Bork Tuesday, Any Problems Yet?

OK, I stumbled upon one thing after the cumulative update installation. MS Edge took exclusive rights for opening of *.pdf files instead of Adobe Reader. Even though Reader tried to retake the rights back it didn't work it. I had to run the repair of Reader installation, then Reader was able to retake the rights back.

 

Temporarily 'unmetered' my Home, and for the 1803 'laggards' the Cumulative is KB4462919.

No issues, pretty quick.

Now on build 17134.345 (from 320).

This doesn't happen every time you install a Windows Update? I've been seeing this since the Anniversary Update.

 

Not in my case. It happened the first time. Will see how it goes with future updates.

 

No problems in this regard in 1803. Check your default file associations, program assignments. etc. As I recollect, I had to do some "finagling" in those areas due to Edge's overly aggressiveness in regards to wanting to hog .pdf control.

They are dealing with a sequencing error. The only way to get KB3177467 (a prerequisite) onto every W7 system is to pull the October updates from windows update. MS realized that enterprise clients that only install security-only updates had ignored KB3177467 when it was issued back in September 2016 as a critical update (though not as a security update). Typically servicing stack updates are not considered security updates, however, MS re-released KB3177467 on Oct 2018 as a security update with no changes to the original code, primarily to placate the enterprise. Users with the original version of KB3177467 installed will have had no problem installing the October rollup or security only update.

 

If you want to stop all updates of any kind for as long as you whish, open local group policy editor then:
Change this: Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update/Configure Automatic Updates = Not configured to Disabled
Any option under Enabled will still make it search for updates automatically.

This is something I rarely find with google. So it may help you.

 

I have not seen a new version of W7 Oct monthly rollup yet after mine was pulled. They only gave me a preview of the monthly rollup for W7.

 

Wish me luck. Currently downloading 1809 4.5 Gb from MS in form of their ISO. 4 hours remaining.

 

The support guys told me a few days ago to not do that. Is it a good idea?

 

It just got knocked off at 4%. Guess i'll wait until the get their P's & Q's together and release a solid update.

Only a couple PC's with 10 anyway that hardly see light of day anyway.

Yeah i'm so turned off even taking time to try to update. If it means anything, the Win 10's been sitting in mothballs for months. Never seen so much activity running in the background constantly in all my life. That direct ongoing crap is just not sitting well compared to it's predecessor(s). It really is gone downhill with Windows 10 in everything EXCEPT Windows Defender IMO. Ugh. Back on 8 now and relieved.

I agree that the problem is using non-professional beta testers. But this fact is not unique to Microsoft with many other major software development concerns doing the same.

The reason for this migration is simple - money. Professional software testers command a high price and frankly, they are worth every penny.

Bottom line - Microsoft has become a monopoly in the PC desktop market by its "robber baron" tactics since its inception. What you are now witnessing in every increasing frequency is a result of this status. The solution is simple. Unlock Microsoft's stranglehold on the desktop OS market.

 

They had none of these development problems before they decided - like everyone else - to go "fast" and "break" things.
They can just go back to the old model, boom, problem solved. Would work for every other company out there.
