Tesla Model S engulfed in fire in Poland

The Volunteer Fire Brigade of Wałbrzych, Poland, posted an image on Monday of four firefighters trying to extinguish a blaze that erupted from a Tesla Model S vehicle in Boguszów-Gorce town. According to Polish news agency Polsat News, the car was completely engulfed in the fire outbreak, the cause of which is yet to be ascertained.

Apple’s autonomous vehicle fleet swells 27% in four months

Apple keeps adding autonomous vehicles to its test fleet in California, boosting its ranks 27 percent since May, according to records from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

The company now has 70 autonomous vehicles permitted to test on public roads, Mac Reports first reported. The permits, which are issued by CA DMV, require a safety driver to be behind the wheel.

Last month, the company disclosed its first accident, according to a report filed with the CA DMV. The low-speed accident occurred August 24.

There was just one accident involving a self-driving vehicle (that one was owned by Delphi) reported to the DMV in 2014. So far this year, there have been more than 40 accidents involving self-driving cars reported to CA DMV.

"Tesla Model 3 Stolen From Mall of America Using Only a Smartphone..."

Allegedly the car was stolen after Tesla customer service, over the phone, reportedly "handed the thief the keys" by allowing him to add the car, by VIN number, to his Tesla account. The alleged thief then made it 1,000 miles before being caught.

Once inside, the thief disabled the car's GPS tracking system and nearly got away scott-free. After stealing the vehicle, he was found days later in Waco, Texas and was only able to be tracked by monitoring where he was accessing Superchargers along the way.

San Francisco gathered a smorgasbord of information on autonomous vehicles last year and encapsulated its findings in a white paper that was kept under wraps until last week, when an enterprising former government employee acquired it through a public information request and published it.

The paper was supposed to be published earlier this year, but the death of Mayor Ed Lee and the subsequent political shuffle sidetracked the project, said Henning, who is now the co-founder of a financial-tech startup.

Together, the responses helped the city visualize how it might integrate the technology into its own fleet of 7,600 vehicles — not to mention buses and mass transit vehicles operated by the Municipal Transportation Agency.

Henning argues that government shouldn't wait for the market to solve all these challenges and that many won't be solved without government participation.

The New South Wales government has welcomed the first passengers on its Driverless Smart Shuttle at Sydney Olympic Park, with the service set to officially start next week, marking stage two of the state's driverless trial.

The Navya shuttle is considered a level four, highly autonomous vehicle designed to carry up to 12 passengers. It can travel up to 40kmph in autonomous mode, with features including front and rear cameras, LIDAR, GPS technology, and autonomous emergency brakes.

The automated cars have adaptive cruise control and automatic braking and can read traffic signs and remain within their lanes.

The National Transport Commission (NTC) is concerned that Australia's existing privacy and information access frameworks might not be sufficient in addressing the new privacy challenges automated vehicles are expected to bring.

The NTC, as part of a broader program of work on national automated vehicle reform, on Thursday published a discussion paper [PDF] considering specifically data recording and sharing obligations on automated driving system entities, as well as the power for governments to access data, including for law enforcement purposes, that has come from cooperative intelligent transport system (C-ITS).

Citing mainly concerns over citizen surveillance, the NTC said that surveillance device laws are unlikely to place practical restrictions on government collection of personal information.

"Law enforcement collection, use and disclosure of C-ITS and automated vehicle data may result in increased surveillance opportunities."

May Mobility launched its first low-speed autonomous shuttle service in Detroit this summer. By March, the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based company will be operating in at least three U.S. cities.

The company, which just announced plans to expand to Columbus, Ohio, is planning to add another route in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It’s a rapid acceleration for a company that was founded less than two years ago.

The aim of the program is to study how mobility impacts city infrastructure and prepare the community for autonomous vehicles. The program will also focus on how these autonomous vehicles improve or affect the mobility of elderly and disabled people.

Aeva fires one steady beam of light instead of millions of discrete pulses, which allows it to measure the frequency of the returning photos.
So Aeva’s lidar sensor that doesn’t just create a 3-D map of the world, it flags everything that’s moving—and the stuff that’s moving tends to be extra important. Distinguishing the kid from the parking meter becomes a snap.

Aeva can also use its system to determine the exact velocity of the car it’s sitting on. Most robo-cars now do that with an inertial measurement unit, Peterson says, but redundancy is always good.

“We are shipping our product to some of our automotive partners,” Salehian says, declining to specify which car companies he’s referring to. “This technology is available today.”

The next step is to ease those interactions by having self-driving vehicles signal their intentions to pedestrians, cyclists and human drivers. Now Ford has revealed its proposed standard for just that, with a series of flashing lights that signal "intent."

In a blog post on Tuesday, Ford said that other road users shouldn't be expected to change their behavior around autonomous vehicles. But the company believes that any Level 4 autonomous vehicle -- that's one that operates in certain situations without a human driver needing to take control -- should "communicate intent."

Ford's proposed standard would have autonomous cars use the following signal lights: two white lights moving side-to-side would signal the car is yielding and is about to stop. A solid white light would signal the vehicle is driving autonomously. And rapidly blinking white lights would serve as a "start-to-go" warning before the car accelerates.

We're not talking about the future anymore. Driverless vehicles are here. In the latest example, in Catalonia, Spain, an autonomous bus called Èrica is being tested around the region to help citizens become familiar with what driverless technology entails.

These bus experiments are also designed to allow local-government officials to adapt to this new means of transportation, which they expect to be fully functioning by 2020.

AMTU director Joan Prat tells ZDNet that the shuttle is able to 'see' what happens within 200 meters and is programmed to come to a rapid halt, if necessary, when it detects an object at less than 30 centimeters.

"We still need to overcome hurdles, such as legislation, and carefully deal with moral issues as well as the coexistence of people and machines in the urban environment," he says.
