"U.S. Readies Charges Against Chinese Hackers

Government-linked hackers allegedly engaged in a multiyear scheme to break into U.S. technology service providers

Federal prosecutors are expected to unseal criminal charges as soon as next week against hackers linked to the Chinese government who have allegedly engaged in a sophisticated multiyear scheme to break into U.S. technology service providers in order to compromise the networks of their clients...

U.S. officials have described the hacking campaign as one of the most audacious and damaging orchestrated by China to date, intended to steal intellectual property and support Beijing’s espionage goals. The hacks have allowed intruders potential access to scores of American companies and government agencies that rely on the service providers for a wide range of digital tasks, such as the remote management of technology infrastructure or cloud storage...

Private-sector cybersecurity researchers previously have identified those attacks as the work of a hacking enterprise known as “APT 10” or “cloudhopper,” which they link to Beijing..."

"Justice Department Charges Chinese Hackers In Bid To Curtail Cyber-Theft...

The Justice Department announced charges Thursday against two hackers suspected of working on the orders of the Chinese government as part an alleged yearslong campaign by China's spy services to target U.S. intellectual property.

The two men, Zhu Hua and Zhang Shilong, are part of a "hacking group" known as Advanced Persistent Threat 10, according to the charges, working for a company called Huaying Haitai and in association with the Chinese Ministry of State Security...

The men are charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

The charges detail alleged cyber-attacks that targeted intellectual property, confidential business and technological information and other data at more than 45 companies in at least a dozen U.S. states and within U.S. government agencies..."

"China hacked Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and then attacked clients

WASHINGTON/LONDON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Hackers working on behalf of China’s Ministry of State Security breached the networks of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co and IBM, then used the access to hack into their clients’ computers...

The attacks were part of a Chinese campaign known as Cloudhopper, which the United States and Britain on Thursday said infected technology service providers in order to steal secrets from their clients....

Cloudhopper targeted MSPs to access client networks and steal corporate secrets from companies around the globe, according to a U.S. federal indictment of two Chinese nationals unsealed on Thursday...

Cloudhopper, which has been targeting technology services providers for several years, infiltrated the networks of HPE and IBM multiple times in breaches that lasted for weeks and months,...

The attackers were persistent, making it difficult to ensure that networks were safe...

The indictment cited one case in which Cloudhopper compromised data of an MSP in New York state and clients in 12 countries including Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Britain and the United States. They were from industries including finance, electronics, medical equipment, biotechnology, automotive, mining, and oil and gas exploration...

A British government spokeswoman declined to comment on the identities of companies affected by the Cloudhopper campaign or the impact of those breaches.

'A number of MSPs have been affected, and naming them would have potential commercial consequences for them, putting them at an unfair disadvantage to their competitors,' she said..."
