^ Someone else reported that in the Macrium forums. Can’t find the thread even after digging around, so maybe the OP deleted it? Anyway, Macrium said that it appears to be caused by a “timing issue” and that nothing is actually blocked but that event is still generated when it shouldn’t be. They said it’ll be fixed in the next update. Are your backups actually failing?

I had to stop the backup and restart as it froze after the merge operation. By the main file date stamp and the fact the merged file was deleted, the merge previous to backup seems to have worked but I didn't have time to test integrity yet.

I'm not sure what's going on. I have disabled the hourly checkups. Earlier today I shut down the computer followed by a reboot. No outbound request from Macrium reflect in an attempt to check for updates. Version 7.2 build 3825.

´Daily checks for updates when Macrium Reflect loads´. If I had to guess the Macrium Reflect service deals with checking for updates. Although I´m really not sure about the timing, services load as part of the startup routine ?

I don't think the Macrium Service handles the daily checks for the simple reason that those checks only occur when you actually launch Reflect interactively. This means that if you disable the hourly checks, you will not get any background update checking, or even update checking when Reflect launches to perform a background scheduled backup. You'll have to actually launch Reflect for an update check to occur.

    @jphughan ,

I rarely lauch Macrium. But since disabling that hourly check I have seen an outbound call from Macrium. Less often, but still ... I haven't paid much attention, really.

So, is it time to go to v7 now? I'm still using v6 and it works fine but I am concerned about future compatibility with Windows 10 and it's ongoing updates. Macrium has been fixing v6 for major problems but for how long?

It also seems like V7 is much more stable now. There are probably going to be deals in the next few weeks to make this a good time to upgrade.

Any thoughts about this would be appreciated.

It's from March. It surprises me that there are no compatibility problems with latest Windows 10 releases.

Macrium support for a given version officially ends a year after the next major release launches, so normally V6 would have stopped receiving updates in February 2018. However, Macrium did provide some additional patches around and even slightly after that time for some rather significant issues:

    - A rather large security vulnerability stemming from a capability that someone casually mentioned in the forums and I then pressed Macrium to fix when I realized its implications.
    - An issue around images of Linux partitions being unnecessarily large (although still otherwise valid), reported by TheRollbackFrog.
    - A fix to remove an old volume snapshot driver from 32-bit versions after a monthly Windows update changed something that resulted in BSODs if that driver was installed.

In terms of future compatibility, so far all of the issues created by new Win10 non-Insider releases that Macrium has had to deal with have related to CBT, which doesn’t exist in V6 (or the Free version of V7). There are however some other issues with current Insider builds, one of which triggers a GSOD when mounting an image and the other that prevents image backups from occurring at all. Macrium says both of those are caused by separate bugs on Microsoft’s side, although they incorporated a workaround for the former in Reflect 7.2 and posted a command-line workaround for the latter that involves unloading some Microsoft filter driver for people who don't need it -- but if those bugs make it into Win10 production, they would obviously be showstoppers for practically everyone who uses V6.

I want to persistently change some settings and/or add some jobs in the Rescue Media of Reflect 6 (before creation?).

    (How) Can I do that?

    Thanks.

One can indeed edit those parameters like that (also in v6), but how do I get them (persistent) in my Rescue Media?

Be sure to take a look at the retention rules if you update to version 7. I don't know the details by heart, but by default many old backups/images were deleted ! Fortunately I did have a copy of those copies on a different harddrive.

You can't add jobs to Rescue Media, since Rescue Media has no concept of definition files. In terms of changing some settings, I'm not sure that's possible, but your best bet would be to try changing them under Other Tasks > Edit Defaults in Windows and then fully rebuilding your Rescue Media. On 7.2, hold Ctrl down and click the drop-down arrow next to Build to select "Force WIM Rebuild" (if it says "Skip", then just click Build because it will be rebuilt anyway for some other reason). On 7.1 and earlier, click Rebuild at the final step of the Create Rescue Media wizard and go through that process before generating new Rescue Media.

My retention policies were unaffected when moving from V6 to V7 because Reflect's retention settings were unchanged from V6 to V7, so I'm not sure what happened to you. Did you perhaps move from V5 to V7? If so, then I can see that possibly creating an issue because V6 introduced a completely different and much more sophisticated retention policy framework compared to V5's old "Disk Space Management" function.

Yes, I discovered that yesterday. It also can't mail when done?

Correct, although this is the first time I’ve ever seen anyone ask about email capabilities in the Rescue environment. Mail notifications are meant to confirm successful backups or advise about problems, and although the Rescue environment can perform backups, it’s far more commonly used for performing restores. Typically you'd only use it for backups if you needed to grab data from an unbootable system or were having severe problems with VSS that prevented backups from occurring within Windows. Also, the point of an email notification is to avoid situations where someone might set up a scheduled background job and then never check the logs manually, in which case they might otherwise go a while without realizing there’s a problem. With Rescue, unless you manually choose the "On Completion: Shut Down" option during the job, there’s no way to not notice the end result of your operation because that’s the only application running on your PC. What sort of use case are you envisioning for Rescue?

I use that to make a weekly clone of my Windows and other partitions.

This way I'm sure nothing is interfering (which might happen when running Reflect from the Windows partition itself).

I was hoping to use the mail feature to get a push notification on my iOS devices when cloning is finished.

I think he was referring to going from v6. Should I also go from v7.1 to v7.2?

Sorry for the ambiguity - I was referring to v6 to now 7.2. Yes too, to going from 7.1 to 7.2. I'm on Windows 10 Pro.
