Lyft today announced the hiring of John Maddox, founder of the American Center for Mobility and previous associate administrator of vehicle safety research at the US Department of Transportation, to lead its autonomous vehicle safety and compliance efforts. At Lyft, Maddox will be the company’s first senior director of autonomous safety and compliance.

While more than 60 companies have received permits to test their driverless vehicles in California, Zoox has become the first permitted to actually transport people in those vehicles. The California Public Utilities Commission today granted Zoox a permit to participate in the state’s Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service pilot.

During the testing period, Zoox must have a safety driver behind the wheel and will not be allowed to charge passengers for rides. And, as part of the program, Zoox must provide data and reports to the CPUC regarding any incidents, number of passenger miles traveled and passenger safety protocols.

“This is an important milestone on our pathway to deploying a fully autonomous commercial service,” Zoox head of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs told TechCrunch via email.

As 2018 dawned, expectations for self-driving vehicles were sky-high:

Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving car company, was testing fully driverless cars and preparing for a commercial launch in the Phoenix area.

Uber was racking up millions of test miles for its own cars.

Tesla was selling a "full self-driving" upgrade for its vehicles—though the feature wasn't actually shipping yet. Several times in 2016, CEO Elon Musk predicted that the technology would be ready in about two years.

Self-driving technology seemed to be right around the corner. But then the industry was battered by bad news.

In March, Uber was forced to drastically scale back its testing activities after an Uber vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona. The same month, a Tesla customer died when his Autopilot-enabled Model X car slammed into a concrete lane divider.

Working with academics and experts from leading businesses in the car industry including Jaguar Land Rover, Ford and Bentley, as well as the National Cyber Security Centre, and funded by the Department for Transport, the British Standards Institute developed the guidance to set a marker for those developing self-driving car technology.

The duo announced that a pilot delivery program will kick off in San Francisco in “early 2019,” and will involve both meals from restaurants and groceries.

GM and DoorDash haven’t revealed the full extent of the pilot, or what the next stage will be, but it did say that “select merchants” that are already using DoorDash in the San Francisco area are on board. The underlying purpose, it said, is to “test and improve” the efficiency of autonomous deliveries in the area.

Google’s Waymo division has completed the most test miles with prototype vehicles, leading rivals including Volkswagen to acknowledge that Waymo is ahead of the pack in terms of developing a prototype.

Mercedes-Benz, which is owned by German car and truck maker Daimler is undeterred by Waymo’s progress.
“We need to be among the top two competitors who are in a position to scale up the technology and bring it into series production,” Schroeder told the paper.

Self-driving technology company Torc Robotics is partnering with Transdev, the public transportation giant, to deploy fully autonomous electric shuttles designed to provide free connections to existing transit like trains and buses.

The shuttles, which can seat up to 16 passengers, will operate in a dedicated lane offering a shared-ride mobility service at night and off-peak hours between the Massy transit station and the Paris-Saclay campus. Another autonomous shuttle service will operate on public roads offering a shared-ride mobility service throughout the business park and connecting to the tramway station in Rouen.

The electric i-Cristal shuttles have Level 4 autonomous capabilities, a designation by the SAE that means these vehicles are able to operate fully autonomously in certain conditions or geographic areas. The shuttles, which operate without a steering wheel or pedals, can travel up to 19 miles per hour.

The Japanese automaker is working on a system called Chauffeur takes over all driving duties. But it also has a system called Guardian that keeps human drivers in control most of the time. At CES 2019, Toyota explained how that is supposed to work.

Toyota is focusing more resources on the development of Guardian than the fully autonomous Chauffeur system.
Guardian seems like the best of both worlds, providing the safety benefits of autonomous driving without the need for human drivers to give up the wheel. But it’s unclear whether that future will really come to pass.

A man attending this week's CES show in Las Vegas says that a lidar sensor from startup AEye has permanently damaged the sensor on his $1,998 Sony camera.
In an email to Ars Technica, AEye CEO Luis Dussan stressed that AEye lidars pose no danger to human eyes. But he didn't deny that AEye's lidars can cause damage to camera sensors.

Lidar is essential for self-driving cars; many experts believe that it won't be possible to reach full autonomy any time soon without it. So in the coming years, we can expect to see more and more lidar sensors atop cars on public streets.

AEye uses 1550nm lasers. [...] can easily cause damage to camera sensors even if they don't pose a threat to human eyes.
AEye is known for claiming that its lidar units have much longer range than those of competitors.

For a while, Tesla has been working on a much more ambitious version of the feature called "Smart Summon."

But Musk now says that some regulators have been raising concerns about this latter feature.
"Getting some regulatory pushback" about the remote control feature, Musk tweeted on Thursday. "May not be available in all regions."
Musk didn't specify which regions might be affected. A Tesla spokeswoman declined to elaborate.
US regulators blessed BMW’s parking assistant feature in 2016
But Tesla's new parking assistant and remote control features are considerably more ambitious than the BMW technology the NHTSA blessed two years ago. So it's possible that US federal regulators believe that Tesla's technology would be out of compliance with other federal safety rules.
