I've had my $130 Android phone for over three years and I have no plans to replace it anytime soon.

I've had the iPhone 5S since it first came out in 2013. As long as it keeps getting updates from Apple, I will continue to use it.

I've had my (now controversial in some circles) Huawei android Mate (Phablet) since it first hit the stage courtesy Amazon. Lucky for those like me who snagged onto that very high Battery Life (at the time) 4080mAh handset and they been running like new ever since. Days and days without a need for charge suits just fine.

I still have an ancient dumb phone. It's used only as a last resort. The battery lasts for weeks.

I also don't plan to replace my iPhone SE - not until it works or until Apple releases it's successor (which may never happen).

The only reason to upgrade my smartphone is to have a better camera: for internet I prefer desktop.

Only as much that I believe it is Australia among one made some pushback against Huawei expanding 5G coverage or setting up that place with their services because of an alleged link to the gov (that we always hear so much about these days).

More recently USA voiced some concern over Huawei expanding coverage in Canada over the same supposed potential issues.

Aside from that aspect of things, absolutely there's no controversy in the superior quality many find with Huawei handsets, their production, or distribution of the same. One of the first with high powered Battery rating etc. I admit now I miss the Honor 5x but am looking at getting a P series but it won't be the latest flagship P20 just yet. Although the specs do look very impressive.

People are keeping phones longer thanks to Apple getting the prices up to $1,000+ (with Samsung and everyone else following right behind them). I'm not finding the value in them and the more expensive they get the more likely I will be to go back to a dumb phone.

One thing I absolutely hate in the smarphone world is the forced device upgrade because device vendor choose not to deliver OS upgrade to device that is less than year old.

For example, I just now got Android 8 to my phone only to find out that Android 9 will not be supported....
And this phone appeared to market at the end of 2017 ....

    EDIT:
Wow, someone has noticed the same thing I saw several years ago.
Paid tech bloggers blather how this or that new model has maybe inch bigger screen, maybe few more megapixels or even more rounded corners and sleek design...
And those "features" should be worth the extra hundreds of dollars? For a thing that costs maybe 1/10th to manufacture in China?

    Who ***** cares!

I agree with most all the above.

Higher prices (especially for portable handsets) doesn't always equate IMO to a better longer lasting device. In fact I have found this same in ALL software as well and another reason why when something new and/or an upgrade comes along, it better prove to be worth all the attention and effort in order to convince it's a suitable replacement for what is been running all along just fine anyway.

Of course most know by now for example, regarding new iPhone prices, that the cost IS something else highly worth comparing. Not everyone is sold on the age old hype that the more the better. Plan to hang on to my Huawei devices as long as they keep working to expectations. What has been proven so far is that it's exceeded those expectations in every way and I for one am not in the mood to learn my way around the neighborhood again for the umpteenth time just because something new is sprung out on the market and is enjoying favorable reviews (or experience) everywhere we turn.

Smartphone companies also have a frustrating habit of introducing features no one asked for, and often actively hate, in the name of “innovation.”

That's my number one issue. Oftentimes these features get in the way of other useful features - so you have to turn them off. And then what's the point?

The one feature I don't mind being constantly improved is the camera. First now I've been able to ditch my PNS for a smartphone. First now they are good enough to be genuine replacements. Not that the PNS markets haven't been shrinking rapidly anyways.

That's right. Routine competition on a separate business model anyway. Their handsets are awesome!! Qualcomm Snapdragon architecture is been magnificent on my Mates. Honor 5x as well. But Kirin is cutting the edge.

Aside my Honor 6X pro, I have 2 Sony Xperia, the XA1 Ultra and XA2 Ultra, both with excellent spec and very reasonable prices, nothing to do with those overpriced IPhones I consider more as consumer traps.

That's how I generally have always looked at them. Overpriced and not necessarily power user friendly. Don't get me wrong. If back long ago Apple iPhone would or could have proved more effective for general purpose usage, like tons of others I would naturally have jumped on that bandwagon and also likely would bitten my nails off every time I heard or read a public report of they been hacked again. Then again android fanatics would have pulled me away to the little green robot eventually anyway.

However at about that same time period Android for the most part had already laid the cement for android (JellyBean 4me), and along with the absolute stockpile of online resources openly available to perform useful mods and such on it, it took me no time flat to pick up on the chartable layout of it and even enhance security etc.

Ever since I been pleased as peaches the decision that leaned me in that direction. Plus android has saved this owner tons of hard earned currency in comparison to their chief competitor too.

My Nokia 6120 Classic is still going strong. I would consider upgrading to an android / ios spywarephone if Google / Apple pay me $xxx monthly to use it. Otherwise they can GFU.

Not much reason to upgrade plus it's always more money and not worth it

USA still the best. But barely.
I've had fun lowballing auctions of high end 2-5yr old Androids. I've won a couple auctions over the years & got flagship phones for 10-15% of the original new prices.

That's a good way of getting decent phones cheaply. A flagship phone which is a few years old, can still perform well today, unless you want to run very demanding games.
