I missed you created the .iso on a Mac. I would say that is a "no-no." Again, download the .iso on your current 1803 build using the Windows MediaCreator tool for 1809. Once the .iso download is complete, exit from the MediaCreator.

To perform the in-place upgrade from 1803, do the following:

    1. Browse to the folder where you downloaded the .iso file.
    2. Right click on the file and select Mount.
    3. Once the .iso is mounted, open the virtual drive created and browse to setup.exe.
    4. Double click on setup.exe to begin the 1809 installation.

Important! Make sure that when the screen appears that shows "Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps," it is check marked. It should be by default.

I have indeed not yet tried mounting the ISO from HD. Will try that this weekend.

On one machine that wasn't offered 1809 I went to the Media Creation Tool page and clicked on "Update me now", which downloaded Windows10Upgrade[numbers].exe, which is what I ran and successfully installed 1809.

Finally nailed down what was causing Abode Reader DC crash at program shutdown on Win 10 1809. It's the protected view option. It worked fine on 1803. Appears something its doing, 1809 does not like since the error is consistently a memory violation error in windows.storage.dll. You might not even notice this one on 1809 unless you were monitoring your Win Event logs for app errors frequently. Also Reader for the most part works fine when protected view is enabled with again, the crash occurring when Reader closes. Problem appears related to Reader's cache file entries in AppData\User folder.

Now for a very interesting tidbit in regards to 1809. Abode Reader's font driver is gone; atmfd.dll does not exist on my HDD period. However, the service reg. keys trying to start it still do exist! Found this one out courtesy of Autoruns. If one recollects, this is the driver with a major vulnerability in it.

I do using Adobe Reader add-on in IE11.

However, this Adobe Reader issue has nothing to do with the browser. Opening up a previously downloaded .pdf will result in the same crash if protected view is enabled.

Same here. Installed the above mentioned updates on two 7x64 machines with no resulting network issues.
Thanks to this outstanding Bork Tuesday thread, I was well-prepared in the event that network issues showed up.

No difference. Same behaviour as with all other attempts: stalls at blue Windows logo at first boot.

I'll let it stay in that state for some hours, but I doubt anything will happen...

Did you ever verify that virtualization is disabled in your BIOS? As I stated previously if you see in 1803 that "Core Isolation" is enabled in Windows Security Center -> Device Security, then virtualization is enabled in your BIOS and most likely the reason for the hang at first in-place upgrade boot.

I can’t since the machine does not support it (see this previous post).

Looks like you've reached "the end of the road" with that laptop as far as Win 10 goes. Proof of this is when you tried to install 1809 on a new HDD. On that regard, did you create new bootable media(DVD or USB) with the .iso you downloaded on 1803? If so, did you try to install 1809 with that media on your new HDD?

I'm about to start to accept that...

No; that might be one final thing to try...

Dell has a web page here: https://www.dell.com/support/articl...tall-windows-10-on-your-dell-computer?lang=en that shows how you can do so w/o installing a new HDD. Appears the last option, "Reinstall Windows 10 to the Dell factory image using recovery media," is what you need to do. Obviously, you need to save all your existing data beforehand and after the 1809 install, reinstall it plus all your existing programs. You need to do a 1803 image backup prior to attempting this since the install option will reformat the current OS partition.

"How to get a free Windows (or Linux) recovery image for your OEM PC

What's better than a clean install? How about a clean installation that includes all required drivers and utility programs? Here's how to locate a free Windows 10, Windows 7, or even Linux recovery image for your Dell, HP, Lenovo, or Surface PC...

    Dell

Start at this page: How to Download and Use the Dell OS Recovery Image in Microsoft Windows. After reading the instructions, download the Dell OS Recovery Tool (Windows only) and run it from an account with administrative rights. Note that the Dell tool will also create a recovery image for devices originally sold with older Windows versions or with Linux preinstalled..."

All this does is restore your PC to original factory configuration:

That would have been nice, but...
    1. This laptop is very old; at purchase it had Windows XP installed, so no Windows 10 recovery image on disk...
    2. The Dell OS Recovery Image download is (apparently) only available in 64-bits; this laptop is 32-bits...
So thank you for these tips; I would love to try them, but can’t.

I did not install the monthly jan rollup yet, so maybe that is why i don't have this fix yet.

    @Dragon1952,
As the KB4487345 knowledge base article says, it is only available from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
(I presume the fix may be included in next month's Rollup, also.)

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I created a Windows installer USB drive from the Windows.iso created by the media creation tool (using Rufus).

That USB drive does not boot on 3 different PC's...

I would try again to try to install 1809 on the laptop using a new HDD from a bootable USB drive or a DVD. Prior to doing so, verify both are bootable on another PC.

Note that in the Dell video which link I provided previously, it shows that you need to select the partition to install Win 10 on. When you tried this previously, did you format the new drive prior to installing 1809 on it? My gut is telling me that the drive has to have a least one existing partition on it for 1809 to install using the downloaded .iso source used in the creation of the bootable media.

If the 1809 bootable media still refuses to run on your laptop, I would say you're SOL on that laptop as far as 1809 goes.

Check out this thread: https://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/116612-unable-make-bootable-usb-flash-drive-rufus-3-1-a.html. Appears you will need to use an older version of Rufus that only supports MBR and BIOS options to make sure it will boot on the laptop.

Also, whatever device you are using to validate the bootable media must mirror your laptop hardware; namely it uses MBR versus GPT and has a BIOS versus UEFI.

Did you try the DVD you created? It should not have the above restrictions.
