Bork Tuesday, Any Problems Yet?

Actually, MS has added 'Downloads' to the list of files that might be deleted in Disk Cleanup, as I always check everything in the list, I was alarmed at first as my Downloads file disappeared. But that was no bug or mistake as it is not checked by default, all the other folders were fine

 

The only problem I have with 1809 is my AV Avira, re-installing it after the upgrade I could not access the GUI and check for updates, but I can't blame MS or Avira, for the time being, I'm using Windows Security which to my surprise has 'Ransomware Protection' tab within its Virus and threat protection configuration.

The above implies that perhaps a immediate 1809 update after the upgrade actually caused the file deletion. I am not aware of any restore points being created as part of a Win 10 feature upgrade. Then there is the question of if the restore would work. I have never been able to do one since upgrading to Win 10.

 

I also wouldn't advise performing system restore since this operation could overwrite deleted data and could by this prevent other undelete tools to recover lost data.

This right here is why I still blow a loud horn for Windows 8 and for the life of me cannot understand why Microsoft omitted that fantastic restore utility in Custom Refresh from Win 10. Many Win 8 users can turn to it in a moment of time and is infinitely better that System Restore ever could be since it operates off the .WIM file format. That feature would greatly protect against Win 10 issues by performing a simple rollback almost similar to imaging programs!

What "tool" do they talk about in these articles? There is no tool nor will it ever be one. Data recovery is well understood and documented, they can't just whip out a magic wand. Most users put their stuff on Desktop and My Documents on the system partition. If the files were deleted at the end of the update process (because of say messed up settings for Storage Sense automated cleanup), so after the massive multi-GB writes on the system partition, then the chances of recovery are good. But if something went wrong at the beginning, no "tool" in this universe will help. It's that simple.
Tool. Jeez. And people are actually bying it and calling MS.

Agree 100% and really don't see any alternative short of a good imaging program's saved image. Microsoft IMHO apparently chose to ignore such a dependable-reliable safeguard feature (Win 8's Custom Refresh) for Windows 10 which i see degrades the safety of their entire continuous rollouts series. You would think it might been better for them to add it. After all they still have (Backup and Restore)Windows 7 in the Control Panel as a feature. Oh Geez

 

Everybody will recover something. No one will recover everything.
The sooner they start the better the chances. This is now, what, 6 days since files were deleted?
Mninimalist said he would not recommend System Restore, I would not recommend turning on the PC.

All humor aside from this end. Yes this newest debacle can be viewed as hilarious "IF" you weren't affected, but bejeebus!, they have got to slow down and cool their jets. It's painfully obvious this ordeal is a slippery part of the floor that they walked completely around on instead of getting a mop to it. Or oil dry. Reading articles from forums of those affected, and they seem to be not Windows 98 starters like many here in Wilder's, this is the last thing Microsoft needed just when it looked like they might be on some better more stable footing with Windows. Not to mention enjoying a little distance from the Telemetry noise many are still fuming over.

On the upside they have come out with admitting something went wrong. Quality Control Department-they are looking at you.

 

Just applied Win 10 1803 Oct. cumulative, Adobe Flash, MRT, and Office 2010 updates w/o issue; at least so far ………….

Now time to turn off Win Updating for another month less MS tries to sneak in another 1809 upgrade to the Home version.

 

I updated Windows 7 and Office 2010 with no noticeable problems.

My personal files were not deleted

 

Whew!! I forgot to check if all my AppData folder files are still there. They are …….. Hallelujah!

The update installed fine, but as I checked Event Logs there was an error that said it failed. Upon second check for updates, there was nothing, all green. So I looked at the KB article and it said that 4464330 needs KB4465477 to be installed, if not it will be offered. I did not have it. It was offered automatically, but was installed after the 4464330. Go figure. So I had to unistall 4464330, and install it again with 4465477 already installed. Rebooted, this time no error was logged. So,

No problems here, fast and flawless...

 

I installed KB4462923, October 9, 2018, Monthly Rollup for Windows 7,
MSRT KB890830,
and KB4459922, 'recommended' Security and Quality Rollup update for .NET Framework.
Next, KB3177467, Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1: October 9, 2018, was offered, and was also installed.
All went well, no issues.

Next, I checked for updates again, and Windows Update presented KB3150513, "Latest compatibility definition update for Windows", of which the KB article details say:
"This update provides the latest set of definitions for compatibility diagnostics that are performed on the system. The updated definitions help enable Microsoft and its partners to ensure compatibility for all customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system. Installing this update also makes sure that the latest Windows operating system version is correctly offered through Windows Update, based on compatibility results."
As I do not want to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 (not ever), I don't need KB3150513. So I hid it.

 

Yup, that was the cause. Just updating with the results. Drivers for audio display-video sometimes are/been a stick in the eye with every Windows adaptation.

 

Did the updates for Win 7 and 1803 today and saw no problems so far... In fact, the 1803 updates appear to have fixed a few minor issues this month, so that's a plus.

 

JFYI, all three updates (Cumulative update KB4464330, Adobe Flash and MS Removal tool) installed fast and without a single issue.
Note: The October's upgrade runs smoothly and without loss of documents.
