a chance to take off, and Windows 7 (basically a lighter version of Vista) was finally well received by the angry crowd as Vista was seen as the sacrificial lamb, the price MS had to pay for daring to expunge XP.

Moving on to Windows 8 the game started again like a broken record, the new desktop was horrific in the mind of the Luddite crowd, sporting the lurid modern UI/Metro style start screen… As a result MS quickly produced Windows 8.1, which had the option to automatically set desktop background as Start screen. As the angry crowd was finally partly appeased by this quick remedy, but not quite ready to accept it as the new leader, as Windows 7 would reign supreme in the mind of many…

Now enter Windows 10, the real contender to Win 7, even the free upgrade was seen by many as a suspicious strategy by MS to get rid of Windows 7. The truth of the matter really, it is not MS stopping support for a particular OS, the real problem is that new programs and browsers designed to work for Windows 10 are not compatible with OSs like XP and Vista as an example. Win 7 will inevitably follow suit soon.

Furthermore, when people vent their anger on MS, they always invariably say their next computer will have a Linux distro, year after year, but as a matter of fact the truth is that Linux has barely a 2% market share in the world… Please switch to Linux, but there is no need to advertise it, just do it…

I personally think that Windows 10 version 1809 is the state of the art, technology is not like fashion, it is based on scientific breakthrough. Win 7 was released in 2009 therefore it is 10 years old, an eternity in terms of computer technology, Windows 10 v. 1809 was released on 13 November 2018, about two months old… Please do yourself a favor, forget Windows 7 and move on…

@Osaban you are totally right, same ol circus after every major Windows changes. Lot of words and whinings, few acts.
I always laugh at some people changing to Linux then coming back crying to mama Windows. Lol

Why quit Windows for Linux just use both...

Update to Windows 10 or swap to Linux, nobody really cares.

What normal people care about is that you're using a modern up-to-date OS, because that tends to be 1 less person enrolled in the botnet that will attack the people that are up-to-date.

If you're updating to Windows 10: There are many guides on how to tweak it to make it more "private".
If you're swapping to Linux: Great, more power to you. But Microsoft doesn't care and you're not "sticking it to them" by doing so.

Whatever you choose, just do it.

    Because of misguided sheeple.
But people in general are pretty dumb and way uninformed that's why there is win 10 for the uninformed masses.

This surprises me somewhat, but I guess even though Win7 was well advanced over that of XP, malware also became far more advanced over that of the XP days.

    Agreed.

The trouble with Win10 that everyone in these forums can attest to, is that it's a privacy-invading nightmare. It can be tamed to quite some extent, but one has to go to considerable effort to do so.

I agree, and possibly this the price we pay for these free upgrades. There are however, innumerable tweaks that can be performed in Windows Settings to mitigate these privacy issues (well documented with a simple Google search), not to mention programs that have been designed to do just that:

    https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

My antivirus also provides a dedicated program to deal with Win 10 privacy issues. I'm sure there are other solutions if one is concerned with privacy. I don't use either of these programs as I prefer to do it directly in Windows Settings, but it can be achieved to a reasonable level without disrupting Win 10 functionality.

Don't use Windows Apps, or at least block their connection, use OOSU10 to stop spying and you're 99% set

Yeah, I use what's available in basic privacy settings, as well as Group policy (using Win10 pro), many recommendations from here: https://www.hardenwindows10forsecurity.com/ and then finally my firewall program.

I couldn't care less when Windows support ends for 8.1 whenever since this is going to remain the high capacity production series of computing come heck or high water-and 10 can go straight to the bucket since it's not anywhere near as productive as predecessors if you ask this user. Who needs those headaches, mishandles and interruptions anyway when you have a completely stable system which even supports a quality built in backup image reserved for dependable and full backup-as in Custom Refresh-If no imager was used this would serve just as adequate a failsafe for all intensive purposes just fine.

And that's what matters- a quality system fully protectable and zippy without interferences be they internal or externally introduced.

Bye 10- If I owned 7 I wouldn't part with it either-definitely not for 10 for any reason.

I can agree with you about this fact, but for an home user I don't see substantial differences between Windows 7, 8, 8,1, 10......: no revolution, no great, magnificent, new features. I have 7 and 10 too, and I have no reason to switch finally to 10, no one. Microsoft force the users to do it.

If a person doesn't feel there's much of a difference between 7, 8 or 10. Considering the end of support, isn't that in itself an incentive to upgrade rather to stay behind?

Same here. The biggest "innovation" between W7/8/8.1/10 have been mostly cosmetic. Hah, I even remember one pro-win tech blog listing getting the startup button back and sligthly bigger taskbar as a "feature". And virtual desktop, which have been in Unix & Linux world at least from 90s ...
Biggest feature of the latest incarnation of Windows is the pervasive tracking which you really can't turn off no matter how many tweaks you try to do. Best you can do is mimize with different tricks (registry hacks, installing 3rd party software, router level blocking etc..) untill the next update is force feed and it undermines everything done and it's back to square one.

    EDIT:

    Also, the so called Fastboot....
When I first saw it I tough: Wow! this is great
Untill, the next reboot with update started rolling and waiting and waiting and waiting
I realized that the so called "Fastboot" is nothing more than hibernate enabled by default ...

I am with Easter on this one. The so called security advantages of 10 over 7 mean nothing to me. I tested my win 7 setup over several hundred of nasty samples of all types and it let nothing by
