Was just offered up KB34100347. Problem is I am have an AMD processor and this update is for Intel microcode. Looking at the CBS.log, looks like it did install OK. Also appears this is a revised released of the earlier ver. since it checked to see if it was installed. Win 10 must maintain microcode files for both Intel and AMD it appears.

Manual check and I'm downloading this patch too. Windows had already automatically checked earlier and this update wasn't found.

Hi Stupendous Man, again, thanks for your response.

Not to go too far of topic here, but I've been trying to fix family members computer in that it has been quite slow with what seems to be too many things taking resources. As I looked, 3 or 4 AVs installed over the top of each other (a no no) without the previous ones been properly uninstalled. As such I've been trying to clean up the dregs, which has proven extremely difficult but I've got the computer down to about 45seconds to boot and about 12 seconds to shutdown. The best I've done so far is stop the associated services, and block them from running at startup. I don't normally watch over their computer so giving them some basics has been on a baby steps process. So it's that as well as see whats going on with the WU. They definitely do NOT want W10.

With me, I'm still on XP and lock it down in other ways. Haven't updated it for years. Trying to move to Linux but no time to get up to speed enough to change over. I have a W7 computer given to me, but don't trust it enough to put online and this has been a learning experience for me as I go. I don't know the crazy update mechanisms M$ is pulling, especially since W7 is nearing EOL 2020 (?). Ive set their computer to download updates but not to install. I'm not sure about what this rollup thing means. Can someone explain how all this works?

With that bit of background, back to Office10. I'll have to go from memory as I won't be near that computer for the next while. Now there's a click to run drive designated as the X(?) drive in "my computer". It seems to have something to do with Office10. There's 2 "starter" programs, Word and one other, Excel I think, in the Programs list. They don't open. It shows an error. Now about 2 years ago they took the computer to be fixed because of something making it slow. Don't know why, but the tech installed Open Office, so it doesn't look like the Office10 thing is functional and I'm not sure if he didn't remove it properly or what.

Just another bit of a curveball here is that the (Toshiba) laptop actually came with 3 windows 8.0 disks. Recovery and install(?) However, at the time they bought it the shop agreed to install W7 on it for them. I see it has about a 1.5GB recovery partition. Would that be W8 or W7?

I can imagine it was helpful that you cleaned that up!

Each new rollup supersedes the previous one.
Each new rollup offers the new fixes, plus those from all previous rollups.
That means that if one starts installing updates, let's say this month, there is no need to install previous rollups, as the contents of previous rollups are offered with the latest rollup.

I don't know much about Microsoft Office and I don't use it myself. I can't look up what those items that you mentioned are.
However, what you say may be plausible, perhaps the tech guy did an improper Microsoft Office uninstall.
I hope someone else who knows more about Microsoft Office can help you with this.

I can't tell what's on that recovery partition.
But anyway, I wouldn't use it. If I would want to reinstall Windows 7, I would download a clean Windows 7 ISO (for instance by using the HeiDoc Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool), and download the necessary drivers from the manufacturer's site, and do a clean install.

Recovery disks are created by OEM manufacturers so you can reset the PC back to the OS configuration set at the factory. The OEM's also create a "recovery" partition on the device that performs the same function as the recovery disks. People are notorious for losing their recovery disks.

I would have the owner of the PC contact repair shop and ask them this question. It is very likely they backed up the drive. Then reformatted the drive with three partitions. They then reinstalled Win 8 and the recovery partition. Then installed an OEM copy of Win 7.

I would take a close look at the PC to confirm the above suspicions. The shop then did one of the following:

    1. Set the partition containing Win 7 as the active OS partition.
    2. Created a dual boot environment. Then set the Win 7 environment variable display timer to "0." This would force an immediate boot to Win 7 without the dual boot OS selection screen appearing.
If my above assumptions are correct; and they ever booted into Win 8; and then ran the Toshiba recovery procedure; it would in effect wipe out their Win 7 installation. All these OEM recoveries will reformat the entire drive prior to reinstallation of the OEM configuration.

    @Stupendous Man, thanks.

Another question regarding updates is, is there any way to find out exactly what is in those roll-ups, and is there something there-in which would force you to upgrade to W10 which I want to avoid like the plague?

Also, is it a free upgrade from W8.0 to 8.1 This could be a doable solution for them when W7 is no longer supported which is little more than a year to go.

@itman thanks for your explanation, which at least confirms my caution - though I wouldn't have guessed they would have taken the steps you describe. Said family has no idea what a dual boot is. After the weekend I'll see myself what the shop says.

(KB4100347) successfully installed on 2 machines. Win 10 is the best OS in my experience, although I wish MS would only offer one major upgrade in a year and let people decide whether they want to delay or stop altogether monthly updates.

My SSD multi-boots WinXP, Vista, Win7, Win8, Win10 and various Linux. Win10 is my favourite and I've never had an update issue.

The KB-article of each Rollup documents the new "improvements and fixes" and it refers to the previous Preview version for the improvements and fixes included in that one, which are included in the Rollup. The Preview refers to the previous Rollup, which refers to the previous Preview before that one, and so on, and so on. But the Rollup KB-articles never document all the fixes that were in all previous Rollups. You would need to see all previous Rollup and Preview KB-articles to see all fixes.

Up to and including the September 2018 Rollup, the Windows 7 Rollups never included anything which would force you to upgrade to Windows 10.

Yes, the upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 is free. (Think of it as a Service Pack.)

@Stupendous Man thanks for your comments. Yes I thought the point releases would be free, but just wanted to make sure. If I remember correctly there was said to be a big difference between 8.0 and 8.1

Why is 4100347 installing with every update? I am using InSpectre is it causing the issue? My system is already patched.

Because your machine has an Intel microcode. The update is seamless, let it install and you're done.

I am not being offered KB4458469 on my Win 10 Pro 64bit (even if I ask).

I have KB4456655 (Servicing Stack Update)present on the machine.

Anyone else not being offered it?

I have a PC where it is not being offered. It was the last one I tried to update. Wondering if they pulled it...

--I just checked another PC, it did show up. Wondering why it didn't on the one.

I installed it yesterday via manual Win Update check.

The strange part was it took a very long time to install prior to the restart prompt. Download of it was fast once it initialized.

If you read the KB article, it states that only new features will be downloaded and any previously installed ones won't be.
