Also thanks at BoerenkoolMetWorst, and Daveski17 once more.
As my signature says, I'm preparing for migration to Kubuntu later this year. It's always good to know solutions for if something isn't working as it should.

    OK thanks.

    I'm guessing it's not in AbiWord's preferences.

I installed LO again, installed GB language using package manager and still couldn't get spelling check working. Came across https://askubuntu.com/questions/935156/british-spellcheck-in-libreoffice,
sudo apt install hunspell-en-gb got it working. I assumed just installing the language pack would suffice.

There is an issue on my wife's ASUS netbook. When opening the spellcheck or options popup the popup stutters. Sort of shakes itself. It's caused by installing the Libreoffice KDE Integration module, the thing that's supposed to improve the Libreoffice KDE experience.

    Thanks, Iangh!

    @BoerenkoolMetWorst,
    Was this what you did:
    sudo apt install libreoffice-langpack-nl
the nl equivalent of what Iangh did for en-gb, or did you successfully use a package manager to install the language pack and get it working?

Yes, though sudo dnf install libreoffice-langpack-nl because I'm on Fedora. I did not install any hunspell, though I see that hunspell-nl is a dependency of libreoffice-langpack-nl on Fedora, so it is automatically installed.

I noticed my Kubuntu was 6.0.7.3. Read about 6.2, so thought 'super!' So used sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa and got 6.1.5.2. I'm surprised LO didn't automatically update and I had to sudo it. Second, still not 6.2. Is it usual to have to sudo LO for an update? How long before 6.2 will become available?

In Kubuntu, for most software, the version number is fixed, you don't get (feature) updates, only the security fixes. That is why you didn't automatically get an update to 6.1.5. And when you forced update, probably you didn't get 6.2.0 because it is still the .0 version, early adopter version.
(Please, anyone correct me if I'm wrong on any detail.)

That's interesting. I thought (hoped) anything downloaded via Discover software centre would auto update.

There are a couple of points here.

Whichever flavor of Ubuntu we're talking about, the "fresh" ppa at https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/ archive/ubuntu/ppa is still on 6.1.5.2 and that's the case even for 18.10 aka Cosmic. You can check that with the filter option: https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/ archive/ubuntu/ppa?field.series_filter=cosmic

So Kubuntu and other *buntu users have the "latest" for now.

As far as updates, LTS versions don't get updates for a lot of applications though updates are usually pushed for "security-related" issues.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS has more reading on LTS.

I'm on Kubuntu 18.04 as well but I avoid Discover :) If it pops up a little icon in the panel, I don't click on it. I prefer to open a terminal and to run sudo apt update followed by sudo apt full-upgrade if there's anything to be upgraded. (This process only upgrades applications and won't move the user from Bionic to Cosmic.)

As for LO automatically updating itself, even applications installed via ppas follow the same rules. The user needs to initiate the process. However, there's a beast called "unattended-upgrades". I don't fully understand what that does but it's possible that it upgrades software without the user's intervention. Again, I'm guessing here. But see https://wiki.debian.org/UnattendedUpgrades.

Why 6.2 is still not available via the fresh ppa is a mystery to me as well. In any case, I'll be staying with 6.1.5 for its life-span.

Seriously, this is so stupid, I wonder what's up with the developers. LibreOffice is packed with so many features that I couldn't even find the auto-save function, anybody? I want to know how often it auto-save documents. Also, the spellchecker seems to be pretty dumb, at least when it comes to the Dutch language.
