It's a good anti-PUP with realtime protection even in the free version. Pro version adds the capability of removing already installed SW

Since many months have passed and herdProtect has not been updated since the end of 2014, I can only presume that there will never be a new version released. I guess they're just concentrating on developing Reason Core Security these days.

Yes it's not updated any more but it still scans your system and uploads unknown files for cloud analysis. IDK how effective it is though.

 

I don't know where I got it, but I downloaded & installed HerdProtect ~3 weeks ago... probably it was from the site that Roger linked. Since it was last updated in late 2014, I assume that the Herd's out-of-date status applies not only to the engine but to the signatures of the ~64 AVs it uses, as well.

Conclusion: the Herd has gone to that last round-up just beyond that Golden River in the sky. R.I.P.

Yeah, I understood (maybe wrongly) that herdProtect had somehow been incorporated into Reason Core Security (last update of that seems to have been 17 May 2018, v3.2.0.4, downloaded here but not installed ...).

 

For what I know, herprotect checks several (6 different AVs, something like VT, so it doesn't need to store definitions on cloud, it just sends the hash of the file to those 68 AVs for analysis, then returns the result

I thought that VT didn't allow VT service to be used that way any more. If I remember they changed their policy and their service can be used that way only by developers who contribute to their service. I might be wrong though...

 

Hmmm... if that is the case, then HerdProtect's scans still have value. I know the portable HP app I downloaded runs just fine so maybe I shouldn't dump it...?

It is no longer using a VirusTotal like approach, of scanning files in the cloud with 68 different scanners, but is now just using their own product, Reason Core Security to scan files. I just installed herdProtect and ran a scan and threats were only detected by Reason.

 

Requested for the sake of silliness: Please give me a reasonable reason why Reason dumped the 68 scanners. I mean, IS there a real reason behind Reason's reasoning?

But seriously: Does Reason use its own engine or what? Worth trying out?

From my understanding VT will only allow use by a company who adds their own scanning engine into the VT list.

FYI; I know for a fact Symantec never gave Herd Protect their right to use Norton / Symantec scanning engine.

 

You're right , it answers my silliness request -- but NOT my serious questions about Reason Core Security.

 

I can only presume it is because they have abandoned the product. It still states that is using the 68 scanners. But of course, my testing reveals otherwise.

Reason does have its own engine. It should detect everything that herdProtect does and more. I have used it from time to time, but personally I don't feel I have the need for it. I just installed it on my test system and it crashed before completing a scan. I tried a second time, with the same result. It probably works fine for most users, but it does indicate it can be buggy.

@Krusty It was never using VirusTotal for its scan results, although it was working in a similar way, using many different scanners.

 

What a bummer, I was hoping it worked the same as VirusTotal Uploader.
