This week the Government submitted its sentencing recommendation. Franklin pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanor which carries a maximum prison term of a year. While the Government doesn’t go that far, it believes a significant sentence is required.

“[T]he government recommends the high-end sentence of six months’ imprisonment, to be followed by a one-year term of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment of $100,” the sentencing position reads.

The Government argues that a prison sentence is warranted given the “brazen and public” manner in which Franklin broke the law and “appeared not to care” that this would affect the makers of the movie.

A US judge has sentenced an Atlanta man to two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for sabotaging one of the US Army's payroll databases with a "logic bomb."

The man's sentence is related to an incident that occurred in November 2014 and affected the US Army's Regional Level Application Software (RLAS).
According to court documents, Mittesh Das, 49, of Atlanta, Georgia, was hired by a company that was contracted by the US Army to manage one of the databases part of the country-wide RLAS system.

Following a long-winded investigation, authorities charged and arrested Das in April 2016, and he later pleaded guilty in September 2017. Besides the two-year prison sentence and three years of supervised released, Das was also ordered to pay $1.5 million in restitution for the damages he caused.

"Your offending is serious, sustained and sophisticated," the magistrate said, as reported by The Age. "You knew what you were doing was wrong."

The teenager pleaded guilty back in August, but was sentenced Thursday, Sept. 27. No conviction will be recorded, but an eight month probation order will be put in place.

Ownership of the Bitcoin wallet containing over 1000 Bitcoin was seized and the funds were transferred to police. This is the first time in Israeli law that Bitcoin has been seized, and the state will file to confiscate the funds if Git is convicted.

Oklahoma City police arrested two men last week on suspicion of hacking and stealing $14 million worth of cryptocurrency from Crowd Machine, a cryptocurrency startup.

According to KFOR, an Oklahoma City TV station that first reported the arrests, the two men are Fletcher Robert Childers, 23, and Joseph Harris, 21, both of Missouri.

Crowd Machine admitted to the hack a day later, on September 24, and some cryptocurrency exchanges stopped trading its tokens. On the next day, the company revealed that authorities made an arrest. The hackers' identities were made public on Friday, after the KFOR report.

Childers and Harris are the fourth and fifth suspects arrested in the US for SIM swapping. The technique has become widely popular with hackers in the past year.

The DOJ's press release has a lot to say about the seriousness of the offense and the seriousness of the FBI in tracking down government employees who carelessly handle classified code.

This sentence does nothing of the sort. To those not closely watching these things (i.e., people who'd never read this press release in the first place), it may seem like the DOJ is serving up justice.

But for those of us who've seen certain people -- like General Petraeus -- mishandle classified info in a much more egregious fashion (giving his mistress, and biographer, access to top secret info) and walk away from it pretty much unscathed, this statement from the DOJ is not just hollow. It's hypocritical.

A French security official has earned themselves a fast-track ticket to the Bastille after being arrested for allegedly selling “state secrets” on the dark web in exchange for Bitcoin.

The unidentified agent, who worked for the General Directorate for internal security (GDIS), was arrested on September 26, Le Parisien reports.
Le Parisien reports that the agent had been working with organized crime groups as well as economists who were keen to get see the government information.

Data files within the GDIS can be classified as “confidential defense” or “secret defense.” Leaking files with this level of security clearance can be punished with up to seven years imprisonment and a fine of $115,000 (100,000 euro).

The CEO of a company that took Blackberry phones, stripped them of their cameras, microphones and GPS and then installed encryption software in order to create a secure phone, has pleaded guilty to conspiring with drug cartels.

As well as stripping down the Blackberry devices and installing PGP software to allow for encrypted communications, Phantom Secure ran servers in Panama and Hong Kong as a way to stay out the reach of Western government investigators, and used proxies to disguise the physical location of those servers.

The company also installed and used remote-wipe systems on their phones so they could be cleared of any incriminating evidence if seized by law enforcement. He was usually paid in Bitcoin.

The U.S. Capitol Police have announced the arrest of an individual who allegedly posted the private information of U.S. senators on the Internet.

The press release from the United States Capitol Police states that a 27 year old suspect named Jackson A. Cosko was arrested for Making Public Restricted Personal Information, Witness Tampering, Threats in Interstate Communications, Unauthorized Access of a Government Computer, Identity Theft, Second Degree Burglary, and Unlawful Entry.

According to Politico, Cosko had previously worked for Democratic Sens. Maggie Hassan of and Barbara Boxer, who are now retired. Recently, Cosko had worked for Senator Maggie Hassan until May 2018 as a “legislative correspondent/systems administrator”.

Hacker Gets 17 Years in Jail for Cyberstalking Female Housemate, Bomb Threats

Ryan S. Lin, 25, engaged in a cyberstalking campaign against a 25-year old former female housemate between May 2016 through Oct. 5, 2017, hacking into her online accounts and stealing personally identifiable information, as well as private information such as photos, diary entries, medical details, and more.

The stolen data was subsequently distributed by Lin to hundreds of people in her circle of friends and her family members, co-workers, and other unknown third parties.

Investigators also found out that Lin occupied his time with other things besides cyberstalking his former housemate, as he made more than 120 hoax bomb threats and sending unsolicited pornographic images.

Furthermore, the criminal also accepted as part of his plea agreement to receive a sentence of a minimum of 7 years and a maximum of 17 and a half years of imprisonment, with the judge sentencing him to the maximum possible time behind bars.

Filipino authorities have advanced on international criminals suspected of running a large-scale Bitcoin BTC pyramid scheme. Authorities have detained two of the six individuals thought to have defrauded South Korean investors for over $33 million, while the others remain on the run.

The immigration authorities of the Philippines will deport the foreign fugitives to South Korea. Manila Bulletin reports the pair ran the scam from Pasay City over approximately six months, starting in December 2015.

Police allege one Korean citizen and five Chinese nationals stole millions of dollars from South Korean citizens armed with nothing but false promises and cryptocurrency hype.

Authorities arrested South Korean Go Yangsung (48) directly for his connection with the Bitcoin pyramid scheme, and Chinese authorities were already hunting Lian Lolong (36) for economic crimes.

Even if foreign government hackers never see the inside of a U.S. courtroom, bringing criminal charges against them is still a key prong in American deterrence policy, a top Department of Justice official said Thursday.

“Imagine a world … in which there are no criminal charges” and the private sector is left to levy the allegations themselves, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Adam Hickey said at the CyberNext conference in Washington, D.C. “What message does that send to a foreign hacker or the government he works for?”

In a series of cases in which nation-state hackers charged by DOJ remain at large, “all of those charges served a greater purpose” beyond apprehending the alleged perpetrators, Hickey said. The indictments have enabled other U.S. responses such as sanctions as well as joining with allies to call out state-sponsored hacking, he said.

A Chinese man has been stealing electricity from a local railway network operator in order to power his Bitcoin BTC mining rigs.

Exact details of how the man stole the electricity have not been confirmed, but it appears he hacked into the Chinese railway’s mains to steal $15,000 (104,000 yuan) of electricity. His cunning plan was derailed after getting arrested by the authorities, though.

The Chinese man, Xu Xinghua, has been fined $14,500 (100,000 yuan) and sentenced to three and half years in prison for the offense, local news outlet The Paper reports.

It seems that Xinghua began stealing the electricity towards the end of last year, as Bitcoin’s price was skyrocketing. As of April 2018, Xinghua had mined a total of 3.2 BTC – worth over $20,000 at the time of writing.

The bearded Frenchman who admitted in June 2018 to being underground drug trafficker "OxyMonster" has now been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Miami-based US District Judge Robert N. Scola Jr. also ordered Vallerius on Tuesday to forfeit nearly 100 bitcoins and over 121 units of bitcoin cash. At current rates, that totals over $700,000.

In a letter submitted to the court, Vallerius' wife, Yasmin Vallerius, wrote in a Hebrew-language letter that his arrest had "broke him mentally."
