Ok simple question for you. In DS, Differential Backups are relatively/infinitely faster to complete, I get that. And Differential Restores, well they will/should be as current as the last one taken & stored. I believe I have that line of thinking right.

But what I would like to ask is as opposed to a only a single Full BackUp, wherein if any is there a difference in taking single differential partition backups different from incremental's and which has the most tendency to swell or increase the size of the BackUp after several of them are added?

Thanks. This is very enlightening and useful discussion on DS and the better understanding of some of it's puzzle pieces into layman's terms for us. :)

Yes it addressed the differences and comes back again to user preference perhaps.

This below was of immense help since I particularly and regularly on the HDD's use pinpoint file placement defrags. You may remember Isso who first introduced UltimateDefrag (now version 5), then soon thereafter was quite active with AX64 which showed some promise for awhile.

I have all my OS on SSDs so defragging isn't an issue. It's been so long since I've had an OS on a HD I have forgotten how significant a defrag between differentials is to image size.

On the other hand I was never a believer in regular defragging making much or any difference to OS performance.

It makes a marked increase in performance anytime defrags are done with these systems over here. In fact, the more activity-Open/Run Programs-Net Browsing- you name it, I become sensitized to any delays and run a PrivaZer MFT run followed by Defrag and everything speeds back up to normal again. Seems it's always been that way on my machines so is become a routine.

That aside-I for one will soon practice some of those batch files soon. It's almost like going back to basics again to pick up tips on DS and experiment with which one's suit best to even run on a schedule maybe.

    EASTER,

I like batch files. All my backups are from scheduled batch files.

My restores are automated from batch files. There is nothing wrong with doing backup/restore manually but if you can do it automatically, why not make that computer earn its keep.

What does the 0 mean for the -L(imit) option?
I don't see the zero explained in the online docs.

L0 gives you a single .sna file. No splitting. It's the same as putting 0 in the "Maximum image single file size" field of the DS GUI. See Reply #1128

Crap. Shows just how much a dunce you can be in some specialties and sharp as whistle in others. Malware-Security Programs-Testing is top notch routine subject matter for me, but all this time that I used DS I never once thought to place 0 in the capacity size column but instead inserted some inflated number I knew that exceeded the size of the image to perform a Single Image SNA. Color me dumb on that. :gack:

Markymoo found the undocumented -L0 about 10 years ago. He also found -A (Maintenance Mode). I wish he'd come back to the forum.

Agree. He was a great contributor and even at one point fashioned what i think was a DS helper application to make the process a little easier for everyone at the time. I remember some of us testing the beta's as he bug fixed and added other helpful features etc.

That's the one! It was quite a nice piece of work and complimented DS fairly well for a time. Or at least it was and then all of the sudden it was no more.

Is it possible to have it always restore a drive on the boot of the OS? If so, how?
