I guess it's time to help Microsoft by pointing them in the direction where the 1809 upgrade file deletion issue may lie. This really "does severely rub me the wrong way" though.

I assume a Win 10 feature upgrade works similar in fashion to that of a Win 10 reset. That is AppData folder files are left intact and not modified/deleted when the latest version of Win 10 is installed via reset processing. I have done multiple past Win 10 resets. What I discovered is after a successful reset if you run "sfc /scannow" command, sfc will find errors in AppData folder files/references and make the necessary repairs. o_O This implies that Win system files/settings in some capacity must exist or reference data in those directories.

Now how many would realize this discrepancy exists and as a rule, run SFC/DISM after a reset? Additionally, is it possible that Win 10 self-repair activity could also create like discrepancies in those directories? Is it possible if these discrepancies existed at the time the Win 10 1809 feature upgrade was performed, they caused the upgrade processing to "go bonkers" and start deleting user files along with system files in those directories?

Hardly. All we can do is make a "whodunit" poll. I vote "click-happy users themselves".

Just for the record 1809 fried my system so it was not a file issue. There are more driver issues than they are reporting trust me.

Issue with Intel onboard multimedia processor was reported.
But that would be another type of discussion. Problems with drivers are something to be if not expected then at least understood (to a greater or lesser degree).
User's documents is a big no no.
You need to look at what is likely and not what is possible (is that the occam's razor?). If what you assume is true then chances are overwhelming that more users would be affected. The first question that needs answering is why are the reports so sporadic.
I would suspect, as this is a security site, that many members here (as I have) waited for the date and already upgraded. Also, less tech savvy members would run for help here. I have not seen a single missing documents issue being reported on Wilders.

    Thanks for that Ron.

There's more, but this is more or less the crux.
OK itman, you can fire your guns now. Seems it was their fault after all.

"Delete" is the most dangerous word in computing. Careful how you use it. :D
    And that includes Microsoft.

@Seer why did you get so upset about this?
Read the carefully the blog entry from January 30, 2015
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/mic...10-for-enterprise-more-secure-and-up-to-date/
...and many consumers today (or yesterday or tomorrow) expect to have control over their devices instead of handing it over to microsoft. What did microsoft did for those? They crippled windows 10 pro features with each update to further and further restrict their choices. So yes Microsoft treats all end customers as guinea pigs; correction 10 home version users are the lab rats and 10 pro users are the guinea pigs...

I always tend to get upset when someone is spreading fud based on suppositions and personal biases. I did not really think the users were responsible. It's just that the boat started rocking a bit more than it should have and I was trying to calm the waters. So I ended up as a defender of Microsoft.

It failed twice for me for that reason.

I am hoping in my case it was "self-inflected" and when 1809 is reissued it won't reappear again. I had set the SATA controller for my two DVD writers to ACHI on 1803 from their previous IDE setting that was used for all previous Win 10 releases. No problem with the ACHI setting in 1803 but suspect the 1809 upgrade "choked" with that setting.

    pandlouk,
I see your point and I too do not agree with such customer policy. But at the end of the day, Windows is what it is, you can take it or leave it. There are alternatives. But some just love to whine. Sometimes I think that's the only reason they use Windows.

Hehe :). On the opposite I do think that at least some of those users got tired to wait for the update to finish and forced shutdown their systems...

I never doubted they were at fault.

Also appear my "theory" was not too far off track. It is scary that they are "fooling around" with user AppData folders since it appears they attempted to create new from existing ones. It goes without saying that if anything is screwed up in existing Win builds, it is user profile data.

Unfortunatly the only other option is linux and even there there is a tendency of "we know what is best for you".
From my personal experience at least 2 out of 10 people will force shut down their system if they think something is off.

I read the Microsoft blog posting and what was the issue was another suspicion I had that I did not post. Namely, when the folders were not physically located at their default locations.

No no, this only happens if you hardlinked user folders. I never used this feature except for Euro Truck Simulator (heh) couple of years ago since I couldn't move it's user folder from c:.
The statement is OK, it says what happened, why and how. It is also very sincere and realistic regarding recovery.

Yes, I have noticed this trend. Windows is still much more modular (boy am I going to be flamed for this).

Modularity in MS OSes was lost back in 1992 with win 3.1 and the introduction of the registry...:p
