I do believe that MS solutions lately are becoming more and more gimmicky.
EMET was easy to setup and bulk-control - WDEP is cumbersome.
CP was easy and powerful - the system settings is cumbersome.
Skype 7.4 had multi-chat window options - Skype 8 is a toy.
So this might follow in the same vein.

This means users who purchase Office 2019 and Office 365 subscribers would no longer be offered the desktop version of OneNote, but the Microsoft Store version.

OneNote for Windows 10 has received substantial improvements lately, and Microsoft says this is the reason why it makes sense to bundle it into the upcoming version of the Office suite.
OneNote 2016 for desktop would no get new features, but support will continue to be offered and the app will still be available optionally for anyone with Office 2019 or Office 365. Support will be offered, however, and as part of the extended support period, OneNote 2016 will get security patches until October 2025.
Office 2019 will require Windows 10
William Devereux, OneNote Product Manager, says the synchronization engine available in the Windows 10 version of the app will be integrated into clients for other platforms as well.

There’s no ETA for the new Office version just yet, but it’s expected to launch in the fall of the year. Office 2019 will run exclusively on Windows 10, and Microsoft is also planning a Mac version, though in this case plans for the OneNote app are yet to be shared.

This is what the company says in an FAQ detailing the process of replacing OneNote apps in Office, adding that “OneNote 2016 isn’t going anywhere.”

Microsoft, however, warns that when support for OneNote 2016 comes to an end in 2025, support would no longer be offered, so sooner or later you’ll still have to move to the Windows 10 version.
You can install OneNote for Windows 10 at any moment
While OneNote for Windows 10 will be offered by default in Office 2019, customers will be allowed to skip its installation and go instead for the desktop version of OneNote 2016.

Microsoft explains that it’ll run a series of checks when installing Office 2019, and in case OneNote 2016 is detected, the Windows 10 version won’t be forced on users.
Customers will be allowed to install the Windows 10 version of OneNote at any point even if they skip it when deploying Office 2019. Additionally, Windows 7 users will have to upgrade to Windows 10 because Office 2019 only supports the latest version of Microsoft’s desktop operating system, and afterward, all of the aforementioned guidelines apply.

Until someone comes out with a viable Outlook replacement Office isn't going anywhere. It's the main reason I keep it.

I don't believe Thunderbird supports EAS (Exchange ActiveSync). eM Client does.

Thunderbird with Lightning extension (IIRC it is installed by default) can sync calendar over other protocols. Thunderbird also can be configured together with LDAP to sync address book.

Outlook.com/Hotmail accounts work best using EAS in my experience. IMAP works poorly with these accounts.

Microsoft Is Updating Office Desktop on Windows With New Features for Insiders

Microsoft has released a new update for Office Insiders in both Fast and Slow channels. The latest preview build of Office desktop app comes with new features, improvements, and as well as fixes.

The September feature update for Office Fast Insider pushes the version number to build 10904.20005 and includes new features for Outlook. There are no new features for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in this release.

Microsoft launched a new ad campaign for its Office suite today. Usually, that’s not something especially interesting, but this one is a bit different. Instead of simply highlighting the features of Word and Excel, Microsoft decided to pitch Office 365 and Office 2019 against each other

The reason for that is obvious: Office 365 is a subscription product while Office 2019 (think Office Home & Student or other SKUs) comes with a perpetual license, so that’s a one-time sale for Microsoft. Subscriptions are a better business for Microsoft in the long run (hence its recent focus on products like Microsoft 365, too).

Now, Office 365 users are the ones who get all the online features, including a bunch of AI-driven tools, while the Office 2019 versions don’t get any of these.
Unsurprisingly, in the new ads, which give the actors twins various challenges to perform in the likes of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Office 365 beats Office 2019 every time. Yawn.

My employer offers huge discounts on major office releases through the HUP (Home Use program), so at $19 cdn for Office Professional Plus 2019, it's an offer I couldn't refuse, especially that it's non-subscription.

Now, as spotted by ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft has updated its HUP FAQ to reflect that the perpetual licenses are no longer offered.
Specifically, the perpetual licenses that were offered were Office Professional Plus 2019 and Office Home and Business 2019. Now, you'll only be able to buy a subscription to either Office 365 Personal or Office 365 Home.

According to the website for the Home Use Program, Office 365 subscriptions can be purchased at a 30% discount. That means that a year of Office 365 Home can be purchased for $69.99, which is the normal price of Office 365 Personal. You can get a year of Personal for $48.99.
Obviously, it's not as much of a discount as it used to be, especially when you consider that Office 365 is a yearly subscription. With the old plan, HUP customers could purchase either of the Office 2019 options for just $14.99.

Yes, we did see it coming. I'll be using Office 2016 (with perpetual license) indefinitely. The last straw will be if/when they try this with the OS.
