CoinVault Ransomware Authors Have Their Day in Court in the Netherlands

The authors of the CoinVault ransomware have had their day in court today in the Netherlands, where their case was presented in front of a three-judge panel.

During today's hearing in Rotterdam, the judges heard from prosecutors, the defendants, and some of their victims. The sentencing hearing has been scheduled for July 26, two weeks from today.

According to reports in the local press [1, 2, 3], the prosecution asked for a one-year prison sentence (only three months in actual prison and nine months suspended) and community service of 240 hours, while the defendants' lawyers asked for a full suspended sentence and only community work.

Extradite them to the U.S. where they will get at least 2 years in prison.

A New Jersey woman who allegedly couldn't keep her hands to herself was formerly charged in Los Angeles County on July 13 with hacking the email accounts of actress and singer Selena Gomez and her associate.

In a press release, the L.A. County DA's office accuses Susan Atrach of Ridgefield Park, N.J. of accessing the accounts multiple times from June 2015 through February 2016, during which time she allegedly shared and publicly posted various media files stored by the two victims.

Atrach, who turns 22 on July 17, was booked on five felony counts of identity theft; five felony counts of accessing and using computer data to commit fraud or to control or obtain money, property or data; and one felony court of accessing and using computer data or taking supporting documentation without permission. The charges could add up to a maximum sentence of nine years and eight months in state prison, if the defendant is convicted.

A Lexington, Kentucky man was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison on Monday, the Department of Justice wrote in a press release, for a data heist in which he abused his status as an employee of online polling company IntelliSurvey Inc. to snatch up nearly half a million dollars in unclaimed Amazon gift cards.

Per the DOJ, 38-year-old Thomas Scott Taylor was sentenced on a felony conviction of exceeding authorized access of a protected computer following an earlier guilty plea.

According to the Lexington Herald Leader, Taylor has already paid back approximately $202,000 of the funds under a plea agreement arrangement and apologized to both his ex-employer and parents in court.

Burglar wakes up couple to ask to use their Wi-Fi network

A 60-something couple in Palo Alto got an unpleasant surprise on Sunday when they woke up in the middle of the night to find a masked intruder in their bedroom. He said he wanted to use the couple's Wi-Fi network.

The burglar didn't get the Wi-Fi password he was looking for, however. The man leaped out of bed and confronted the intruder, shoving him down the hallway and out the front door. He then immediately called the police. The troublemaker was arrested by police minutes later. No one was injured in the confrontation.

A Massachusetts man was convicted by a federal jury for attacking the computer network of a world-renowned hospital.

Prosecutors said 32-year-old Martin Gottesfeld was convicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston on two counts related to attempting to damage and damaging protected computers.
The attack on the Children's Hospital flooded 65,000 IP addresses with junk data, and disrupted the facility's network for at least two weeks. Prosecutors said it cost the hospital about $600,000.

The conspiracy charge carries a sentence of no greater than five years in prison, three years of supervised release, a fine of $250,000 and restitution. The charge of damaging protected computers calls for a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000.

A Melbourne private schoolboy who repeatedly broke into Apple’s secure computer systems is facing criminal charges after the technology giant called in the FBI.

The teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, broke into Apple’s mainframe from his suburban home on multiple occasions over a year because he was such a fan of the company, according to his lawyer.

The Children’s Court heard on Thursday that he had downloaded 90gb of secure files and accessed customer accounts.

The teen’s defence lawyer said his client had become so well known in the international hacking community that even mentioning the case in detail could expose him to risk.

A San Francisco judge has set bail in cryptocurrency for an alleged hacker.

This likely isn't the first time a US judge has allowed cryptocurrency for bail, Assistant District Attorney Abraham Simmons told the Palo Alto Daily Post.

The man, Martin Marsich, is accused of hacking into EA's internal computer network, according to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Justin Griggs. He allegedly gained access to copies of the game FIFA 2018, as well as to in-game currency packs, and then offered them for sale on black market sites. EA suffered a loss of approximately $324,000 due to the activity, according to the US Attorney's Office.

If convicted, Marsich could face a maximum sentence of five years jail time, a fine of $250,000 and financial responsibility for the hacking damage.

A Connecticut man is asking for leniency while facing sentencing for hacking into more than 250 iCloud accounts of Hollywood stars and other people.

George Garofano, of North Branford, was one of four men arrested in the 2014 hacking scandal that led to private photos of Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Upton and others being made public. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 29 in federal court in Bridgeport.

Garofano says he faces a lifetime loss of rights because of the felony conviction and has "already suffered" punishment since his arrest.

Divyesh Darji, the Indian head of BitConnect and believed to be a core promoter of the scheme, has reportedly been arrested by the Gujarat Criminal Investigation Department (CID) after arriving in Dubai on his way from Ahmedabad.

According to local publication the Financial Express, law enforcement believes that the promoters of BitConnect gained Rs 1.14 crore, roughly $14.5 million, from "thousands of investors" before the exchange closed its doors.
