Microsoft has been in charge of your desktop since Windows 95.
Linux Mint is actually not bad these days.

 

I like that. Finally everyone is going to linux and will make it better for me. XD XD

 

I sadly predicted this some time ago.
Subscription based ala MS Office, Autodesk (AutoCAD) et al.
Once you've adopted Windows 10, the "P" is gone from your PC.
It is controlled (not by you), but MS.

 

Nice find.
If user wants to block those connections on network level, quite a few IP ranges must be added to block rules.
They also still use HTTP for some connections ( windowsupdate domain? ). That doesn't seem secure.

Was with my brother in law yesterday. He was upgrading to Win 10 after resisting it since its release. Other than it taking 4 hours, the upgrade went smooth. He had everything backed up, and had links to download all his software. When it was finally complete, after almost 4 full hours, there was no need to reinstall anything. He had the latest Win 10, and all his programs were still there and I was surprised that every one of them works. Win 10 runs slower than his old Win 7 Pro by quite a bit at startup, but that could improve after a few boots. Everything else, color me shocked. It's working well.........so far. I'm still sticking with 8.1 Pro.

I'm thinking about it. I want to wait a bit and see how it works for my brother in law, especially if boot speeds get faster with more reboots. His laptop is identical to mine, HP 355G2 with 8G RAM, same AMD processor, etc and similar software on it.

We're going over this evening and look at how to turn off as much MS snooping as we can. All in all, though, other than the long, long upgrade process it ran stable and fast once it booted for the last time.

 

I recommend upgrading now, while it's still free. If you don't like 10, you can rollback to Windows 8.1. When you upgrade, you a get digital license which doesn't expire. This means you can install Windows 10 again, anytime you like, without requiring a product key and it will automatically be activated. Even if you don't like Windows 10 at the moment, you will have a free license that can be used in the future, if you want.

 

I used to have Win 8 and 8.1 and I thought they were both impressive and fast OSs. Upgrading to Win 10 did not improve boot speed, but once the computer is going, it is definitely faster than Win 8 or 8,1. As Roger mentioned, grab it while it is free, and if you don't like it let Macrium do its job...
If you are doing a direct upgrade, to maximize the chances of success, I would uninstall Comodo and any AV if you are using one...

 

Upgrading while Win 10 is free does make sense. And I've got a couple of full, current images of 8.1 on an external, along with all the document files I need each day. If the upgrade screws up, just pop in the Macrium recovery CD and nothing is lost but a few hours. I guess it's time to move into 2018.

Brother in law is happy with it, so far. It does run faster. The only problem is Edge has a habit of not letting him copy/paste and it crashes. I use Opera so that isn't an issue.

 

Does he have the latest version of Windows 10? The initial versions of Windows 10 had issue with Edge crashing sometimes, but that was fixed.

 

We went to MS 'download Win 10' page. It said April 2018 update, so I'm guessing it's the current version. He downloaded the media creation tool and went from there.

 

Yep, the Media Creation Tool will give you the latest current release the day it's released....

If I upgrade, and if MS goes to a monthly fee, I'm back to 8.1. No way will I pay a fee for the privilege of using my laptop.

Four hours isn't a problem to me. I can go do something productive, like reload the couple of thousand rounds of ammo that I've been promising myself to do for months.

 

The upgrade doesn't usually take that long, but if you do it let us know.
