Chromium-powered web browser that will replace Edge on Windows 10

Edge on Android is pretty darn good, I use it as my primary browser on my phone. It didn't make sense for MS to maintain a separate Chromium branch that was not being used anywhere in a Microsoft ecosystem (Windows). I was half-expecting a Chromium Edge on Windows for a while to be honest. I wonder if they will keep the Edge name for the new browser though.

 

Edge on Android use the Blink rendering engine from Chromium and the WebKit engine on iOS

 

Naturally, the Edge sandboxing questions will come up, particularly from James Forshaw (Google's Project Zero and Chrome sandboxing):

Edge was holding off from sharing an undocumented sandboxing feature from other browsers on the Windows platform. Hopefully with this change to Chromium/Blink, Microsoft will open up this secret sandboxing feature that Edge has been using exclusively.

Mozilla sees the writing on the wall, with Microsoft adopting Chromium, the plus points of MS potentially balancing Google's ambitions on Chromium comes with a rider that MS no longer needs to play catch up, and hence no longer needs to test it's own ecosystem websites on Gecko....with both MS and Google sites using Chromium specific functionality, Mozilla is looking at a long fight ahead for the future of web standards.....

 

Good and golden days of browsers are gone. We used to have choice of IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome.
It will be very bad for Google to have such a monopoly.
I think it is a bad decision by MS. They might loose a lot of Bing share as as well by this.

 

Looking forward to the day we read "Firefox adopts Blink engine" on the news. Seems like we're slowly getting there with each passing day

 

It's coming to Mac OS as well. I might give it a try after it's been out for a while.

thats a result for mozillas look-away to existing working. using GPO has come too late, although ESR is available, no MSI package and many more.
firefox is a decent browser, but not professional enough for professionals.

next - MS is replacing the Edge JS-engine with the one from Google. we all know that that engine is a co-op from google and mozilla and the current engine from mozilla is faster than google.

the door for mozilla ist closed and that will be for a long time.

 

I don't think that this will happen. They've invested too much in Servo in the past years which has a lot of potential.

That said, I will never use Chrom[e|ium] unless heaven comes down. Security-wise Firefox is more or less on par with Chrome (and might become even more secure with more and more components being replaced by ones written in Rust), but privacy-wise it's definitely superior. Not necessarily by default - but FF is still way more configurable via about:config and provides APIs not available in Chromium needed for privacy-enhancing add-ons. No, for me Chrome is no alternative.

 

"Privacy-wise" lol. Unless firefox can stop ALL fingerprinting methods, many of which use simple js, such as this one https://github.com/jackspirou/clientjs, example here: http://nothingprivate.ml , then all the privacy protections are pointless. You need just 3-4 little identifiers out of the hundreds out there and you're already unique. So even if you block some of them, compared to none, it's still a waste of time. The only browser worth using for privacy is Tor and the likes of

 

This is the wrong thread to discuss this matter in detail. There are other threats covering this - and I started one myself. In any case, this discussion is too complex to pooh-pooh it with a simple lol.

.. which is based on Firefox and there is a reason for it.

 

The thing is, nobody uses Edge, so why keep spending time and money on the EdgeHTML engine, it's no surprise to me. So in the future we will have Blink and Servo, no big deal. However, Chromium and Blink have got some serious shortcomings, like blurry fonts, high resource usage and extensions run without any serious restrictions. So I do hope Mozilla will soon improve Firefox, because they made it into a mess with Quantum.

 

I am looking forward to it, I think Microsoft can really make a difference to Chromium. Edge for Android is a sweet browser and I was wondering how such a significant fork is restricted to Android. I have got my answer now, and I will look forward to this with an open mind.

And why is M$ not releasing a version for Win 8, now that it's based on Chromium?

 

Because they want everyone using the most recent OS.

 

I believe they will launch a version for Win 7 and 8.1 after the new Edge goes final.

 

As if I'm going to upgrade to Win 10 just because of Edge.

Let's hope so, it's probably going to be crappy but I still want to check it out.

Microsoft conceded and admitted that they don't know how to build a browser, so they think that Mozilla should do the same. Yeah right.
