I almost never use Libre, but I just noted that spellcheck isn't working at all. Is there a way to fix it, or should I simply download the newest version?

 

I noticed that so installed WPS instead.

 

You may need to manually install a dictionary.

 

I tried it but it wouldn't download, why don't they come with dictionaries installed? This is very unprofessional.

Checked it out, but the spelling check wasn't that good, but at least it worked, will try the newest versions of Libre and WPS and see what happens.

 

LibreOffice should come with dictionaries installed. And on my systems, with update from the previous version to the current LibreOffice version, spell check works as it should.
I don't know what went wrong with your installation.

If you need to download a Dutch dictionary, you can choose "Woordenlijst v 2.10g voor OpenOffice.org 3" here: https://www.opentaal.org/bestanden.
Other dictionaries (not the Dutch one, for some reason) are available from the LibreOffice extensions page.

 

Does this also work for Libre?

 

A few years ago, the dictionaries were the same for LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice, "Woordenlijst v 2.10g voor OpenOffice.org 3" worked for LibreOffice as well. I have no indication that changed for the current LibreOffice versions.
in Windows 7, a freshly downloaded OpenTaal-210G-LO.oxt is recognized as LibreOffice extension.
To be sure, you would need to try.

 

LibO seems to have spell checking problems on Linux as well.

There were issues with LibreOffice spell check in LibreOffice 3.5. See these two 2012 Nabble threads, 1 and 2.
I don't remember if the 3.5 spell check issue only affected LibreOffice on Windows, or Linux as well.
It would be annoying, if that same issue had returned. However, I don't know if the cause is similar as in 2012, or something completely different.
If you want, you could check if there's a recent bug report, and if not, you could create one.

 

I only use it on Ubuntu, but when first opened the spell checker doesn't work.

 

On Linux I had to install libreoffice-langpack-nl from the repos to get Dutch spellcheck and interface.

 

You don't get this problem with AbiWord!

 

I had the spelling issue with LO in Kubuntu. I gave up when I had the opening with Ark problem as well, http://technologyinfinite.blogspot.com/2017/07/microsoft-documents-opens-via-ark-in.html. Easy fix when somebody tells you the answer, as per usual, but now I find the 'limited' capabilities of WPS just right for me.

How does it handle MS Office compatibility?

 

Not sure, I rarely open MS Office documents, but from what I can recall it could open them.



I like the fact it can handle any text format. I'll miss it on Ubuntu as I liked its simplicity. I don't know what causes the screen flicker in 16.04 LTS but it's a known bug.

 

There's a workaround and that's to use the Adwaita theme. You can also use the Adwaita theme just for Abiword if you wish.

 

Thanks, I've read about this. I'd have to download the Adwaita theme though, right? I'm OK with LibO Writer now I've sussed out the spell checker lol.

 

Exactly how did you solve the spell checking problem?
The same way as BoerenkoolMetWorst, by installing the language pack from the repos, or some other way?

 

I gave it a quick try with a few MS Word document, just text and some comments added, but all the comments were gone. And that was even the old DOC format, not DOCX.
Unfortunately, I have to regularly open MS Office documents, so AbiWord is not an option for me.

The Adwaita theme is built-in. You don't need to install it.
